what does /vr/ think of heretic?
it's good. inb4 "hexen is better"
it's shit. hexen is worse.
shit gameplay, shit level design. cool art style and music though.

oh there's more
>>3235775
It has it's charms. Enemy variety is limited though. This was fun to play when it first came out; but there's no RPG elements or anything special. It's got its own feel to it. Nobody really ever modded it or did anything after Hexen came out.

Doom clone which is better than Doom.
>>3235775
Remember guys that this is the act of a single person.
>>3235827
it's really not though
>stuck with like 4 weapons at once not the whole range you get in heretic over some slow af drip feed
>no classic level approach in episodes to dive straight in
>well those are my main complaints since they're pretty similar :p
>>3237095
at least it's /vr/ related
>>3237131
The same fucking asshole spams this phrase all across 4chan to start flame wars.
It is both hilarious and sad.
>>3237157
>what does <board name> think of x?
really? youve NEVER seen that phrase before? its so bad on other boards that i have to filter out the board name because any thread made like that is always a shitposter
>what does /tv/ think of the new ghostbusters?
>what does /mu/ think of lady gaga?
>what does /co/ think of rick and morty?
just stop doing it
>>3237165
of course I know that the phrase exists, I just didn't know that any other threads were using it at the time
I'm not the same person posting the other threads in your screenshot
>>3237095
>spam
Is that what we call actual discussions now?
>>3235775
Needed moar shotgun.
>>3237183
the crossbow was pretty nice, but quickly started to lack in power as tougher enemies showed up
>>3237182
What does /vr/ thinks about spam?
>>3237165
In those cases though they are usually just baiting people to have vitriolic responses.
With /vr/ we talk about older things so you wont get as much "shilling" and trolling bait.
>>3237237
>With /vr/ we talk about older things so you wont get as much "shilling" and trolling bait.
PFffffffffffffffffffff hahahahahhahahahahaha
>>3237252
I mean think about it. /tv/ is mostly people trolling other people about whatever movie is new/popular, /v/ is the same with videgames, somehow /co/ manages to have a good amount of discussions about their topics, /a/ is the same as /v/ and /tv/, etc.
At least here you can discuss something without being accused of shilling off the bat. Or not 20 threads about how shit a trailer for some new thing is.
Everything is pretty established at this point. If you really thing /vr/ has the SAME or more than other boards I don't know what you've been up to.
It has tomes of power, fuck Hexen for not having them. Also much better level design, music and final boss.
>>3237112
Your opinions are shit. Hexen is far different to heretic. Heretic is literally just fantasy doom.
Hexen was an entire new world, with real character. The hub system and insane puzzles were hexens "charm" something few games do: totally fuck the player in the ass with puzzles and mazes. It was glorious, and korax enjoyed every minute of it
boring
>>3237308
no need to be rude about it.
>just fantasy doom
yeah that';s whay its good bozo. that's not a put down at all.
yeah maybe you like solving silly finding and pushing buttons for hours on endwith no direction but i prefer action gameplay. dont see how it has more world charm than heretic? just give me a corvis and a magic crossbow hun
>>3238679
Fantasy doom is a put down in my books: Linear, boring, samey, mindless killing with no intrigue or story.
I've always preferred games with atmosphere and purpose over games with endless arcade killing for no reason
>>3237131

I loved it! and now i am replaying it with the BrutalhereticRPG mod, loving it so far, i really like the new and more challenging AI and RPG elements that where introduced

It's a better Doom 2 than the actual Doom 2.
Vast, mysterious, daunting, with tough boss fights and nearly fifty levels. Some players might be disappointed that the weapons are basically just reskinned Doom weapons, but the inventory system adds a new dimension of gameplay (especially in deathmatch), and overall it's a worthy spiritual successor to Doom.
>>3241452
I agree 100%
>>3239105
>heretic
>linear
the levels are so open and the level design is really good, everything is linear to some extent
Unlike Doom the weapons feel really weak for some reason. Or is it the enemies that are much tougher?
>>3243319
Tougher enemies and highly randomised damage output make weapons feel less predictable, reliable and powerful.
>>3243341
>randomised damage output
what?
I want the Hexen license. Too bad it's in the storage room forever.
>>3237183
what version is this? I don't remember the HUD looking like that
>>3243319
The audiovisual output is less. When you shoot a Sergeant in Doom with a shotgun, you know it fucking hurts. Nothing in Heretic really gives off that sense of power.
>>3235775
Heretic > Doom > Hexen
>>3237112
who were you quoting in that last line there? i sure never said that...
>>3242794
>>3242808
Heretic and doom are preeeetty linear compared to hexen
Gee, sorry if I want some kind of reason for killing my way though endless hordes. I dont subscribe to Carmack's idea of what story should be in computer games, personally i like it when they put in a little effort beyond "here's the world, go nuts" and some notes in the manual.
One of the best FPS games ever released,
Extremely close second to Doom.
>>3244226
but heretic has a story. lore too
>>3244675
this to be honest.
highly underrated.I actually like it more than Doom.
>what does /vr/ think of heretic?
it's pretty cash
>>3243375
All doom engine games, by default, apply a randomization to damage dealt, like 3*random(3,8).
Ever notice an imp might take a couple more or less pistol shots to kill in Doom? That's why.
>>3245981
Heretic applies a much wider spread to damage than Doom does, resulting in generally lower damage results.
>>3235775
Both Heretic and Hexen are 10/10 games. Real shame that Hecatomb was never released and instead Activision made Raven pump out Hexen 2 and Heretic 2 instead.

They seemed to nerf the weapons in Heretic in order to make the Tome of Power more useful.
Hexen proved they could make good weapons without the bullshit.
>>3246172
Hexen's arsenal is phenomenal.
>>3246054
Look anon, I sympathize, but there aren't a lot of good fanmade fantasy weapons to make proper Heretic weapons mods with.
http://realm667.com/index.php/en/armory-mainmenu-157-97317/heretic-hexen-style-mainmenu-159-20295
Some of these are pretty good, like the Cult of Serpent Staff and Impaler Crossbow, but not stylistically consistent. Others are just plain sloppy like those blurry angled bolts on the Super Crossbow. You'd be pretty hard pressed to make a six- or seven-weapon mod out of them. Lots of wands, but not much variety otherwise.
The only good Heretic weapons mod I can think of was Wildweasel's 'Heretic Stylemod', which is a mutator (it references IWAD graphics and patches them together to make 'new' ones). That mod was the tits; worth playing for the Superballer and Chickenstaff alone. Problem is, it's broken on modern ZDoom; the roguelike randomized potion system doesn't work correctly.
Other than that, there's 'War of the Sidhe', but I can't recommend thatmostly because I made it.
If you could give the Hexen classes 1 additional weapon, what would you give them?
>>3240072
I really want to play this but I have no idea what to do with the .pk3 file
Hi, what does /vr/ think about the Shenmue serie ?
>>3237131
yes if /vr/ stood for very retarded
>>3235775
better level design than most doom levels, better expansion episodes than thy flesh consumed, more enemy variety.
Generally uglier, with shittier sounds and and shitty doom clone weapons that are worse in every way.
>>3244705
I didn't notice it during gameplay.
All I want is a couple of lines.
GREETINGS MORTAL
ARE YOU READY TO DIE?
that's literally all I need. It aint much
>>3246213
>Baratus/Fighter
Rechargeable enchanted dagger that spews white light and pain. Requires no ammo but takes time to recharge. When at full charge, does plenty of damage, but after 1 shot it becomes much weaker, and continues to fire weakly until you give it time to recharge.
Pretty much Aelf's Dagger from Realms of the Haunting
>Parias/Cleric
Flintlock Musket - Takes quite a bit of time to reload, but can deliver a fatal blow to most lower enemies, and punch through centaur armor
>Daedolon/Mage
Entangle spell - covers an area with dense living foliage, causing enemies to slow to a halt. Lasts for a bit, kind of like the clerics flechette. It would deal minor damage, but more of a control spell than a damage dealer.
Is there any mod that recolours the enemies in Heretic/Hexen? Hated how completely separate enemies shared sprites.
Nothing worse than trying to melee a centaur and then realizing it's actually a slaughtaur
>>3246213
I'd rather redesign/add more than one weapon, after playing through vanilla and then with hexercise, 4 weapons is just not enough, just one extra weapon realy help that, and Parias really feels odd, he's supposed to be a priest, but Serpent Stuff looks more like a pagan cultist weapon and his firestorm looks more appropriate for Daedolon.
It's my favorite 3D shooter game, on par with Doom 1.
I'm not that much a fan of Doom 2 or its derivatives.
Hexen was nice, but the puzzles could get aggrevating sometimes. Just too much ground to cover while looking for a hidden switch or key.
pretty bad, really, inventory system was bad but necessary to make the boring combat work at all, audio-visuals were uninspired, levels were meh
>>3235775
Good but not fantastic. I liked the setting, music and level design but enemies look kind of uninspired and it made you rely on Tomes fo Power to feel powerful, otherwise your weapons just felt rather weak. I prefer it over Hexen though, fuck that game and it's endless switch hunts which caused something to happen elsewhere but you don't know what so you scour all the areas trying to find out what changed.
