How do I Evil-ish party?
My idea was:
Protagonist (Fighter / Mage)
Kagain (Fighter)
Viconia (Cleric)
Shar-Teel (Fighter switched to Thief)
Edwin (specialist Mage)
Branwen (Cleric)
Other Infinity Engine games are welcome as well.

That's pretty much it, you have a solid fighter, a great cleric, and a great mage.

I think i used Tiax for Branwen and Jan Jansen in 2, just for the fun.
It took me about 5 playthroughs to even try Kagain. Fuck, I'm stupid. Easily the best tank in the entire series.

I'm a bigger fan of the four-man party, personally.
Now, we know that there's no Mage, good or evil as fantastic as Edwin. So that's a given. No one tanks like Kagain "regenerating HP by the second" tanks, so that's another obvious spot.
I'm not a big fan of using Branwen though. She's not evil, her God's not evil (Tempus is Chaotic Neutral) and Baldur's Gate 1 actually gives you variety with evil characters, so... I elect to go with Viconia. This is especially good if you play through to Baldur's Gate 2 where your party selection is even narrower and she's almost guaranteed to be a member. She's my favorite for giving the Gauntlets of Ogre Power to. With a suitable strength, her 19 Dex, Full Plate, Large Shield and 50% Magic Resistance makes her nearly as effective an offtank as Kagain is a main tank.
And the last party member is Montaron. Xzar is dead weight and immediately outclassed by Edwin. But Montaron is obtainable right out of Candlekeep which means you can tailor his Thief skills to meet every challenge from Durlag's Tower with ease. And more than any other Thief available in the game, he's a competent warrior too.
So, those are my picks for a four-man party. Whichever character your Protagonist fulfills the place of most, replace that one. Probably Edwin, given you're a Fighter / Mage and it's one less Mage to compete with scrolls over. Or possibly Kagain, especially if you mean to use Viconia in a tank role.

but if you are playing the new expanded edition you should try Dorn. he's the only new character that has a good story. he's overpowered but great if you play on high difficulty. it also opens up your protagonist to be a different class if you want. His missions in BG2 are hilariously evil. if you ever wanted to murder groups of people for quest xp that's the path to go.

Blech. I mean, you're not wrong. Dorn is the best of the lot, but it's like endorsing herpes because the sores are satisfying to itch. It's really not worth the trade off.

What's wrong with the colors?
Switch Branwen with Montaron, leave Shar-Teel as a pure fighter and you're set. Clerics are nice to have, but ultimately the faster you kill things with NPCs who can actually fight efficiently the better you will survive. With the amount of Potions of Perception / Master Thievery available traps & locks shouldn't pose a problem with a multi-classed thief if you level their skills intelligently (i.e. no pickpocket). I know this since I rolled with that exact team before, substituting Xzar for Edwin and Dorn for Shar-Teel for flavor.
Despite her low con Shar-Teel is best as a pure fighter since she can outdamage Minsc with Fighter weaponmastery (but not Dorn with his broken orc retard strength), and her natural AC is quite good.
With Kagain it's already been said: the dude is unkillable. With gauntlets of dex even more so.
Monty is a clear candidate for the Gauntlets of Ogre Power for some absolutely savage backstabs later on, and his dex is already very nice. He can murder with a sling this way too, since strength directly affects sling damage.
Vicky and Edwin as your main casters are sufficient to carry you through the game. CHARNAME can pretty much be anything you want with this setup since the team comp is so solid, but a pinch hitter fighter / support caster like you chose compliments it perfectly.
