What retro games do you consider to be underrated or to be ahead of their time, /vr/?
>>
I've never seen anyone shit on MG2, on the contrary, many people say it's one of the best in the series.

I played it recently and it was good, but not the masterpiece I was expecting.

7/10.

Another anon recently posted this as the worst retro game ever, but I think it's a sorely overlooked gem. Dungeon Magic is basically the Elder Scrolls of NES. The graphics detail is similar to other first-person dungeon crawlers for early platforms, but it's mechanically realtime instead of turn-based. NPCs and enemies are constantly moving all around you, even if you just stand still and do nothing.

And it's not a dungeon crawler, despite its presentation. There are plenty of villages and outdoor areas to explore, most of those being very open spaces as opposed to the usual "rat maze" approach you'd see in games like Wizardry or Ultima.

Love this way more than Metroid.

The Lone Ranger. Sure, it got covered by Nintendo Power, even got the cover. But it came out way too late in the NES's lifespan and was mostly ignored by gamers in favor of the SNES games. Which is sad, since it's probably one of the best games on the console.

Gauntlet on the NES. I know, everyone is into Gauntlet Legends and no one cares about the old games, but the NES port is probably the best of all of them. Just for the reason it's the only port of Gauntlet that you can actually beat if you git gud enough. Fuck Legend's easy ass bullshit, this is the real deal here. No buying upgrades between levels, here you pick up your upgrades as you go or suffer for it. Balls to the wall motherfucker.

Pretty much any of the vehicular combat games by SingleTrac after they got booted off of the Twisted Metal series. They didn't have the big Twisted Metal name, so they got largely ignored by most people, but they are just as good as the first two games were. Critical Depth and Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012 are both worth a play, and Critical Depth gets additional points for being an underwater vehicular combat game.

Pretty much invented the RTS genre that we know of today.

Not really ahead of its time. You should have posted Sweet Home instead.

I think it's because most people suck MGS' dick without even touching the MSX games, so they don't even realize that MGS is just MG2 in 3D except not as good.

That's what makes it underrated.

>underrated.

I don't think you understand what that word means.

I think plenty of people have played or heard of Bonk's Adventure, but not many have played the sequel. It's better in every way and a very impressive 16-bit platfomer.

The jump in quality is similar to mega man 2
>>
>>3319172

but Bonk's Revenge is widely considered the high point of the franchise. I agree with you about it being better

>underestimate the extent, value, or importance of (someone or something).

MG1/2 were more innovative than MGS, yet MGS gets far more praise instead. Ergo, MG1/2 are underrated.

Metal Gear 2 gets a bit more recognition nowadays, mostly due to storyfags because how it sets up MGS1, but Metal Gear 1 is mostly dismissed by plebs.

>MGS is bad because its popular

You sound like a cum guzzling hipster, anon.

What makes it underrated is that its overlooked. Everything else about your post is irrelevant and to reiterate, makes you sound like a cum-guzzling hipster. Try to contain your power-level, hipster-kun.

>MGS is good because I played it when I was 8 and Solid Snake is the coolest videogame character ever!!!!

Try to contain your power-level, nostalgia-kun.
>>
>>3319417

I really want to know how much bleach you drink daily to get that from my post. If nostalgia has to do with anything here, it'd be my love for the first Metal Gear games(and I played the shitty NES versions) and nothing to do with MGS.

Looks like someone can't handle getting called out on being a hipsterfag.

Give 3 reasons how MGS improved on the MSX MG's, otherwise you're full of shit.

>Give 3 reasons how MGS improved on the MSX MG's, otherwise you're full of shit

Are you autistic? Not even buzzwording, anon. First, what exactly is happening here? Are you assuming I'm making a claim that I never did?

I pointed out how stupid it is to say MGS is bad because its popular because thats what the first post I replied to implied. "Less innovations" doesn't really mean much in terms of quality. A game can have a million ideas that are fresh and still be unfun to play, not that those two games are unfun.

You're sperging out over nothing right now and its pretty fucking hilarious.

1) The Sniper Rifle in MGS1 is cool and wouldn't had been possible on a 2D game, even if other games from the same era did sniping better. Also, the Stinger missiles is less shitty in MGS1 thanks to the fact you can aim in first person rather than have to move a tiny crosshair on a tiny radar.

2) Snake moves much more naturally in MGS1 than in the MSX2 game, to the point that Metal Gear GB copied the style. The way he hugs walls was kinda cool too. He couldn't even move diagonally in the MSX2 games.

3) The voice acting and cutscenes blend smoothly with the gameplay, whereas in MG2 most of the cutscenes were just two heads talking to each other, even if they weren't on the CODEC.

>He couldn't even move diagonally in the MSX2 games.

Why do you think he couldn't?
There's plenty of MSX games with diagonal controls. Metal Gear games just weren't programmed that way.
>>
>>3320574
Probably it was easier to draw Snake facing four directions than eight.
>>
>>3318240
I definitely think it is one of the best Metal Gear games. Same with Ghost Babel.

It has a few weak parts, but the level design and enemy placement are excellent. MG2 is pretty brilliant.
>>
>>3320606
>what is sprite flipping
>>
>>3320614
Metal Gear 2 doesn't use sprite-flipping though.
>>
>>3320628
And Metal Gear 1 doesn't either, aside from Snake's unarmed sprite when facing left or right. His armed sprite is different on both directions though.
