Tapper is actually a really fun game to play at the arcade, shame it gets so overlooked for the other "classics"
I love these older enclosed sit down cabinets. Monaco GP is a really good game, too.

This one had a little plexi window/lighting setup that both simulated the laser and helped to aim.
Pretty neat and a big step up from trying to use the peep sight on Operation Thunderbolt, haha.
Played this one once. Ashamed to say I couldn't exactly figure how2horse since the thing was in moonspeak.
Not pictured: the two pedals that controlled the tracks. I'd play a modern VR version...
I remember the vibration on this thing's gun to be rather strong.

>Garnet Hertz's video game concept car combines a car-shaped arcade game cabinet with a real world electric vehicle to produce a video game system that actually drives. OutRun offers a unique mixed reality simulation as one physically drives through an 8-bit video game. The windshield of the system features custom software that transforms the real world into an 8-bit video game, enabling the user to have limitless gameplay opportunities while driving. Hertz has designed OutRun to de-simulate the driving component of a video game: where game simulations strive to be increasingly realistic (usually focused on graphics), this system pursues "real" driving through the game. Additionally, playing off the game-like experience one can have driving with an automobile navigation system, OutRun explores the consequences of using only a computer model of the world as a navigation tool for driving.

> [Clay] salvaged an old Williams Defender, coating the sides with a cocktail of drywall compound, sand, and paint to achieve a stone texture. He then carved up some pink insulation foam into a tattered “wooden” frame and used it as a monitor bezel. For accents, he fashioned strips of latex to resemble torn flesh and placed them among the boards. The control panel is yet another work of art: [Clay] 3D printed a life-size human femur for the game’s joystick, and converted the buttons to look like eyeballs.
>[Clay] decided to go beyond the stunning cosmetics, though, and tapped into the game’s CPU with a custom daughterboard that detects different in-game events and state changes such as player health. An ATMega165 uses four PWM outputs connected to a number of LEDs inside the cabinet and around the monitor bezel to react to the different events. If a player takes damage, red lights flash around the monitor. Inserting a coin or dying in the game causes a different set of LEDs behind the marquee to go nuts.
the game itself is the generic 70's shooting gallery.
but the cabinet it's pretty cool, especially the big bazooka.

This is one of the coolest things I have seen in a long time. Looking at the inside, the electro-mechanical parts appear much less complex than a lot of pinball tables. It works like a Stylophone, and it doesn't look like the circuit layout is a hell of a lot more complex than a Stylophone either.
Not retro, but does anyone design new EM games like this?
>>3317353
Of course not there's no commercial viability so they're only ever constructed as one-off demonstration projects with varying degrees of complexity.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTBcxr9KBuQ
>>3317353
Closest thing to a modern EM I've seen are Foosball tables with additional features (covered playground, annoying sound fx, automatic ball serving, LED score board, etc...).
If GCCX is an indication, Japan has still tons of cool as shit (and still working!) EM games.

This is totally not retro, but I makes me wonder how it would've went if the western rhythm game craze happened in the 80's arcades before home consoles were capable of audio playback.

The early light gun games were all these super primitive machines like that in the 70s that used like light up spots and weren't even computerized or with graphics or anything.
Nintendo's initial games in the genre for NES were like proper video game versions of that.

>>3332086
can you recommend a good set up?
I don't know shit about arcades, let alone building one
>>3332182
It's mainly about getting the video output right with a hack driver like crt_emudriver. Then you just need to use proper controls and write them up correctly and to avoid the temptation to run games that the hardware isn't powerful enough to run but MAME can easily be set to show you its frame rate so you can tell for sure.

>>3333903
Post'em, nerd.
>>3335005
It's kind of ugly but fits the goofy ass B-Movie theme of the game perfectly. I mostly dig the part where they managed to capture events from the game and wire them to the cab's lighting. There's plenty of potential on that shit for immersive gimmicks, kinda like the light up buttons from the spy hunter cab.
>>3335049
The game itself was hard to play. Splatterhouse was a straight up side-scroller iirc so the femur controller wouldn't have been too bad. All the custom doodads and shit look so expensive though. No cheap looking stencil art slapped on the cabinet either. It looks just like an old sewer or something with an iron cover for the service box. I wonder how much more this cost than your average cab.
>>3335062
I can't read btw. Nice custom job.
>>3332049
The control scheme is important. Marble Madness isn't the same without a trackball.
>>3333916

>>3333916
Feetfags weren't invented yet.
>>3335476
A trackball is maybe okay considering how many games use it and that it can navigate Windows. You'll never have all the dials, twinsticks, drums, giant butts etc to play every single game though and the more you try to put on your panel the dumber it starts looking. I think generally it's best to just have some hidden USB ports and some various accessories tucked in the back or better yet to build additional cabinets with novel controls - been really wanting to get hold of a comfy gutted racekar cab myself to build on.
>>3338176
I'm sure I can stick a trackball and a racing wheel on here somewhere.

>About a year after Race Drivin' was released, Atari put out Race Drivin' Panorama, which uses 3 monitors to provide a 180ƒ view.
>(...)
>I got my hands on another Panorama so I could try the game with 4 side monitors(...)
>(...)
>There WAS a 5-monitor variation of Panorama on this hardware however, which was the police trainer. (...)The police trainer doesn't use the stick shift, but an automatic with the shifter behind the wheel. The police trainer has additional hardware so it can link up with several other police trainers, "review monitors", and other computers, one of which basically runs a laserdisc gun game to emulate what happens after the officer arrives on the scene. It seems to be a pretty impressive system.. I hope somebody can get thier hands on those ROMs someday.. I assume they should run normally on any Race Drivin' main board, other than the link functionality.
