What class or situation could ever allow for duel-wielding a morning star and a dagger, especially at long range and against a dragon

Everyone in this picture is playing a clear role or contributing in some way or another, even if it's just punching the dragon in the eye but that dwarf has absolutely no idea

Why has vg artwork become so complex and detailed and "over designed" compared to back then? Kind of takes away the innocence and simplicity
>>
Japanese Zelda:LA boxart was nice too
>>
>>3330926
I wouldn't really call it complex; even "overdesigned" suggests a level of consciousness which just isn't there anymore. Modern CA just feels like lacking balance and clear concepts; the cause mostly being digital art has made planning nearly obsolete. It's just about enthusiastically adding crap to a design until it feels 'right' now
>>
>>3330986
>digital art has made planning nearly obsolete
please expand on that
>>
>>3330991
Not him, but when you have all the room in the world to fuck up and then just fix or hide your fuck ups digitally without having to start over, you don't really learn anything and get sloppy.
For pre-digital illustration, painting and air-brushing to look good, there was little room for error which resulted in more skilled, precise and careful artists that learned how their preferred medium worked inside out, and also arguably had a better sense of it due to the more physically intimate nature of directing real paint with a real brush on a physical canvas.
I'm not saying all digital painting is bad, but if you want your stuff to look I suggest doing equal physical work to your digital work in order to grow.

when you look at something like Palu in my post though, the NES version looks decidedly simpler. This remains true even/especially when comparing her to other /vr/ artwork in this thread. Zelda went through that same transformation.

This >>3331008 is pretty much it, though the 'tactile' conection is a very abstract thing that I see used as a go-to argument by straightedge all-traditional artists as much as the all-digital counterparts claim the superior freedom and expressivity of their own preferences to be more meaningful

Still, it can't be denied that the flexibility for iteration and tweaking that digital gives you simply *is* the way to go for commercial art.

A good hand at both usually pays off though, specially at the learning stage, but also by combination: Pic related is probably the high point of Street Fighter character portraits, and it's done with traditional sumi brushwork with color added in Photoshop

no I was being serious I don't like any of their games because none of their games are fun to play
>>
>>3333083
can you be a bit more specific? Like, you probably tried to play a game or two to come to that conclusion. Can you identify aspects that annoyed you? Can you identify aspects you encountered across multiple games, something that would equate a "Rare-thing", that bothers you and puts you off all their games?

there's only a few possible ways they can respond to me. Silence, because they have no followup, bullshit, which is easily seen as such, or a genuine answer, in which case we have an actually interesting exchange. I'll take these odds. Certainly beats endless circle jerks and people patting each other's backs for liking the same shit

More like silence because I literally didn't even think about it again after I posted it until now and didn't even believe it needed clarification at the time, because "I didn't have fun playing any of their games" should really be enough, it's a subjective opinion.

Lets me see though, you want to know why

Well, in terms of narrative their games are kind of fucked up. As a child I was never totally sure who Donkey Kong actually was, or why he needed so many god damn bananas and golden banana shaped objects. Like okay you collect the things, and that's a big part of the gameplay, but fucking why, why does DK have to fight an entire country of crocodiles and enlist a bunch of random animals to help him for this? Why does he need to have so many fucking bananas? Why does K. Rool have to steal them? Both of them seem like complete assholes.

I get a similar feeling when I played B&K, where supposedly Banjo just wants to help his sister, but his sister is also a complete asshole and really doesn't deserve it. Then it tasks you with collecting all this bullshit again, and what really fucking gets to me is that they aren't fun challenges. At least in Mario 64 it's a joy to move Mario around and explore the physics and the movesets, but everything in B&K just apes the concepts and flops the execution. Being Banjo isn't fun or challenging it's just a way to waste time and jump through the hoops the developers gave you because that's the only way they could think of to structure the game. The lack of originality and forced (i.e.contrived i.e. do these people even like the game they were making) creativity winding up with downright repulsive character designs and unlikable characters. That fucking steel plate and pointy teeth shit and dirty brown color palettes contrasting with blasted out over saturated colors the rest of the time just drives me up the wall.

>It was a typical example of Rare's looking at what was popular and then putting our spin on it.

thanks, that's actually quite a nice post and explanation.

>didn't even believe it needed clarification at the time
It probably didn't "need" any, but especially with uncommon opinions I like to explore the motivation, what lead to that opinion. That reflection can give quite a bit of insight in how some game mechanics or design decisions can be perceived differently.
In that regard your DK paragraph was nice, no sarcasm. I strongly believe a game's narrative should provide a motivation to the player. If it doesn't, it fails, simple as that. Sure, people are motivated differently, but it's a very valid reason as to why a game doesn't work for somebody.

Also
>the hoops the developers gave you
That right there, I played so many games where that was a problem. You'd think it's covered in game dev 101, or at least passed down from dev gen to dev gen, but that mistake is made constantly.

To bring this thread back on topic, the Rare artwork does look a bit fad chasing, not genuine. So it kind of fits the rest of the theme of your post, and makes the whole thing consistent. It's high quality in terms of technical execution; the artwork, I mean; but it's sterile? Seems to be a fitting word there.
>>
>>3335241
Like seriously I actually wanted the Dark Queen to win, Gruntilda becoming hot af and Tooty becoming a gross hamplanet was fucking great as far as I was concerned.

And those fucking auto-scrolling sections holy fucking shit, literally, literally play this level over and over until you memorize all the fucking patterns, what's that it's not fun? maybe because it was designed by a bunch of fucking britbong faggots playing at 50 fps

it's all so fucking lazy and uninspired, these people literally actually made games by aping other games that already existed, not because they enjoyed anything about that shit, but because it was their job and when they did try to make something they actually cared about it fucking flopped and never got released

fucking tedious repetitive shit to suck up your time and play off your ocd perfectionism so you waste even more time replaying and memorizing levels just to say you did it or you didn't give up when set against it's retarded spinning barrels, like are there a fucking hundred spinning barrels in that game? more?

even fucking blast corps, arguably their most interesting and uniquely designed game has you doing the same shit over and over and fucking over until it's a chore instead of fun

if I wasn't trying to escape from some mind rendingly painful and soul-crushing childhood I don't know why I would ever, ever play any Rare game to completion

The best version to get of Gradius is the PSX Deluxe pack. It contains arcade accurate ports of the first and second game, right down to the slow down. It uses streamed audio so the audio sounds like the arcade counter part as well. It also works in Popstarter with no problems and accurate slowdown to boot.

The famicom game lacks a lot, has huge differences from arcade, different scoring. It can't even compare. If you want to play it I recommend using the Gradius AC famicom hack as it gives you all 4 option, an arcade palette, graphics closer to the arcade, the arcade font, an options menu, high score saving with battery, and some redesigned levels to try and match arcade. The hack was changed to an MMC3 chip so you can't burn it onto the first game but you can use any MMC3 game with battery as a base if you want to play it on hardware.
>>
>>3346321
Nobody really expects an arcade accurate conversion from a Famicom game. All Konami arcade games that were ported to FC were reworkings.

I know, I'm just offering other ways to enjoy the game.

I feel like this is part of a trend. I don't think it is enabled by digital art. detail in VG art has been spiralling upward for a while. if you look at the art for Final Fantasy, you can clearly see a sense of one-upsmanship going on. or King of Fighter designs.

Japanese entertainment clearly follows style over substance. which is weird, because so much of their culture is about the simplicity and refinement and razor-like efficiency
