Our soul is beyond saving now; you might as well go all the way

Don't mind me, just posting gore.

anta baka?
It's incredible how lazy square has gotten. The remake of the first 2 final fantasy annd FF4 was actually well done and the redrawn sprites lookd great.
I can't understand why they butchered classics like FF5 and FF6 by using some lame ass upscale filter.
>>3343636
It's almost as if the game isn't meant to be played at that resolution or something.
>>3343650
Smartphones happened, no need for quality checks when you can just put it on the Android market!
>>3343646
they are referring to the shit ass port, not the actual text on screen in that screen shot
>>3343650
>The remake of the first 2 final fantasy
I hope you mean the Origins remake and not those abominations on the PSP.
>>3343636
Holy shit, with that building, the landscape looks exactly like something from scorched 3d!
Terra's profile art actually looks nice, too. That one competent artist must have been pretty lonely in the Korean sweatshop.
>>3343650
it's marketed to smartphone babbys used to glossy embossed emojis. it is not for us.
nothing is, anymore.
>>3343720
Origins would have been perfect if it wasn't for the insane decrease in difficulty for FF1. They made it way too easy.
>>3344391
Whoops, I was thinking of Dawn of Souls on GBA.
>>3343659
Wrong, it's also available on Steam.
>>3343469
>>3343636
I wish we could at least had something like pic related for 5 and 6.
>>3343646
There is a certain other screen from a certain DKC2 port that would count as gore in this context.
>>3344489
You don't even need an art director, just someone with common sense to look at what the whole package looks like.
Looks more like they outsourced everything to a few Chinese companies and sold it before having a look at the finished product.

i would've loved a FFV after years

I love how strago looks at you with disappointment written all over his face that you are playing this shit.

It's too late. Now we know that the new game has superior graphics.

Doesn't mean it's meant to be played at that resolution. 2D games are designed to work on specific resolutions. 3D games tend to have textures that get distorted on models, meaning they often look far better on higher resolutions.
The game looks decent on its intended platforms, but god-awful when you skyrocket the resolution to far beyond what it was designed.
>>3346773
Modern multiplatform games, even 2D, aren't made for a target resolution anymore. Correction: they shouldn't.
It's true the tile bleeding and artifacts are mostly noticeable outside the "native" resolution and its multiples, but this was a port developed under a very obvious cash-in rationale (not saying that's bad in itself) that meant from the get-go an obvious factor of platform ubiquitousness. You can either waive the maximum possible profits motivation, or a proper cutting line for quality standards: you don't get to keep both.
That said, the game simply looks like crap anyway bro
>>3346821
The problem is that a 2D game like Final Fantasy 6 doesn't use many 3D models and textures, it uses tilesets. You could have to make tilesets, sprites, and backgrounds for every resolution if you wanted to retain the same field of view, or run it through filters which causes all kinds of fun and games for the developers.
Look at the largest image in World of Ruin, the town model looks really good because it's a 3D model with textures, which clashes with the tilesets. If you look at old games that use pre-rendered backgrounds and 3D models, you get the exact same problem; high-quality models and horrible static graphics.
I do agree that the sprites needed some serious quality control put into them.

jesus thank god I can still emulate the SNES version

Question for tech-savvy anons: couldn't the color adjustments made for games (specially ports) to counter the original, non-backlit GBA's contrast issues have been handled through software-level stuff like gamma controls or per-detected-hardware palette swaps?
Instead of fucking the graphics to death I mean
>>3347032
Yeah, but a backlit screen wasn't even in consideration back then.
>>3346956
Same could be said about the image in the OP.
>>3347035
DKC2 Advance came out well after the GBA SP came out. It's a shame that the port still had to be hampered because they were afraid of alienating people who owned the original GBA.
Someone post nightmare in dreamland comparisons.
>>3347043
Not really, no.
>>3346898
It has cohesive art direction that works with the medium.
The HD graphics make no artistic sense. They are just in the shape of something that people identify with, they don't actually leverage the medium or pay due respect to the original in any way. It's obviously just a cash in slapped together by a cut and paste team of shovelware monkeys.
Creative liberty is not a bad thing except for corporate machines that need predictability with their cash flow. I refuse to buy remakes. Their popularity are contributing to the stagnation of ideas in gaming. Even if we love a game (or movie, or tv show, or book, or etc. etc.), we as an audience should be aware that it's in our best interest to let stand alone games be what they are, and nothing more.
I'm cool with there being a Final Fantasy franchise. Besides some signature characters and elements, most games have presented an eclectic mix of game mechanics and unrelated stories. But the last good FF mechanically was X, and it started the trend of the entire catalog getting sequels and remakes ad nauseum. My interest has waned completely. These companies are husks of what they used to be.
I say pirate old games instead of playing remakes because it would encourage diversity in newer games.

The OVA Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals was set hundreds of years after FFV. Not sure if that counts.
