I've only sat down and actually beaten FFIX last year, and while it's not my favorite from the series gameplay and story-wise, the atmosphere was so on point it actually gives me nostalgic feelings despite me having beaten it so recently.

The plot is a plainly half-improvised mess and the characters kind of suck, but the game is worth it overall, even if for the 9999 comfy main continent settings alone
Probably the weakest game in the series, if the fact that the same team was split between development of this and FF10 is any indication. Forced class roles, linear world and plot, cinematics every 5 minutes into the game and constant slowdown and all add up to a bland experience. I force myself to play through the game once and that was enough for me.
I found a way to very safely beat Grand Dragons at the start of Disc2.
I know it's possible in Disc 1 too, but in Disc2 it's a lot safer if you know what you're doing.
I don't get why people hate so much on this game having the characters have specific roles. I like it way more than other FFs where everyone can do everything.

For killing Grand Dragon up Gizamaluke's Grotto ?
If here are hints : Grand Dragons have 3 attacks. 1 physical attack that hits one character at a time, a poison attack that hits one character at a time, and a thunder attack that hits everyone.
You're going to want to be immune to poison and thunder, that way, he will only be able to kill one character at a time. He's fast though, takes many turns, but if you keep one character to revive KO'd characters, with a ton of phoenix down in your inventory, you'll be able to kill him.
Having EVERYONE be immune to poison and thunder is not possible in Disc1, but it is possible at the start of disc2 when you get back to Zidane&co. IIRC your team will be: Zidane, Vivi, Freya, and Quina.
- Another hint:not everyone can equip the same gear, so not everyone will learn poison immunity the same way
- Another hint :at the very start of disc2, before going back to Zidane, you're with Steiner and Garnet in another place. Items that you acquire when playing as them, and that you leave in your inventory, will be available to Zidane&co when you get back to them
Even that way it still provides to be a challenge though. This was like a side quest for me and I'm glad I figured it out, when you think of it, the items required for full poison and thunder immunity are hard to find at that point, and when you know the whole thing it makes no doubt the devs did that so the most curious and hardened players would find everything.
So then I could grind my way to have Zidane, Vivi, Freya and Quina be lvl50 at the start of disc2. Steiner and Garnet were still lvl 15 though... but at least Amarant and Eiko, when joining your team, have a level that's the even of all your levels, so they'll start pretty high.
You WILL miss the best gear stats boosts when leveling up that way though, but going through the game at lvl50 was hilarious to me.

BTW this is no way an "easy grind". Even if I tell you where to find all the gear required, it takes time, and then it still takes patience and more time to kill the Grand Dragon.

Many consider VIII and X to be mediocre games at best and when it comes to FFIX, it has great disc 1 content with good atmosphere to it. If you can't appreciate the game's comfiness then it may not be for you.
Personally I played FFVII in my teens and only got to IX way later but it's still my alltime favorite which I have only grown to appreciate more after each playthrough.
