I want to say the only reason Metal slug wasnt more popular was because Contra was made more accessible. As a pup I immediately recognized the difference between the two and would have killed to have a neo geo
Both are classics. Contra will always be more fondly remembered by most because of its earlier mass market appeal. I just always enjoyed Metal Slug a bit more I guess due to the humor and art being top-notch. That sprite work is still fucking incredible.

This, really. I love both of these a hell of a lot. Metal Slug 3 was a blast to play at the arcade. Contra 3 was the second game I ever played on the SNES and it blew my head off at the intro.

This isn't about which one is "more important", it's about which one you like to play more.
I do like Contra, and I think that the Contra games on NES, SNES, and Genesis are some of the best on those respective systems. However, when it comes down to it, I prefer the gameplay of Metal Slug overall. The only weakness I find in Metal Slug is the inability to shoot diagonally.

SNK said they're revisiting it soon but I don't really have any expectations seeing how 4-7 turned out.
Metal slug is the obvious choice, it has arguably a better everything then contra being the later game and an arcade game. Still both are eternal classics and should be played by everyone.

Not sure if I'd consider it as my *absolute* favorite arcade game but it's definitely up there. Presentation-wise, it's incredibly badass, and the level design even to this day is quite unique and very fun to play once you get used to the odd physics.
Actually, just going by platformers, it totally would be my favorite game of the 80's.

This opinion can only be held by people how played just 1-2 titles from each franchise and nothing else. Metal Slug just have 3 good titles, and they all play the same. Contra have many more good entries, and more varied too.

It has 3 phenomenal entries and 2 mediocre entries. Contra is the same really, 1-3 being incredible games while Shattered Soldier and 4 are just decent. At least metal slug has more variety though, which is why I enjoy that more. I have 1cc'd all the contras but 4 though.

It's less about "story" and more about "scenario." Contra's scenario doesn't have anything interesting happening in it, it's just running through levels shooting guys. Metal Slug 3 tells a fun story as you play through the game without a single line of dialogue, and it adds to the excitement of playing it.
