Why were the letters off-center?

So you could see the letters by only lifting your thumb slightly, or moving it to the edge (and still being able to push the button).

It's more ergonomic than having them straight in a line like the NES paddle, your thumb curves a bit more naturally to them
There's a reason controllers have almost never had buttons in a straight line since then, usually with a slant, curve, or diamond shape to their layout

Why was the D-pad on the left side when your dominant hand should be controlling the D-pad for better precision?
Why is the row of buttons the wrong direction? If it were diagonal the other way, you could push both buttons at the same time without adjusting.

Because hitting face buttons with your weaker hand is even worse.
Was there any reason why every Nintendo controller has the AB buttons aligned from right to left? I'd imagined it was a Japanese thing, since they typically read from right to left.

A is the primary button, B the secondary. A is at the default or resting position, B at the non-default position. They're not in reading order
