I like early RPGs but I especially like the ones where character sprites are just icons that doesn't change their direction depending on movement. I'm not sure why but I really like that simplicity.
What are some other games that do this besides Dragon Warrior and Ultima 1-5?
Rouge
Check out Dark Heart of Uukrul.
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves is pretty great.
The old Gold Box D&D games were first-person grid-based movement for exploration, but switched to this sort of thing in combat (although if I remember rightly the figures could face left or right, just not up or down).
It was cool, got across the feeling of tabletop miniature combat nicely.
Exile series on pc was great for this, you can even import your own sprites for characters
Castle of the Winds.
Bokosuka Wars for Famicom and MSX1. The game was widely panned for its RNG-driven mechanics though. Pretty much any enemy you engage in a duel can kill you regardless of your stats, so completing the game is very much a luck of the draw. It's also an incredibly short game, maybe 5 minutes at most.

>Also I save scummed the fuck out of it.

you gotta embrace defeat and learn from it, by savescmuming you spoiled yourself from instinctively learning wel that and sometimes you probably just couldnt win, but u just start over hoping for a better luck
Realmz. Exile. Anything from Spiderweb Software.
The Magic Candle
Questron I and II. You could say they're Ultima clones, but I liked them a lot.

Idea: what if you hacked existing roms so that every turned facing sprite was replaced with the forward-facing sprite?
