What is the most impressive-looking 2D or 3D retro game in your opinion?

3D: Vagrant Story

Can impressive mean art style and not just technical?

Because the Ecco games are beautiful
>>

Unreal Tournament
>>

For 3D, obviously anything on Dreamcast.

DC is the last console that aimed for hardcore gamers instead of dudebros and casuals, so it counts as retro.
>>
>>3253837
My nigga.

Also I'd mention Panzer Dragoon for 3D, it may not be the hands down most impressive-looking but I'd bet it's at least top ten material and it sure was visually striking.

Also, first for Donkey Kong Country 2 as a goddamn beautiful 2D game

Shenmue is more or less the first "Modern" videogame.
>>

I swear it's just one or two Sega fanboys on here shitting up the place with DC posts about how great their failed system was.
It has its gems, but they are few and far between.

i bet you are a Genesis baby. I dont give 2 shits about the DC being retro or not, literally. Whats pathetic is trying to defend your favorite console like "HURR DURR IM HARDCORE AND YOU DONT". Shut the fuck up and go play some sonic adventure you dumbshit.

Literally /vr/

3D: Unreal ('98). Fire made of particles. Amazing sky, eerie atmosphere. Stunning, yet UNREALISTIC. After Half-Life game devs forgot that games have to be beautiful, and pushed for "muh realism" even if that meaned making game ugly.
>>
>>3257162
Shenmue wasn't even it's most popular game though. If anything Soul Calibur and Sonic sold way more.

MGS, mostly because I'm sick of posting Toy Story over and over. It could even count as the best looking Dreamcast game, thanks to Bleem.

/vr/ considers anything made 1999 and before as retro. Though the real reason why it's considered retro is so we can circlejerk about how great it is.

kek, you never played shenmue.

He probably has. If you were alive during the time Shenmue was described as a game with very shallow combat but lots of detail, back story and great graphics. And of course great mini games. The core game itself is like a poor man's virtual fighter.

That definitely goes to shenmue 2 overall.

Soul calibur had some cool things I'd never seen before like thighs jiggling and stuff very good looking game at the time.

Dead or alive 2 was arguably the best looking fighter though

Jesus christ I just read this and thought "surely GBA is retro if the DC is?"

>look up date of gba release
>2001

w h a t

I have no idea why I thought it was older. I guess because the DS came out only 3 years later. Crazy!
>>
>>3261491
This is why /vr/ should have been pre-1995, end of fucking story. There is a huge disconnect between pre-1995 gaming and gaming afterwards, and THAT is what is "retro", not "b-b-but I played this as a kid and now I'm 18 barely out of being a kid, that should be totally retro!!!" retardation.
>>
>>3261491
>>3261556
Nah, I think I'd be fine with adding xbox/gc/ps2/GBA eventually.

Gaming after those became a totally different beast and that was the "transition" gen so I think gen 7+ should stay out of retro anything forever. (well until a long time in the future anyway)

But then maybe in ten years I'd say the same about the post ps2 era consoles too.

Retro by definition tends to mean anything 15+ years past (I'd say discontinued in the case of consoles)

The biggest issue with adding more to "what do we define as retro here?" would be if you added ps2/xbox/gc there'd be a lot more games and whatever people could mention and it could lead to a less defined and more clusterfuck-y board.

That said given a long enough time the board will become stale with the same threads. There's only so much you can say about things that have already passed.
>>
>>3261637

I think /vr/ should be fixed at 1999 (or even earlier, like 1991), and we spin off a second, slightly looser board with a moving >15-year window.
>>
>>3261646

If you were going to do that I think '99 is the best fixing point.

'91 would be a bit too early, limiting, and slow the board to a complete crawl imo

I think a secondary looser spin off for the 2000+ era would be the better choice but they'd probably never do that since /v/, /vg/, and /vr/ already exist.

But I'm just an anon and I don't make the rules so what does what I think matter!!!
>>
>>3261646
>more board splintering
Oh boy, just what we need.
>>
>>3261657
SORRY FOR DERAILING YOUR THREAD OP

Best 2d is always Metal Slug

I was replaying another world the other day though and that game while not *pretty* in stills is a masterpiece in motion still. It's so fluid.

I remember Flashback having similarly nice animation but it has been a good 20+ years since I have played that so I'm probably imagining it a bit better than it is. Like Prince of Persia.

I really wish I'd kept my Amiga. Regrets.

>That said given a long enough time the board will become stale with the same threads. There's only so much you can say about things that have already passed.

This. We could limit the board to 1991 or some other defined date, but how active of a board would it be over time?

I know one of the main concerns about "opening the flood gates" to Xbox/PS2 era newfriends is that we would have a number of nostalgic, "anybody played X" threads. But don't we already have countless posts about Mario 64 and Sanic?

There is always going to be a level of nostalgia interlaced in any discussion of older topics. Let it be. Appreciation for the past shouldn't be excluded because you were a 30-something when it happened.

2D: Hm Kirby's Dreamland 3? Ganbare Goemon 4? Rayman?

lmao

you are right if you say conker is the most impressive 3D game from 5th gen though

Thing is I'd fine with only the pre-1999 thing on the board if there was actually board where you could talk about post-1999 games. But we don't have that. /vg/ is a porn board and /v/ is a "lose your shit because some people on a different website have different political beliefs than you" board. And the only reason we can have any sort of actual games discussion on /vr/ is because this is one of the smaller, newer boards... and even then said discussion is pretty damned shit.

So basically I see allowing 6th gen stuff and the GBA as "holy shit, I can actually talk about those games."

Daytona is a weird choice, is it because it was so early in 3d tech? I suppose it is a huge improvement over Virtua Racing, but personally I think Sega rally was more impressive.
>>
>>3262608
This guy gets it.
>>
>>3257150

I don't agree with him for the reason but it's borders on retro. One could argue that not only was it not in the same gen as the PS2/Xbox but also that a lot of the games it had were in the arcade around the 64 PS1 gen.
