Games that are enjoyed best in top down/sidescroller and will never have the same charm in 3D
I think the sonic series is a good example of sidescrolling gottagofast was the best format and moving in to 3D lost any charm it had

Sonic is a very simple to control and understand game, I would argue the whole point of the game how accessible it is. So trying to work in 3D movement is inherently opposed to Sonic's philosophy.

I think a Castlevania in the vein of Metroid Prime could work. Or I could be completely wrong as I didn't enjoy or play much of any Castlevanias after Simon's Quest. Also, making a whip fun to play with in first person would be a novel accomplishment.
