Why did belt scrollers just suddenly die out after 1994, /vr/?
>>
>belt scrollers

But that's a side scroller beat'em'up.
>>
>>3275085
>belt scroller
It's beat'em up, fag.
>>
>>3275105
>side scroller beat'em'up.
No, that's a dash and punch.
>>
>>3275085
Spike Out and God Hand are the evolution.
>>
Meme scrollers
>>
>>3275110
You can't play those multiplayer, though.
>>
>>3275109
No, it's called path and punch
>>
I call 'em shuffle n' scuffles.

real answer: 3D - 2D beatemups were an attempt at making 3D game spaces, so naturally the genre would turn to 3D environments once the tech progressed. Modern day beatemups are like DMC1-4, God of War, Dante's Inferno, and the like. Same concept and similar execution.
>>
>>3275085
Because technology advanced to a point where developers could start creating different gaming experiences rather than wasting time on such simple/linear games.

Don't get me wrong, those old beat'em ups are still awesome to go back and play through emulation but it makes you realize that the main objectives of those games was for you to keep dumping quarters in the machine to advance.

Once you play them at home, you can literally run through them in less than an hour.
>>
>>3275165
battle n' skidaddlers was a common term
>>
>>3275085
The belt scroller meme doesn't even make sense, because most beat em ups were not belt scrollers.

What? Name some that aren't. I know they exist but truly flat 2D ones are rare.
>>
>why did x genre die off
>coincidentally at about the same time every other 2D video game genre died off
blah blah something about casuals and Halo
>>
>>3275196
thats the point. the post was satirical
>>

Comics Zone, nigga.
>>
Because you keep calling beat 'em up games belt scrollers.

If you'd stop doing that, the genre would make a comeback.
>>
>>3275315
I doubt that.
>>
>>3275317
There's only one way to know for sure, anon.
>>
We at least Dragon's Crown a couple years back, and it was superb.
>>
>>3275105

If we keep repeating it over and over and over then eventually it will become a meme and we'll consider it funny.

>it's the 4chan way.
>>
>>3275324
This! It pretty much ruined Golden Axe games. Sometimes I'll still want to play Chronicles of Mystaria though. Dragon's Crown was based off of that one.

Same thing for Scott Pilgrim the game. Any classic beat 'em up feels inferior now and I wish I was just playing that instead.

Sure, after you spent countless amount of continues learning the game. Then you can sit down and beat it in one quick sitting.

Are people really interested in the actual discussions on these threads, or is all part of a overgrown meme to get "actshully it's called beat'em up" kind of responses?
>>
>>3277064
>>couldn't think of anything so I'm gonna be a bitch ass nigga and do what bitch ass high as do, they bitch.
>>
>>3277064
It's the Gackt poster trying to force a meme. He's also tried to force a "weird video game fetish" meme via Galaga.
>>
3d killed the genre in too many ways (not enough hardware power, difficulty in getting gameplay working in a 3d environment, difficulty in getting multiplayer working with a 3d camera, and gameplay being either long with many upgrades to be a casual brawler, or too short and difficult for normies who don't bother playing a level twice if they get stuck).

God Hand is probably the best "modern" beatemup game, that also uses 3d.
