Redpill me on the Neo Geo, /vr/. Is it worth collecting for if you aren't an FGCfag?
>>
>>3225557
This is such a stupid question, even overlooking the retarded vocabulary. So you're just going to start buying tens of thousands of dollars worth of hardware and software because of the responses on /vr/? Do it, I dare you.
>>
>>3225557
Not really, emulation is very good and the good games are mostly posted to other systems. It's a very expensive console to collect for (relatively)

The Neo Geo is, first and foremost, an arcade system. The arcade version is known as the MVS (Multi Video System).

The console version was called the AES (Advanced Entertainment System). It was primarily made for hotels and other commercial uses. It was marketed as a home console, but it realistically wasn't meant for the home. Prices on AES games and consoles have remained high due to rarity.

If you want to collect for the Neo Geo, it's highly advisable to get either an MVS arcade cabinet, or a "consolized" MVS system modified to be played on a TV. MVS cartridges are a fraction of the price of AES carts because they're more common.
>>
>>3225587
Get a CMVS (consolized MVS) and a multicart, and you'll be pretty much set (if you don't mind the multicart)
>>

>>
>>3225557
>if you aren't an FGCfag
If you are "FGCfag" fighting games, you should use fightcade or play actually relevant alive games instead.
>>
>>3225648
People in the FGC don't play Garou or KoF98 anymore?
>>
>>3225557
If you hate money, collecting Neo Geo AES is the way to go.
>>
>>3225663
Some of them do, but usually people playing /vr/ fighting games are "arcade/SNK/Capcom/general fighting" fans or collectors, not "FGC" in competitive sense.
>>
>>3225557
If you don't like fighting games, the Neo Geo is about as useful for you as a toaster is to someone that's allergic to wheat.
>>
But what about Windjammers?

mvs pcb - $50
muli cart off alixpress - $50
jamma harness - $10-20 (don't really need this you could solder straight to the finger)
av/controller ports, wire, resistors, caps etc ~ $30
wood/plastic/glass housing for pcb ~ $0-40
controller you wire up yourself out of sanwa parts ~$60
Powersupply - $30 at most

So about $300 and most of those parts you can do cheaper or you already have. More time than anything else.

what about a neo geo cd or cdz? the load times don't seem so bad when you are used to 4th and 5th gen optical drive speeds. and the can be found for $150-250

No copy protection is tempting.
>>
>>3232652
also has native s-video output. I'm gonna buy one.

CDZ, top load or front load? Time for some research.
>>
>>3232652
I've got a CD. Well, three of them. Probably the best option if you're poor and want to play on original hardware.
There is copy protection but unprotected images are easy enough to find.
>>
>>3232787
I was just reading about that, some of the library right? also games are really cheap outside of the heavy hitters.
Front load seems like more of a headache
Top load is slow but seems to have the highest rate of working consoles being sold. 1/2 the cdz I am finding are non functioning.

Any tips for a newfag buying a ncd and games?

Already read up on the 3 way region switch and downloaded a jap to english menu map.
Is there a way to switch bios or something on ncd and convert the menu on Ntsc-j to ntscu?
>>

I assume he means an MVS/AES converter. I haven't priced them but the first two prices I saw from google looked ridiculous. Depending on space, someone interested in NeoGeo might consider just getting an actual arcade cab and MVS motherboard. Not sure what prices are like today, but I got a Neo Candy locally for $450 or so a few years ago.

Or, if that fails, consolizing an MVS motherboard is another option.

Sure first MVS I have ever converted, it's an mvs fz1 board. Made the box out of wood leaving just enough room to remove carts. The PCB feet are glued with liquid nails to the base so I can just unscrew the PCB if I need to remove it. The lid is a piece of dark glass that sits on studs on the inside walls cont.

Cont. I used a jams harness. I left most of the wire loose as cutting it to length then having to take it apart again would have been a pain. Wired up the controller dins with the corresponding jamma inputs as well as the colour signals and the sync. I wired them up through separate RCA jacks but if I did it again I would just have used a scart jack for everything. The most complicated bit was the sound as the mono sound requires 12v and I only wanted to use 5v. I found a 5v stereo amp bypass mod for my particular board and followed that so my l and r audio doesn't come through the jamma but straight off the board. I power it with a 5v adapter I bought from jaycar because I didn't want to lug around a PC PSU with it.

>>3241593
Cont. There are studs on the base of the unit to keep it off the ground if I'd thought ahead I would have drilled in ventilation holes on the bottom but it doesn't get very hot. There are 75hz resistors on each colour output otherwise they look washed out on some monitors, especially the xrgb mini. I don't have neo geo controllers and didn't really want more sitting around so I bought neo geo to ps1/2 converters and used the ps1 arcade sticks I had. You could easily make your own though as they are the old style and don't require a controller PCB. Pic is the back panel. I added the svideo jack because I was going to add a signal converter but never did/will because I use rgb exclusively nowadays anyway.

If I could give you any advice it would be decide if you want a uni BIOS or not as some motherboards are a bitch to use it with (try desoldering a 32 pin chip and wiring each pin to individually because they don't match up, not pretty). Also I don't know bit I would imagine an upright cartridge slot would be easier to design a compact unit for. I myself want to make a really compact one for the C1 slot main board. Good luck anyway.

How about the power supply I can power everything up with just 5v after that mod?, could give more details?.

Also, I can see you are getting the output right from the jamma right into your framemeister right?, so no superguns or anything.
>>
>>3242790
With that particular board model and some others the voltages other than 5v are only used to power the sound. By bypassing the on board amp and rerouting the signal through a diy amp you can use 5v to power everything. I'm using a 5v 3a adapter but different boards have different requirements. Check the service manual of the board revision to check voltage.

About the rgb - you need to have grounded jacks for whatever standard you are using. I have RCA jacks on mine but it might be easier to use a scart jack. So mine goes - colour signals and sync off the board finger - through the jamma harness - 4 RCA jacks at the back both grounded and with a 75hz resister on them - cables and adapters - pvm monitor/frame Meister

The vast majority of that community would welcome a MVS/AES flashcart. To be fair though, neo-geo.com does have some of the most ridiculous incidents in video game collecting history. (ex: NeoGeoFreak, fake Aero Fighters 3)

The main reason why Neo Geo doesn't have a good flashcart yet is because of how expensive it is to manufacture to support all the different chipsets NG games can have, and the most talented creator of flashcarts(Krikzz) isn't interested in making one at the moment.

Seeing as how there are people posting their consolised MVS' in this thread, it seems appropriate to ask my question here.

I've just bought a MVS cabinet. It had a four slot MVS board inside of it. When I turn the system on, I get a blue screen and some slight graphical junk on the left hand side. With the MVS disconnected from the Jamma harness the monitor is just black which indicates that it's not a moniter or jamma issue, the problem is most likely to lie in the MVS board itself.

The previous owner told me that he had it "looked at professionally" and said it's a RAM issue.

I really don't know. Kinda tempted to just throw a computer in there if I can't get this board working.
