How scary is this one compared to SH2?

Much scarier. SH2 is much more emotionally tiring, though.

The soundtrack is much scarier than anything SH2 had. It fucks with you too like playing frantic metal clashing in big dark rooms where there are absolutely no enemies to hurt you.

The Sewer theme sticks out to me due to the distorted goose call.

The game itself is more Mystery/Horror than SH2 depressing atmosphere. "Nowhere" is the greatest horror game location that I can think of.

I've never played the first silent hill, but I found 2 really terrifying. I love 3's aesthetic and a lot of the choices too. 4 is a mixed bag, I think it's got some great individual moments that you can point out, and everything within the room itself is absolutely perfect, but most of the mechanics outside the room are overdesigned and cumbersome.

Should I go back and play the first game? I've played Shattered Memories, which I liked but I know it's supposed to be way different.

Its the best game in the series period.
All other saying SH2 is better should literally grow up and find out there are other consoles besides PS2.

What about it is better?

They're two different kinds of horror.

SH1 is more blatant in its hellish imagery, lots of dead bodies, child-sized monsters, ghosts, etc.

SH2 is more of a claustrophobic experience where everything was designed to make you feel like you are utterly alone even in the presence of other characters. The way horror presents itself is more subtle in the sense that the monsters are relatively more plain looking and the scenery is less in your face about itself.

Silent Hill 2 is just plain depressing.

Silent Hill 1 was legitimately scary for me.
>>
In Silent Hill you can go ape shit with the crowbar

In Silent Hill 2 if you do that you'll hit the bitch and get a worse ending it's like there's a huge escort mission in the beginning
>>
I'm too scared of these kind of games, and also a bad player. Would i still experience the game if i just watch some longplay?

To a point, I think 2 and 3 lend themselves well to lets plays, but you wouldn't get the puzzle elements. Honestly I wish you could just turn the combat off, it would help a bunch of more casual players get into the series which I think can carry itself on atmosphere and puzzle design alone.

If you do your best to remember it's a game long enough to develop your skill at it you'll find it's incredibly rewarding to feel like you've conquered a fear. In fact, I think this was the original big draw of survival horror games and the original Silent Hill was the game where I had the most satisfying feeling of that (possibly rivaled by RE2). Silent Hill is especially good for it because melee combat is actually a viable option so you don't have to worry so much about conserving your ammo and can just practice swinging the metal pipe until you feel like you can actually defend yourself with it - until you get the fire axe then it's fucking on.

I know Thomas Ligotti wasn't an influence on Silent Hill, but this collaboration he did with Current 93 always makes me think of the series.

If you ever need horror that evokes the kind of strange horror of the first game, his short stories are really the closest thing I've found. Vastarian, The Bungalow House, Sect of the Idiot, The Night School, The Red Tower, etc. Although his books were very hard to find in print, Penguin recently released a new version of Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe in omnibus, and Teatro Grottesco is fairly easily available. If you're at all a fan of the games, I think you'll find them an extremely entertaining read.

Also, if you can find a copy, I also recommend trying to find the huge short story collection "The Weird" edited by Jeff Vandermeer. It is a treasure trove of amazing short fiction, and has some really evocative gems like Bruno Schultz' short story "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass", and a small novella called "The Plague Doctor", along with dozens of other stories that all lurk in the dark and the strange.

Don't want to totally derail this into a /lit/ thread but I think the games blend surrealism and horror in a way that few others attempt, and want to hopefully bring to light a few of the other things that evoke the same atmosphere.

having gone from SH2 to SH myself, it's sort of not, really.
>>
>>3309403

Not scarier, but it makes me think of death, fuck I can't play any silent hill game.
>>
>>3311803
Persona 3 might break your brain i that's the case, probably one of the most foreboding non horror games I've played.

Silent Hill is good, but SH2 is so much better.

SH is truly better than SH2

4 was a good game, dude

SH was a truly crushing, oppressing experience. It is for this reason that I must label it the greatest horror game of all time.

I actually stopped playing for a while when I got to the school, because i'd never experienced such a level of darkness and atmospheric fear in a videogame. Every time I went to open a door in that suffocating darkness I'd be nervous to the point of genuine anxiety and distress.

Anyway, I learned to man up and went on to beat the game, even picking up SH2 and beating that as well. But I will always remember the tense anxiety of the original silent hill.
>>
The first three are all masterpieces for different reasons.

The fourth is not nearly as bad as many will say, it just had big shoes to fill.

This guy gets it
>>
>>3313280
Double this. The problem is - it does not have much to do with "silent hill mythology' and also tries Castlevania SotN's trick and fails miserably on its half-way.
Though it still great. 1st and 4th are my favorite parts of sh.

Who else gets dizzy from SH2?
That shifting like drunk camera combined with the tank controls makes me really sick after an hour when played fullscreen on a big screen.
For some reason 1 works fine. Maybe it's because of more stationary camera and no smooth shifting around.
>>
>>3311741
Ligotti is sort of obscure - or not mainstream at least. Do you know any other good authors that are not well-known?
>>
>>3311468
Well, let's see... SH2 had:
>better voice acting
>better plot
>way less slowdown
>scarier enemies

I guess if you're a sucker for occult shit, then SH1 is more your thing, but even SH3 improves upon that aspect.
