Hey /vr/

I'm looking for an emulation machine that will run up to the 5th generation.

.mkv support so I can watch my Chinese cartoons as well.

I've looked at the raspberry pi, but I wasn't sure if there were better alternatives.

Get an nVidia Shield Portable, for on the go, or an Android device of some kind with HDMI out. Pi might be a bit too pokey.

Why the fuck do people want raspberry pi's

Pi's are cool but using them for emulation is retarded.

Just get a cheap laptop or tablet.

It sounds good on paper. But it's too much work for too little of results.

Seeing as anime encoders are on the forefront of jumping onto every new meme, many groups are using x264's 10bit profile which can't be hardware decoded anywhere, and some have already started using H.265 which will become the new standard anyway.

In other news, get an Intel NUC or similar powerful but low power hardware for emulation and meme video playback in the living room. I have no regrets, unlike my RPi2 which I can't find use for since it's mediocre at everything.

Pi would be okay for 3rd and 4th gen if it actually had a proper analog video output. It's composhit 480i only and won't do proper 240p. If you're okay with HDMI out and a few frames of lag it's alright.

Portables:
Nvidia Shield Portable works if xbox-controller sized is fine. Probably chinese cartoon on this too, not sure. New 3DS LL if it needs to be pocket-able, no cartoons though. My linux thinkpad x200 only ran me $110 to get it set up with SSD + 9cell, and it plays fifth gen just fine. Plays .mkv files too, but I'm no weeb so I can't vouch for 10-bit.

They make "wintel" NUC clones for ~$100 if you're willing to do battle with drivers etc. Also they have x86 tablets around that price range, could maybe find one with an HDMI out.

>5th gen

Oops, New 3ds can't play 5th gen.

A PSP can handle PSX just fine, but basically no N64 (only SM64) and SNES emu sucks donkey balls.

Theres a GPD device already on the market that can do somewhat choppy N64, and I think the Win (not out yet) will be more powerful.

Anyways your best option is to pick up an old laptop, with either a VGA or HDMI output depending on display preference.

x264 has a obscenely impressive compression rate, while maintaining the quality intact.
Sadly my XP machine doesn't run it at normal speed.

Nothing does N64 well because there are no good N64 emulators. All the CPU power in the world only gets you partway there.
