Time Trax's theme on the Genesis may have been based on Donna Summer's "I Feel Love". But lots of disco songs sound like that, so maybe it's a coincidence.

the whole "XXX is a fraud" is so overblown.

>It was common practice for game composers to recreate famous tracks with limited sound hardware.

That's funny. I posted this when I was tired and looking back I thought the Wham/Shinobi example was the weaker of the two.

Anyway the Ristar chorus (0:34), especially that lead-in to it, to me sounds like it was derived from the strings of the Soul II Soul chorus that appear after "Yellow is the color of sun rays" (1:33)
>>
>>3257181
that is also a sonic 3 theme
>>
>>3257584
Not him anon, but I agree - while the chord progression and style are completely different, the actual melody from Vega's theme seems to have been lifted almost entirely from the Star Trek theme.

A well publicised similar example would be the Australian band from the 80's Men at Work and their song Land Down Under. They lifted a melody from some folk song that I can't remember and had a flute play it. I'm sure both pieces of music don't sound similar at all but they were sued over the plagiarised melody and lost.

Full disclosure, I had known about Mars for some time now (had been dragged to symphony stuff at an early age, hated every minute of it back then but appreciate it now), BUT I never actually knew the name of it. Not until I was watching an interview with Black Sabbath, and Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi both mentioned the influence for the opening riff to the song Black Sabbath (which was Mars).

Franky Knuckles and dudes like that pioneered that sound. It's kind of like how everyone sounds like Skrillex now.

I wouldn't say the dude is a hack based on your criteria. He basically was like "wouldn't it be cool to make some Detroit house for this game". I think that's pretty cool.

Koshit ripped almost every note from Shamen. It's essentially the same music, but played in Genesis hardware.
