What does /vr/ think of the pce? Was it a second-rate SNES? Or something ahead of its time.

More like a suped up nes/80s japanese computer

>second-rate SNES
The PCE came out even before the MD in Japan. It was really more of a bridge between 3rd and 4th gen.

Wonderful console. In that sweet spot graphically where it wasn't capable of fmv, so it dodged the bullet of shitty sega CD style "interactive video", and instead we got games with gorgeous pixel art based cinematics, bigger sprites, more varied artwork and CD quality audio. The pinnacle of 16 bit CD gaming imo.
>>
>>3299562
It actually was capable of FMV as can be seen in the Sherlock Holmes games and Guliver Boy. The thing is that FMV was more a thing overseas
>>
>>3299564

Well fuck my ass. I'm sure glad most games opted for pixel art cinematics then, it has aged vastly better.
>>
Better than shitty snes and genesis
>>
Dumb question. Why wasn't the pce marketed in the west?
>>
>>3299612
It was, but it was a failure.

That's the PCE-CD. We're talking about the PCE in general.
>>

the op did post a turbo
>>
>>3299553

Cons:
Feels like an underpowered Genesis, with equally crappy audio.
Relatively small game library.
Many of the best games are uncommon/rare.
The add-on systems are abysmal.

Pros:
The selection of good games is pretty good, there's not a ton of shitty games.
Hu-Cards are the greatest media format ever.
The controller is pretty good, but not great.
>>
>>3299620
Except you can't really talk about the PC Engine games without mentioning the CD-ROM2 System, since the greater half of its library were on CD.
>>
>>3299553

No, they were pretty good. Liked a lot of the games.
>>
>>3299647
>The add-on systems are abysmal.
Dude, the PCE-CD has one of the coolest libraries ever. Arguably it wasn't powerful enough to make the most of the extra storage (lots of uncompressed low-res images and in-hardware animation instead of pre-rendered video) but at the same time it's shortcomings also created a really unique aesthetic.
>>
>>3299553
make sure you get the capacitors replaced. I've heard bad caps affected 100% of the units.
>>
Only good for playing Rondo of Blood, but since Dracula X Chronicles is superior, there's no reason to care about it.
>>
>>3299553
turbo was awesome. friend of mine had one when I was a kid.

been a closet fan since then.

What are some of the best underhyped games (I know of all the main ones) on the cd that I don't need to know japanese for?

also pic related is my controller. The surface plastic coating has sorta come loose but still clings. If I peel it off will the decals underneath easily wear off or are they baked on?

What would you consider "the main ones"? The only CD import people universally talk about is Dracula X.
>>
>>3303712
River City Ransom has an excellent remake. You don't need Japanese as long as you've played it before

Tenchi Wo Kurau is a fun Capcom beatemup
>>
>>3303712
Dungeon Explorer 1 on card, and 2 on CD. 5 player coop. Its kinda gauntlet mixed with Zelda and a leveling system, pretty fucking fun with friends.
>>
>>3299578
The sprite art cutscenes are indeed awesome. And the sad thing is that there are Sega CD games that use them too (not just lords, which is a port). Just not many.
>>
>>3299553
Oh my god, it's a prototype PS3 slim

dude, that's just like the packing plastic. It was never meant to be on there past the day some kid opened up his new controller.

It was a great console with a (mostly) terrible game library.
>>
>>3304836
>It was never meant to be on there past (day one)

You'd be very surprised at how many used electronics I buy with the plastic still on them. PERSONALLY I peel the shit off right away unless you really can't tell it's there, or it's a shiny sticker on a matte finish

It sucks that everything turbo/pce is fucking expensive as shit these days.

From what I can tell the best setup you can get is a turboduo? because it plays hucards and cd's

Duo-R

Duo has faulty caps and Duo-RX has a goofy controller

There was some really old gaming webcomic that made some great Johnny Turbo jokes, but I can't find it now.

Don't forget It Came from the Desert. It was hilariously craptastic as a game but did have FMV.

I would love to get into collecting Turbo Duo / PC engine but they're really expensive, even for just the system. The games prices are absurd so in all likeliness I'd just buy an Everdrive.

>The games prices are absurd so in all likeliness I'd just buy an Everdrive.
A good plan, but there are some value titles like the highly rated Street Fighter II Hucard, which sells for peanuts (and was considered something of a miracle when it came out for it's accurate port and megabit count).

For the CD titles, just burn 'em. Someone even produced near perfect boots of the expensive Sapphire a few years back too. No reason to buy the overpriced Turbo Duo collector bait either, just go with a Japanese Duo or Duo-R. An original PC Engine Duo can be recapped and will be good as new, otherwise go for the Duo-R.

Game library is decent, and it's a good thing that HuCard everdrives are cheaper than the usual everdrive for more popular systems. I like the CD library generally, but there is soooooooo much garbage.

I'm trying out Blood Gear right now, and it's an action RPG by Westone (of wonderboy fame). I'm only a little into it, but it's ok so far. A hardcore group of fans gush about the game, but only an hour in and it hasn't grabbed me - maybe because the enemies feel a little pedestrian and the action halting. Maybe it will get better - at the very least it's not that expensive (and less expensive to burn!).

Speaking of cheap, I found a copy of Moonlight Lady for $15. Glad I paid only that much, because two chapters in and its pretty mediocre. I hate the high-pitched Japanese shriek your character does whenever she attacks - which, in a top-down action game a la Zelda (but nowhere near as good!), is very often. It gets a little better once you get the second (of three) characters, but enemy placement and AI leave a lot to be desired.

>>3306675
It fits the window because it was supposed to shield the face plate during packing and shipping from dust, styrofoam, etc.

>>3299647
>Feels like an underpowered Genesis, with equally crappy audio.
While I like some of the chiptune audio, PCE chiptunes always feel fairly underwhelming, especially when compared to the richer sounds coming out of a Mega Drive/Genesis. The contrast is always bad in the CD games that put all their eggs into voice acting scenes and have little blippy chip music for the game itself.
