Heretic was an amazing FPS. I'd even say it's on par with Doom in a lot of ways.
Heretic is ambitious and had a kickass concept, but fell short in execution. Classic case of eyes bigger than the stomach.
Hexen 2 tried to fix the predecessor but repeated the same mistakes less the charm of the original.

Hexen was always a favorite. people complain about the puzzles, but except for 1 or 2 times the switch hunting didn't bother me. I liked the hub system and the atmosphere was excellent.
two problems:
1. centaurs are too tedious to fight. the basic design is fine but they should hold up their shield for a shorter length of time.
2. it should've had more enemy variety.

have you tried the Necrosis mod for hexen? It addresses both of those issues, and is really high quality and fun! The classes get a re-jig too and few new weapons
Definitely heretic. Basically doom but with magic, with more enemy variety, and better non-freeware episodes (2 and 3) and better expansion episodes (4 and 5)
Seriously shadow of serpent riders shits all over they flesh consumed.
Some downsides are less mod/wad support than doom, less interesting textures and themes, and the doom knock-off weapons that look, feel, and sound like dogshit.
Thankfully I just discovered Wrath of Magic, which fixes the weapons issue. Makes the game so much more fun without actually altering gameplay.

Heretic had an absolutely excellent soundtrack, basically a moody MIDI fantasy equivalent of DOOM, and the artwork didn't fall short at all. Only bad thing was that half the enemies where designed like shit. Excellent final boss tho'
Hexen goes even higher on terms of atmosphere but falls even shorter in terms of enemies. Combat at the same time feels empty in many aspects, though it had some redeeming qualities. In consequence, hub 3 felt very boring due to repetition.

What exactly about hub 3 felt any more monotonous than the others? As far as enemies goes it introduces a new main enemy type, the Dark Bishop, and throws Slaughtaurs into the mix; which is arguably the second most dangerous enemy in the game after Wendigos.

the 2 hub, albeit pretty, was pretty boring combat wise.
By the time I reached the third i was pretty tired of the enemies and the combat, and to top didn't like the hub levels at all.
The fourth looked better for me, and i can't think about the fifth without thinking how fucking retarded korax looked. way to ruin the hype m8s
I loved how each of the three games had various equivalents to one another.

This is offset by your weapons hitting like trucks. And every class has easy ways of dealing with even the most annoying foes, ie Centaurs.
