Why PS1 is any different, functionally, than the PS2. Or the Nintendo 64 is any different than the Gamecube.

Can some retro gamer explain this?

It honestly isn't. If you have a PS2 you can run like 99% of the PS1 library and most of what you can't run isn't very good anyways.

Renting video games from the tape store.

Your mom/dad losing their patience as you can't decide on which game to rent.

Super Mario 3 is still checked out.

Do you settle for the copy of Super Mario 2? Or gamble on the latest game to hit the shelves?

Choose wisely. Your whole weekend depends on it.

I agree. It would be interesting if a big budget game was made in low detail, flat shaded, and the budget is devoted to more content. A large team could model the whole planet like that for a few million, I reckon. Maybe I should start playing Roblox.

Games have lost their mystique. A new release will be pretty thoroughly picked apart within a week or so nowadays, whereas old games had plenty of rumors floating around about what you could or couldn't do, like playing as Luigi in SM64, finding the unicorn fountain in OoT, and unlocking all the various "secret" Mortal Kombat characters that may or may not exist. The last big game rumor I remember was shooting all the names at the end of Melee to unlock Toad; after that pretty much everything was disproven by a quick Google search.

I know GameTrailers had a series called Pop Fiction where they took a look back at the origin of some of these mysteries and figured out if there was any truth to them. It was pretty interesting, even if you know how most of them would end already.

They now charge lots of money to pack your game in a big box and call it a "special edition".

Using RF connections.

Maintaining cartridges and sometimes taking the extra effort to clean them properly to get them to work

Going up to a counter and getting your game from some guy in a booth like in Toys R Us back in the 80s/early 90s

Having no fucking clue what games were good.. mostly going by word of mouth or hype in game mags. You had to rent the game in nost cases. Everyone knew, even most kids that most game reviews were awful payola trash and not to be trusted.

The allure of arcades back then was exciting. I remember always going to seaside heights NJ on the boardwalk and they had tons of arcades there. I'd always come across some new high tech arcade game and come home bewildered. Now, everything can be found with a google search so it doesn't really matter.

Non online multiplayer

>tfw no splitscreen
>tfw a lot of the time games that could easily have a single machine multiplayer require you to play via the internet

>racing game
>online racing only!!
>w-what

What's the point in a console if it's just going to work the same way as a computer? I don't think I'll ever buy a post ps3 console now. Computers price/performance and game releases have caught up. The lack of single console multiplayer has destroyed the point for me.

Online multiplayer just isn't comfy compared to being in the same room as someone and playing it with them.

Also since going wireless and adding a bunch of unnecessary shit they've really cut down on third party controllers. That's both a blessing and a curse. Some third party controllers were top of the line.

>Name ten still in operation.

In the fucking 90s there weren't even fucking 10 chains you moron. There was primarily Blockbuster and Hollywood Video.

Family Video is huge, it's not fucking dead.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_Video

In 2013, following the continued decline of competing video rental stores, Family Video formed a partnership with Marco's Pizza providing space for the franchise in many of its stores. The company is using the partnership as a way to deliver video rentals with pizza orders. Family Video also leases space to other retailers such as hair salons and fitness centers.[9][10] Unlike much of its competition, Family Video owns the real estate housing their stores, helping them to avoid unsuccessful lease negotiations that led to the demise of Blockbuster and Hollywood Video.[11] In addition, it owns a fiber-optic network in the Central Illinois region, called iTV-3,[12] as well as a small chain of fitness centers named StayFit-24.
