I love skies of arcadia, but I wouldn't call it brilliant. It's flawed and very cliche, but yet at the same time does it in a way that's so perfect you can overlook the flaws and enjoy it as a very good rpg.
Wild Arms 3 is either comparable or flat out better than Skies of Arcadia in every way.
Also shares some of the same development staff.

I played the hell out of this on my Dreamcast. I bought it on a whim at Kmart. Few years ago I found the Gamecube version like new at a yard sale for $5 and snatched it up. Been sitting in my backlog ever since.

It's pretty similar, aside from not taking place IN THE SKY
Lots of cool enemies, ancient ruins, stuff to search for and discover, a vehicle to upgrade and battle with, EPIC HEROISM and other fun stuff
The battle system is better in Wild Arms
It doesn't have that neat thing where the music changes in the middle of battle though

Agreed. I've never played another game that so perfectly captured the feeling of adventure.
The wonderful thing this game did, from a storytelling standpoint, was to constantly tease the player with things that should feel impossibly to accomplish, i.e. "Nobody's ever escaped the Grand Fortress!", "Flying through the dark rift is impossible!", " Nobody's ever been beneath the clouds!", etc. And yet with time and diligence, you accomplish all of these tasks. The game makes you ask questions that you earn the answers to, it feeds you this sense of old-world ignorance that you personally get to dispel. You start off as a dork without his own boat, and end the game having essentially conquered the world.

That's one of the highlights of the game. I love vyses optimism. Dad's going to be executed tomorrow? I'll make a plan and we will get through this alive. Vyse never acts like a whiny emo faggot like cloud from FF7 which some people have compared it to, he's free of angst. It's truly one of the best RPGs to me.
