Why do some HDTVS make noises when displaying scan lines? My UHDTV is changing pitch when I zoom in and out of scan line patterns. It seems also to be NES era specific problem as some games during that era use similar patterns for backgrounds or skies, so the tv is squeeking even when no crt shader is applied in those games. Is that why old tube tvs make those high pitched unbearable noises? Is it because of scan lines?

No, that was the flyback transformer. Has nothing to do with scanlines.

I think noise is effected by contrast so if the screen is all white do you notice more noise?

no, gone. only when white and black are really close to each other.

I feel like it's probably a bad thing for your HDTV to be doing.

yeah i feel so too. but most of the times i don't even notice it over the games sound. it just catches my ears in silent passages or when i look at screen shots i took.

Apparently it's common for a lot of LCDs. Test it yourselves: http://thume.ca/screentunes/

// Some commenters produced theories including that this is caused by the expansion and contraction of capacitors/inductors in the display as the screen scans down and the black pixels take a different amount of power than the white pixels. This theory suggests that varying the width of the bars would change the pitch, which indeed does happen.
