What are some bizarre rumors you came across online when you were young?

I read one where the result was that when you met Saria in the Lost Woods, she would have a fish on her lap. The author seemed to think it was an intentional easter egg by Nintendo, and said it was a dirty joke by Nintendo and that he didn't want to explain it. At the time I didn't understand, but later realized maybe the fish was supposed to be sperm? The way he insisted it was vulgar joke and refused to explain it made it seem like it was true.

Anyway I just looked it up and it seems like it is a real glitch. Weird, kind of defeats the purpose of this thread, but lets still talk about weird rumors you read, true or not.

Pokemon Mew truck rumor.

One time the gamewinners website told me you could unlock Pichu in Mario Kart GBA.

>but later realized maybe the fish was supposed to be sperm?

What? No, man, it's like a common joke that vagina smells like fish. She had the fish over her crotch. I don't know if it was an intentional joke on the part of nintendo, but the author you're talking about almost certainly was implying that the joke was about pussy smelling like fish...

There was a Zelda fan site I used to frequent in the late '90s called HTLOZ (Hyrule: The Land of Zelda), and they had a page called "It's Real! It's Real!" which was a page dedicated to obviously fake secrets in Ocarina of Time. There were things like being able to catch Pokemon, a cheese mask, and a "gender medallion" that made Link look like a transvestite. I actually remember thinking some of the secrets were real because I was a stupid kid.

I remember the days of hearing of all sorts of ways to get Mew and 2nd Gen Pokémon like "Pikablu" in the original Red and Blue.

I have an experience with someone who managed to weaponize their childhood experiences.

A few months ago I made a thread on /v/ asking: I'm look for a permanent game-altering situation in Ocarina of Time where a non-numerical piece of data changes forever depending on a certain context, a necessity to get a true 100% file. It is not:

>the cow inside Link's house.
>the fourth rule to Fishing Hole.
>sinking the Fisherman's Hat.

Have you seen this non-player flag?

/end

I eventually found it, but what happened on that day, is something I was not expecting. Lurking /v/ was a super troll. The like of which you will never see. What he did, was somehow disinter an obscure rumor from the 90's and post it in my thread in a way that made sense.

He told me to Hookshot into the secret pathway in the Kakariko windmill, and activate Nayru's Love. Then grab the Cucco, and hover down to the tree with the laughing men were, and that upon talking to them their dialogue would change. Basically, he was subtlely referring me to Ocarina of Time's most well-kept secret.

There is lack of polish here because though the two men mention seeing Link surrounded by blue light, this never actually happens. Link never arrives in Kakariko after the Fire Temple because it would mess up the Bongo Bongo scene if you did fire third.

I already.knew about this, but had never considered doing that. After reverse googling the idea, I could only find posts online about it from way back, like around the release of MM or earlier.

Every so often you come across a cryptid online.

Can you (or someone else) explain what this means please? And what was it when you found it?

Oh, are you saying there was a piece of dialogue that permanently changes under certain conditions that you hadn't activated? How did you know you'd missed it, and what did it turn out to be?

In grade 4, I heard and believed all sorts of retarded rumours for pokemon blue/red.

I think someone told me that if you beat the elite 4 100 times, you could get 'pikablu', and I remember when yellow came out that someone told me that if pikachu fainted more then 10 times he would 'die' or leave your party and never come back... Being a dumb fucking homeschooled kid, I had a lot of free time to hang out and play Mario 64. I found a "code" online to unlock Luigi, that involved
>killing every boo in big boo's haunt
>circling the eternal star statue 3 times in each direction
>watching the box on the ship in jolly roger bay move back and forth SIXTY-FOUR times in a row without moving
>then ground-pounding each pedestal in the mirror room, where luigi would then appear in the mirror
And I tried that shit like 3 times in a row, wasting hours just watching the stupid box.

K.

When I initially made the post on /v/, I didn't know what I was looking for. All I knew is that there was something in the game I was forgetting.something that triggered an event flag acknowledging that you did something, given X condition. Perhaps that was a better way to word it.

The reason I forgot is because I remembered this thing being something you can only do at a "particular moment" in the game. So this sent me on a wild goose chase.

In reality, what it was is avoiding the 'illegally caught' label on your fish in the Fishing Pond with a 15 pounder, as a child. You can only do that by catching the Hylain Loach without the Sinking Lure. That was the thing and condition I was forgetting. It adds something to file completion, because the fish you catch in the future doesn't count towards the record in the past.
>>
>>3309356
Also, this is the only way to beat the record without getting Link's fish to go in the tank (since the Fisherman will refuse to keep the loach). If you want to take it one step further.

>>
>>3309361

Parents usually choose to homeschool for religious regions - that is, they want to indoctrinate their children with retarded anti-evolution propaganda or mold them into "God Warriors."

Although that may not be your intention at all. Either way, you're really restricting a child's world view by not allowing them to socialize with their peers. You can't shelter a child and force them to view the world from a one-sided perspective. When they step out into the real world for themselves, they're quickly going to realize how completely incompatible it is with the views you're instilled. And at that point, they may very well resent you... or become the next mall / campus / theater shooter.

Not online, but IRL:

Around the time Sonic Adventure 2 was released for the Dreamcast, there was a kid in our class who insisted he'd played a beta version of SA2 where Shadow had a gun and Sonic had a sword.

We all laughed.

After all, that's crazy, right? Sega wouldn't do that.
>>

As child Link there's three rules in the fishing pond: don't use sinking lures, don't litter, walk quietly.
If you go to the fishing pond as adult Link, there's a fourth: don't cast at anyone.
Players that have been paying attention will recognize this is a clue to start casting the fishing rod at the pond owner,
who mysteriously got a hat during the 7 year gap, and hook it. Turns out he's been weaing it because he started balding.
You can give it back to him, or lose it by casting it into the water a few times, though you'll have to pay him a few rupees in the latter case.

Losing his hat will make that loss permanent though. As a bonus, the guy even shows up in the staff roll without his hat.
>>
>>3309361

Please don't. My parents did that to me for several years for THUH RULIGON. It's bad. Maybe you don't intend to do that. Even if you're way better at teaching subjects that teachers are, and no evidence has been provided to support that assumption, I still would still strongly advise against it. Kids direly need to develop social skills so they can make friends, develop lasting relationships, do well in any vocation that requires these skills (most of them), and generally just being happy, and there's been substantial research done that shows the better you are able to make friends, the better off you are, not only psychologically, but physically as well.

A lot of the kids I dealt with once a week at church were exclusively homeschooled until HS, and they were paralyzed upon having to interact with people who were very little like them. It's not an exaggeration to say they had been retarded. Socially retarded. Their parents couldn't understand why grades were less than optimal, why they didn't have new/more friends. The school was, of course, blamed, instead of the fact that these kids had only ever interacted with a very small and homogenous group of people.

I don't want to derail the thread further, but I just saw this now and, well, it worked out fine once I got older and I started doing things for myself outside of what my mom wanted. Being homeschooled for 10 years severely crippled my social abilities. Not beyond repair, but for the first couple years of high school I was crazy autistic.

Plus, I never learned how to write in lowercase until I ended up actually going to school at like 11. Homeschooling + coddling = dumbass.

My thoughts are, if you can find a tutor for your kid that'll make sure they actually have an education, and involve them in other kid's groups(like summer camp), they might come out alright.

Did anyone know a kid like that? None of us, including him could read Japanese so we'd just come up with personal names for all the new Pokemon and shout suggestions about how to get past whatever obstacle he was stuck with at the time.

It was pretty magical. Actually looking at Pokemon Gold during the Pokemon craze was like having a window into a future where flying cars were real.

Homeschooling is an absolutely terrible idea.

As others have said, if for nothing else, school provides a mechanism by which children learn to socialize which is arguably one of the most important skills for an individual to develop. I'd also argue that, especially as one reaches higher grades, there exists more specialization of effort in terms of subjects taught by each individual teacher. There's no way that one individual can properly teach every higher level subject by themselves especially when pedagogy isn't even something they're practiced in.

Homeschooling tells my conscious that it would fuck with the child's social development. It also helps if they have friends when they move onto Middle School and suddenly people are talking about sex and drugs and dealing with class schedules.

Charter schools, private schools may be a better idea if you are looking for alternative education. But that's up to you. I just know that I hated my time in High School after every class I was interested in ended up being taught by some coach who didn't know the material.

I got a Pokemon Silver around two months before the european release.

I was in Uppsala, Sweden with my dad (he was a boxing trainer, and was bringing one of his boxers to the swedish championships) I was 10 years and had to kill some time, so I found a weird little game store, and they had a single copy of Pokemon Silver on the shelf. I couldn't believe it. Of course I begged my dad to buy it.

I was the fucking king for those two months until april. Some people accused me of having a fake game, some tried to grab my Game Boy right out of my hand if I wouldn't show it to them. I even caught some kids rummaging through my backback trying to find it.

Here you go friend:
First of all I want to say that I'm really upset with most of the people who think that the picture I took is a fake, some sort of photo composition or something like that.
Thats why because youre all losers, sorry to say this but you don't have the guts to go and find it for yourself, you need my help. And this guy that claims to have found it before me... C'mon boy,
you just want me to reveal the secret. And I will never reveal it unless you treat me with the respect I deserve. I found it and I deserve something, maybe Nintendo should give me a prize or at least a disscount for the next game.
And you still believe that Dark Link has something to do with this!!!! DARK LINK? Something else... it is not DARUNIA, its RAURU the SAGE WHO KEPT THE TRIFORCE SAFE FROM EVIL MINDS INSIDE THE TEMPLE OF LIGHT!!!!!! WHICH IS SEALED THANKS TO THE TEMPLE OF TIME!!!!!!
Unfortunatelly, Link opened the seal and Ganondorf entered the sacred realm....BUT.... if you can skip this step you can GET INSIDE THE TEMPLE OF LIGHT AND SEE THE TRIFORCE FLYING IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES.

STEP 1) first of all you should know that KAEPORA GAEBORA is RAURU incarnated. The OWL is RAURU helping you at the beginning of the game. If you want to know from where I get this information go to the SACRED FOREST MEADOW at the LOST WOODS and talk to the two GOSSIP STONES in there. They don't say that RAURU is the OWL , but they suggests this theory, and in fact RAURU IS KAEPORA GAEBORA. Ok, now....

STEP 2) .... ( I WILL NOT INLCUDE STEP 2, YOU'LL HAVE TO FIND THIS PART OF THE CHAIN BY YOURSELVES, OR WAIT A MONTH UNTIL I REVEAL EVERYTHING)
>>
>>3317037

STEP 3) SOMEWEHERE, SOMETIME, KAEPORA GAEBORA ( that is RAURU) will teach you a song. A song that you MUST LEARN ( Like the Scarecrow song) , so write it down on a paper or try to remember it.
"THE OVERTURE OF SAGES" is called and goes like this
C(up) + C(down) + A + C(right) + C(left) + C(up)
OF COURSE, you MUST LEARN the song in the game , therefore nothing will happen if you play the OCARINA, so don't be fool and say that the melody doesn't work.
By the way, You will learn this melody when youre child. ( what else do you need?)

STEP 4) Ok, now this is pretty simple, go to the TEMPLE OF TIME BEFORE YOU GET THE SWORD. IF YOU GET THE SWORD AND BECAME AN ADULT THEN THIS WILL NEVER WORK. STAND IN FRONT OF THE MASTERSWORD ( don't get it please!!!!!! ) and play the "Overture of Sages"

STEP 5) Just watch the Cinema display showing Link travelling to the TEMPLE OF LIGHT. If you followed the story you'll see that this time you'll not be sealed inside the temple just as the regular way. And therefore Ganondorf will not be able to get the triforce because the SEAL IS STILL INTACT because you DIDN'T MOVE THE SWORD.
NEXT STEPS) RAURU will talk and talk about you, him, Hyrule, The triforce and so on. He will ask you if you want to see the sacred relic ( its very funny to see the different dialogues, so don't worry, say no, say yes.... eventually he will show it to you inside a dark room or something like that.
Rauru stands in front of you. The camera moves to an angle from behind Link. Rauru will move his arms and a hole will open in the ceiling. You'll see a light beam. The Room will turn blue. And one by one the triforces will come out from the hole and will get together. Then theres a rotation of the camera around the whole scene. You can even see the triforce from behind and inside the triangle that is formed you can see Link looking at it.

Then Link will move forward as if he would like to touch it but Rauru will tell you that its not the time for you to get it. So I'm sorry to dissapoint all of you but YOU CAN'T ACTUALLY GET THE TRIFORCE, YOU CAN ONLY WATCH IT FOR ABOUT THREE MINUTES, NO MORE.
Later Link will be returned to the Temple of Time and everything will be just as before, as if nothing had happened. So I'm sorry but , the mark among the medallions in the status screen is just that, a mark and will never hold the triforce icon in it because its only a decorative element. ( but IN FACT IT GIVES THE CLUE.... notice that the image with the medallions and the triforce in the quest status screen looks identical to the pedestal where the mastersword is kept)

So as you can see it was not that difficult. You don't need to do stupid and silly quests like exploding the gossip stones or talking to Dark Link... Or that GLITCH in the wasteland that everybody thinks is a temple!!!!!

BUT OF COURSE, I'm not telling the most important part... how to get the "Overture of Sages". Do you think I'm stupid? I'm sorry , this is my little secret and believe me, You'll suffer, you'll suffer a lot. ;-P

PS: Falco, the picture is real. I took the picture with a Kodak Gold film inside my room in complete darkness. Obviously I didn't use flash. ( I'm not stupid, I don't know how to use pictureshop or painter but I DO KNOW HOW TO TAKE A GOOD PICTURE!!!!)
And let me say something If you don't like Link's cap then go complain with Nintendo. Link is looking up to the triforce, the angle is different as the one in the actual game. Also, its not easy to take a picture to a screen, I was luky that its possible to see the triforce.
ah good times

Don't listen to those other people. School does nothing for your social skills. I went to school, made one friend in elementary school, moved schools, made no friends in middle school, made 2 friend in high school, then later one of them killed himself, made 0 friends in college, and now I only have the one friend from high school who I talk to sometimes online.

School does not teach social skills. You will not learn social skills in school. It is extremely possible to go through school without making friends or developing good social skills.

I was homeschooled and there isn't a day of my life which passes where I don't mourn for the normal, socially integrated life I could have had. It is a selfish choice; your children are not an extension of yourself. Don't even do it for a year. I know three other kids who were home schooled , and they're all wrecks as adults. The other home schooled kids I knew back then are human tragedies now.

Just don't do it. Do the right thing for your kids. They deserve a shot at a normal life.
