Currently downloading Dragon Warrior 7 to emulate on my laptop - This will be the second game of the series since I played Dragon Quest VIII years ago, which I fucking loved to pieces for its undeniable charm, fantastic story (mad but fantastic story) and brutal difficulty. I would like to replay it but I need to buy a new copy.
Am I to expect a similar feel with Dragon Warrior VII? Or can anyone recommend some of the older titles?

VII is VERY VERY VERY long, it will probably take 120 hours to complete. I recommend waiting for 3ds version, from my understanding it cuts a lot of the bullshit of the ps1 version, in the ps1 version you don't fight your first slime until like 4-5 hours in where in the 3ds version I heard it's now only like a hour. I recommend going to III or V now, those and VIII are considered the best of the series. My personal favorite is IV and I highly recommend that one aswell. The game's connections are loose enough that really you should just look into each game and play what sounds the most in your taste.
I'd suggest picking one from 3-6 to instead, 7 is probably not a great starting point.

Yeah, first encounter. I have heard the 3ds version fixes a lot of the fat seen in the ps1 version. If you want story V is very good for that while still being very charming. VIII is actually thought by many to be easier and beginner friendly so ifvyou found that one difficult the others will be even rougher. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Snes version is kinda primitive, one of the biggest things is you only have a max of 3 party members while the PS2/DS version you can have 4. I recommend trying to run the PS2/DS version if you can, still my first was actually the SNES version of V and I liked it a lot so if you can't still play it.

Warning up front, DQ/DW VII and IV are two of my personal favorite JRPGs of all time. That said -
Depending on how you play, it's more like two hours in that you fight your first battle, though I could be exaggerating, since I haven't played it from top to bottom in a long time.
VII IS long though, quite possibly the longest JRPG out there (discounting stuff like Azure Dreams). If you're like me, you'll be sad when it actually ends, or if you're like everybody else, it'll drag on, and on, least until Hamelia, than to Coastal. It's also one of the more linear games, in that you're stuck within certain areas as the game goes on.
I'm gearing up to play VI myself.

V is alright, though you may enjoy the PS2/DS version more. Unpopular opinion here, but I liked IV a lot more than V. In my case (snes version), it was really easy, and felt kind of basic for being the sequel to IV. The monster raising, and family stuff is cool though.

It's straightforward, clean, polished, big, and fun. Great music too (though there aren't too many tracks overall). IMO it's the last great oldschool JRPG.
