In a thread on I think /v/ someone spoke highly of a visual novel called Yu-No that had a crazy sci-fi plot or something. So I decided to try playing it, so I looked up some info and apparently it is basically a porn game. Did I get trolled or does it have a good story? Like maybe they wanted to make a game with a good story but they needed to include porn for the sales. Or am I taking the first step down the deep, dark rabbit hole of "I play porn games for the story"?
Okay you have to understand that for a VN (virtual novel) to succeed in Japan especially during the 90s it almost had to have adult content because the fappers were the ones keeping the doors unlocked and the lights on, know what I mean? There were developers who really wanted to make their VNs good games and Yu-No is probably the best example of this. There's some sex stuff at the very beginning and then subsequent adult sequences are SO far separated that you will likely forget you're playing an "adult" game before you see another one. These sort of games focus intensely on the relationships the protagonist forms so sex scenes feel sort of natural like a payoff for all the investment. My personal opinion on how healthy that aspect of these games really is psychologically but Yu-No is definitely a game with good mechanics and a good narrative and a good choice for a first VN unless you don't want to invest that much time in which case try Snatcher. It has much less adult content (none on Sega CD) and it's also really good but nowhere near as complex.

You basically hit the nail on the head. It hooks the player with a bunch of sexy ladies and then you get drawn in to the interesting story. Eventually, the sex becomes an afterthought. It's also got a pretty neat gameplay system that more or less revolutionized the VN scene.

I don't remember any. Fastest to reach is Mitsuki's and it should still take several hours. Ayumi's is tricky to reach if you haven't fully understood the save system yet.

That's a little bit disingenuous, as good as Yu-No is and it stands firmly as a great adventure game (if not the greatest) it still takes a lot from the eroge formula, specially each route being rewarded with banging a girl.
The actual narrative might not be motivating the character to pursue the girl on each route but that's the general outcome.
Sex is a big part of Yu-No, and you'd have to twist and turn not to call it porn. Which isn't to say it's a bad thing, that's not what I'm trying to get, it's well presented (except for 2 instances imo) but at least don't lead the other OP on a disingenuous road.
OP I had the exact same reservations as you, I'm kind of a prude but the game fascinated me, so I just took the dive and it's one of the best games I ever played. Don't let the eroge nature scare you, if you like Japanese adventure games like Snatcher and such you'll like this one as well.

YU-NO is an experience of a life time. Finished it in 5 days, reading it straight. It might be obtuse at times, but you'll feel like an accomplished man after finishing it.Fair warning for incest (and implied incest) and pseudo-NTR though. The game really piles the sex scenes on during the second part and it's a bit jarring.
Anyways, what I'm saying is that you should play it. Try it blind, take a guide if you get stuck.

I actually do play some even modern bad (and old) eroge "for the story." There's a certain bad b-movie appeal to the really annoying characters (especially on the part of the player surrogate) and contrived events. As a person who has grown to appreciate bad action movies there's a lot of joy to be had in finding a laugh in an underperforming VN. Often the ero is so bland you won't be aroused anyway. That being said, I'm not implying Yu-no is this way.
