I agree. Especially in Linux.
You have three realistic choices.
PuNES, aims for extreme accuracy similar to BSNES for SNES games. I usually use this ever since I had the other two good emulators glitch out on a legit game. Windows and Linux.
FCEUX, the best NES emulator for romhackers period. Has all the features you could ever want for crawling inside of the game and poking around, plus very high accuracy. Windows and Linux.
Nestopia, good enough emulator that hasn't really been updated or worked on since 2008. The only major plus I can say for it is that you can run it on Macs.
Pretty much any other emulator is horribly outdated and inaccurate garbage except Higan, and PuNES gives you the same quality if not better with a saner interface. The only reason Nestopia gets a mention is because it's probably the most accurate one for appleshit.
Nestopia, although it's now discontinued. There are a couple of third-party forks that aim to fix any remaining issues. I think Nestopia UE is one. It's cross-platform, too.
FCEUX isn't particularly accurate, but it works, and it's good for toaster ovens.
