I liked it until I got Faxanadu but it's still better than Astyanax

I liked apples until I got oranges but they're still better than pizza.

Yes

Yeah, it was one of my childhood favorites.

I think the sort of dark and glum aesthetic and atmosphere it has going for it is why I also came to like Diablo a shitload (the treasure collecting and violence helped too).

Bit of a hard game, but at least you get unlimited continues (at the expense of your score, however).

i only speak for myself, but its a little dry for me. also, probably everyone knows this, but David Wise did the music. also, ste pickford was involved as well in some way i think or maybe did the sequel

Never enjoyed them very much. I liked the variety of powerups you could find, but I hated how shitty your main weapon was and I hated the endless little enemies that slammed into you from every angle on every level.

I love it. Haven't played any of the later games in the series but the first one has tight controls, tons of treasures to collect, it has some funny animation at times and the music is amazing. Even when you're low on health you don't get annoyed by some annoying beep but it's just a short music sample that gets only slightly annoying at its worst. Story is very simple and some might find the level design a little boring but in the end, it's a fun game that deserves far more attention for fans of NES platforming games.

TL;DR I like it and others should at least try it out once.

Despite its flaws, IronSword is definitely in my top 10.

Some interesting observations about the game:

- Your swordplay sucks. The game expects you to impale enemies with the tip of your weapon by jumping into them. As best as I can figure, standing still and swinging your weapon around is merely intended to deflect enemy projectiles, not actually attack enemies at point-blank range. Although you can get shield upgrades, they have nothing to do with blocking. All types of armor merely decrease (very slightly) how much damage Kuros takes from attacks.

- You can collect the walled off items in stage 3-1, but it requires you to exploit the sword magic glitch. To perform the glitch: After defeating an elemental, don't grab the IronSword fragment from the exit chamber. Instead, align yourself with the exit, jump straight up and fire your sword magic at the IronSword fragment. The sword magic will collect the fragment for you, but in doing so, the game allows you to keep your sword magic and carry it into the next level. Your sword magic can be fired at any other object to pick it up, even if it's on the other side of a wall.

- Lives, keys and continues are all bugged. If you collect more than 3 lives or 15 keys, their values roll over to 0. This sucks if you happen to collect too many of either and then jot down your password, because resuming from that password means stranding yourself with insufficient resources. The game decides to remove all of your continues when you reach stage 4-1, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't supposed to do this until you finished stage 4-2. It was an otherwise intended event.

- The Relics of Sindarin (the glove, book, etc.) don't do anything except increase your score, and the password system doesn't allow you to retain any that you've collected. I guess trying to collect all the relics in a single playthrough is intended as an optional challenge?

It's a completely unrelated game that coincidentally has the same name

>In the NES version, if Kuros has got Wand of Wonder or Staff of Power, he needs to press Select button every time in order to shoot out projectiles. In the Famicom version however, as long as Elrond has either of these items, all of his normal attacks will shoot out projectiles, without needing to use the Select button.
>After Kuros has defeated Malkil in the NES version, he can safely reach the exit and rescue the last princess. In the Famicom version however, as soon as Elrond beats Anis to dust, the room will start to tremble, and rocks will fall from ceiling, dealing 500 damage per hit, until Elrond reaches the exit.

The first one was good, the second was okay, the third was fucking awful and didn't even feel like it was made by the same people.
>>
>excited to play this after what people have been saying
>download the rom
>platforming is tight but you can't hit enemies for shit, even when they're constantly swarming you and draining your health like a fat kid on cake
so far this is just annoying
am i supposed to not use my sword ever and just jump into/on enemies?
>>
>>3325143
Use jump

Get dagger of throwing
>>
>>3325143
Your sword attack is actually not that good, it's situational at best, you really want to get the throwing dagger, throwing axe, or magic wand, for range attacks.

>the third was fucking awful and didn't even feel like it was made by the same people.

I used to think the same thing, but 3 is actually really fun once you understand what you're supposed to be doing
>>
i like the game, i picked it up for 8 bucks a few days ago

>>3324981
i seen the famicom ending with the falling ceiling, it's hardcore bullshit that makes you pray for good RNG.

Jesus, I never knew this game was so bugged. A clear case for game genie abuse if ever there was, if for no other reason than to fix the lives bug!
