What is your favorite retro video game soundtrack? I think Final Fantasy VI has the best soundtrack in all of gaming.

Alternatively Shadow of the Beast.

I'd hafta agree with you, the FF6 soundtrack brings me to tears every time I hear Celes' or Terra's theme
but FFV has Home Sweet Home

No, Castlevania IV has tunes that I can still hum, even though I haven't played the game in over 5 years.
a true classic
SOM opening, bring back those sweet memories

I was just about to mention Castlevania IV.

1. Valkyrie Profile
2. Doom
3. Megaman 2
4. Super Mario Bros. 3
5. System Shock
6. Doom 2
7. Contra
8. Pokemon Blue/Red
9. Stargoose
10. Legend of Zelda
I didn't play a lot of games like Castlevania until long after they were released, so they don't hold any nostalgia for me.

I find myself listening to Earthbound / Mother more than any other. I don't know that it's my favorite franchise musically, but it's the one that sticks in my skull the most.

OP here
Since my thread is still up I guess I'll share another retro OST I love. Heretic is probably my second favorite OST actually.

Chrono Trigger

It's 'Forever Rachel', for me.

I can't speak for video games as a whole, but as for arcade games:
Metal Slug 2>Undercover Cops>SFII>Thunder Force IV>rest
final fantasy soundtracks are vastly overrepresented because just so damn many people played those games during their formative years, and JRPG soundtracks benefit from this music/feeling coupling so much because they have such easily relatable storylines. it's unfair.
that said, i'd still probably have to name them. can't escape this, damn.
the ff7 main theme really got to me with its subdued blend of melancholia and somewhat restrained hope

My top favorites are well known ones that get mentioned all the time (Thunder Force III/IV, Castlevania IV, etc) so I'm posting some lesser known, maybe underrated or not often mentioned stuff.
Snake's Revenge - Jungle Infiltration
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYKjNOcjDXY
Honestly one of the better themes I've heard in Metal Gear games in general, a shame it wasn't reused, since the game wasn't "canon".
Mischief Makers - Broken
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGNxpLsHBoM
It's so bouncy and silly, how not to love it?
Magical Adventure 3 - The Crystal Snow Mountain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OZXMRtEzBo
This whole OST is great, but I think this track takes the cake
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure - Montana Max
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRMgg6G1JMw
Whenever people tell me Undertale has such a quirky and bombastic OST, I tell them to go and listen to this

Isn't that just the overworld music?

the main theme is used as the overworld music
