>Asks Mom for SFII on Nintendo for birthday
>Gets the Game Boy version instead
I didn't even know a GB version existed
Do you have any stories like this /vr/?
>ask uncle for Turok Dinosaur Hunter
>he sees it's rated M, doesn't buy it
>gets me Blast Corps instead
>>3351708
In retrospect, you know that you got a better game, right?
>>3351714
In retrospect, as in if I were to retread and play them both again now, yeah, Blast Corps would hold up way better. Console FPS from that era have aged like shit.
Had I gotten it back then though, who knows.
>>3351685
I asked for KoF 95 on playstation, then received KoF 95 on Gameboy It was a good fucking trade. To this day I prefer the the GB version.
>mfw Ralph's 95% DM
>>3351740
And if you had a Super GB it had a special frame and color palette.
Honestly these GB ports of SNK fighting games were awesome.
>>3351740
You unironically got the better version.
>>3351740
If only I was smart enough to spend my money on that instead of MKII. I thought fighters on Gameboy were a lost cause for many years because of how bad that was.
>be me
>ask for Sonic the Hedgehog for birthday
>mom gets me Sonic for SNES
>tell her that this isn't for the right system and it's just a shitty Speedy Gonzalez hack
>get sent to room and grounded for month
>>3351753
There's some curse with MK and portables
Mortal Kombat Advance is the single worst-reviewed game I remember seeing when I was growing up, pretty sure it got straight 0.5/1.0 out of 10 in EGM
>>3351740
>Takara splash screen
Isn't that the company that made the original Transformer toys? Like, the toy line in Japan that all the American stuff got based off of?
Had some decent music.

>>3351793
Yes, Takara were the publishers of the SNK ports on home systems, like Fatal Fury on Genesis and SNES or Samurai Shodown.
>>3351787
I thought game gear MK was pretty fun desu
>>3351783
fucking damnit i hate that game
>>3351753
Then again, MKII on Game Boy was pretty much playable, to the point you can even do some basic combos, like Scorpion's j.HP, Teleport, Spear, Uppercut.
Sure it was quite slower than the console versions, but it ran as smoothly as a Game Boy fighter could run with such big sprites. At least it controls better than the GB SF2
>>3352056
truth, it's pretty good considering
>be with parents in some electronics store
>theyre getting some shit they need
>see pic related
>'that dwarf looks funny'
>ask for it
>get dmg gameboy + tetris instead
>a life devoted to nintendo starts
on the downside, i never learned to relate to human beings...
I wanted Mario Kart 64 for christmas, and I was fully expecting it, since I usually used to only get one to two games per year on gifting holidays, and I always got what I asked for.
I get Diddy Kong Racing instead. I was disappointed at first. But I eventually realized that DKR was a way better deal, and even to this day I continue to be unimpressed with each new Mario Kart.
i remember i fucking hunted that gb version and when i finally got it i was so disappointed...
>tfw you never got the feeling of the arcade in a console.
>>3352497
Never owned a dc?
>>3352504
who would freakin own that junk. ps2 killed it and the psx was better cause of library.
>>3352521
The dc had the best arcade fighting game ports?
But whatever you say anon...
I was looking for Doom wads a year or so ago and discovered that the gameboy had a port of Doom AND Doom II.
I knew I had to have it the moment I saw it.
>>3351783
>SONIC SONIC
>MARIO
>dad reads that Perfect Dark is popular
>buys the GBC version
Still fun of course, it plays kind of like Metal Gear 2.
>>3351685
>Asks dad to get Pong for xmas
>Gets Pong
>Happens to be the Sears one but they're all the same so it doesn't matter
>>3351685
there was no SFII for the NES you shit, were you expecting a bootleg or what?
>>3351685
>Asks mom for Double Dragon II
>Gets Double Dragon I
>Asks for Double Dragon II later on.
>Get's Double dragon III.
>Never gets Double Dragon II
>Later on
>save up 95 bucks to buy MK II at 11 years old.
>forced to return it
>Friend buys probably an open copy for 20 bucks later that week.
>Probably mine.
>>3352531
>The dc had the best arcade fighting game ports?
Aside from the Darkstalkers port, which was terrible.
>>3353069
That really sucks because DD2 was easily the best one for the NES.
>told parents to get brother tengen tetris while it was still available for NES
>they got nintendo fucking fail as crap tetris
why
>>3351740
I loved that game.
>>3352476
>i never learned to relate to human beings
And nothing of value was lost.
>>3352653
What's neat is that as far as I'm aware the GBA version of Doom 2 was the first ever non-PC port of that game.
Like, there's the PlayStation Doom that's 1 & 2 merged together, but up until digital releases were a thing I believe Doom 2 Advance was the only real port.
>>3353198
Doom 2 advance was also surprisingly a decent port. Most of the level design was unchanged, though a few levels did get split into two levels.
greentexted this before but it's relevant
>10 years old
>read all about superman 64 in Nintendo power
>love the cartoon even more than the goddamn batman
>envision an open world superman flying adventure
>the hype is fucking real
>tell dad all I want for Christmas is superman on 64
>Christmas morning comes
>bout to bust one in anticipation
>I'm gonna be flying over motherfucking skyscrapers and punching darkseid up his butthole
>rip and tear through presents
>where's the superman, dad
>See the last lonely box under the tree
>that's not shaped like a Nintendo 64 box
>open it
>It's the titus game boy superman
>dad tells me "oh yeah the Nintendo 64 one isn't out yet"
>the sadness of a child
>play the game boy one
>It's by no means good but it's playable
>lose interest in superman games after the game boy one was so average
>the 64 one finally comes out and I never play it
>still haven't
>thanks dad
>>3353072
Thankfully both Dark stalkers porta on the Saturn are top-tier
>>3352653
i've heard that version is actually really solid too.
>>3351685
>ask father for any game
>tells me to fuck off
And thats how i played the same 4 games for a very long time.
>>3353394
It absolutely is. GBA doom looks pretty rough in stills but in motion it works just fine. It was the first version of doom that I actually played through, and it's fast and frantic like doom should be. The lack of cyberdemons is kinda lame but for a portable doom it's pretty much everything you could want.
>>3353412
Doom gba is so comfy, too. I probably replay through it about once a month
>>3353405
Damn anon
I'm sorry
Here have a cyberhug
>>3352653
>gba micro
>doom + doom 2
Awesome pocket Doom desu. Perfect except for the green blood.
>>3353335
>thanks dad
So you're upset that your father wasn't a time traveler?
>>3351685
>be me
>'97, turn 11
>go to k-b-toys
>saw older cousin play battle arena tushinden on ps1
>saw that it was on gameboy for 29.99
>retail lady tries to convince my child self to buy the 19.99 world heroes 2 jet because "it has 16 fights!" (BAT had like 8 i think)
>her and mom convinced me to get this unknown game
>tfw you got a gem u never knew u got until you were old enough to feel that feel
takara knew their GB shit.
>>3353718
No I mean legitimately thank you dad for not buying me that game, I'm glad it was not part of my childhood.
I recall my brother and I asking for Mario Kart for Christmas and getting Mario Kart 64 instead.
We were always behind on video-game generations.
>ask mom for a 32X with Virtua Fighter
she buys me a fucking Tiger R-Zone
Closest story I have is I was obsessed with Mortal Kombat 2 on SNES. I played that all the time and learned all the character bios and endings. I got a Game Gear a few years later and saved up $30 and was gonna buy a wicked cool dinosaur but saw MK2 for Game Gear on display. I thought it was awesome to be able to play MK2 anywhere so I got that instead. Still regret it to this day. I played maybe two hours today. I couldn't believe like half the cast was cut since it was my first ever experience with a port, let a handheld one. I finally did get my dinosaur like a year later and ended up practically giving all my GG games away, MK2 included, for a few pennies on ebay a couple years back.
Best Game Boy fighting game!

Buying games was expensive, this is why my brother and I rented from Blockbuster a lot and had a modded PSX.

> ask mum and dad for a snes for christmas

Thanks alot mum, you had one fucking job
