It's that time motherfuckers. DQ up to VII to be discussed.

Best Game?

Best Protag?

Best Waifu?

Best Boss?

Best recruitable monster in V and VI?

I'm actually towards the end of DQV on the SNES right now myself, about to enter the Demon World. I should probably do some grinding because Bianca is underlevelled and underequipped, plus there are some more monsters I'm looking to recruit.

The answer to both is slime knight.
>>
>>3210519
>Best Game
Tie between V and II. V had a much more interesting story in my opinion because of how you follow this character from youth to old age. A lot of little things in that game really captured me for some odd reason. As for II I think it had the best challenge. I also really liked the character designs for some odd reason.
>Best Protag?
V's. VI's comes at a close second though just because he has a bare semblance of personality.
>Best Boss?
I'm really not sure. I really like every final boss in the games if that counts. All their designs/fights are cool.
>Best recruitable
Honestly >>3210525
All the slime anythings in DQ were really good companions.
>Best Waifu?
I think Debora is cute and a really good character but is only in the DS version so I guess she doesn't count.
Bianca is usually who I pick though on SNES.
>>
I always liked 3's protagonist, only because with the way I played it, he became a /ss/ pimp with all ara ara female party members.

Also I accept http://exhentai.org/g/225944/036dfb9432/ as canon.
>>
How big are the differences between the ports of V aside from graphics, sound and translation?
>>
>>3210589
Four party members
Deborah(DS only)
More recruitable monsters.
Some name changes

About it really.
>>
>>3210589
V's DS port adds the best waifu.
>>
>>3210589

The later versions of DQV add party chat, which adds a huge amount of characterization to the characters, because they react to pretty much everything: they have something to say after every NPC you talk to, every new location you enter, after every event, it's awesome.
>>
>>3210649
Do you still have to push a button for party chat? I kept forgetting that in 4.
>>
>>3210649
Does that happen with each of the monsters too?
>>
>>3210525
Not in Dragon Quest VI, no sir.
The Slime Knight is a good recruitable monster because it's compatible with human equipments and has healing spells, but in Dragon Quest VI anyone can learn healing spells, plus Lizzie is also compatible with human equipments, and has ridiculous stats.
Lizzie is better than all your heroes in everything, HP, MP, attack, defense, agility, wisdom, plus she already comes with one of the secret classes unlocked, she's absolutely broken.

I'd also argue that the King Cureslime is the best DQ V monster, but that's for a different reason.

Is reclassing in 3 really necessary?

I'm right before Necrogond and even though I can beat them many monsters like the troll can oneshot my priest/wizard with its critical hit and if I got ambushed by the blizzard spamming clouds I'm basically fucked. I'm not really sure if I should grind/reclass or just push through.

SNES ver btw
>>
>>3211105
>Is reclassing in 3 really necessary?
I played 3 for the first time on GBC recently and reclassing felt pretty optional.
If you're doing something like two melee + caster, you might as well make the caster a sage to get all the spells.
>>
>>3211146
Yeah, currently the only thing in my mind is just making my wizard/priest a sage. I'm not sure how to reclass my soldier, maybe I shouldn't. Thanks.
>>
>>3211105
No, in fact most players I know will only reclass one of their characters to sage.

Fighters don't earn any MP and have pathetic wisdom, mages turned into fighters have weak spells, and priests turned into fighters don't have MP enough to be reliable.
On the other hand mages and priests don't have acess to strong equipments, so if you turn a fighter into a spellcaster, they will still remain pretty weak anyway.

Turning a fighter into a fighter (martial artist/warrior) also isn't necessary, because they will already hit the stats cap without reclassing.
Also turning a mage into a priest or a priest into a mage is a waste, because the sage has acess to better equipments, so you may as well just get a sage.

tl;dr just get one or two sages

It's real sweet is my opinion, but I never played the PSX original. The characters are fun and the game just goes on and on, but it works well thanks to its episodic structure. You go to some new place, end up in the middle of a tragedy and do your best to resolve the situation, then later get to see how it all turned out. The writing is pretty clever making you care about each location, its residents and their stories, and if you enjoy that stuff there's just so much of it.

Serious contender for favorite RPG for me, it's at the very least within top 3.

The retcon came from Kenshin Dragon Quest, which was something of a prototype Dragon Quest Swords (pic related is what you play the game with), and was released only in Japan. The game is basically a retelling of the original Dragon Quest, and they gave Erdrick's Descendant a new look for it, that has been used subsequently in many other games, including Monster Battle Road I and II, which is what OP's picture is.

Some cursed equipment is rather worth it, though. Hela's Hammer, at least in IV (dunno about the other games) is a crit-or-miss weapon, which makes it the perfect weapon for metal slime hunting. Even going with just Sofia, I've done grinding in Zenithia Tower in the room that spawns a shitload of Metal King Slimes in the DS version (forgot if it does so in the NES version too) and gotten Sofia up to Lv. 99 no sweat with that thing.

>>
>>3223135
Helmet is the right answer.

The armor is a waste, everyone that can equip it can also equip a stronger armor that you can just buy in the shop of the next town.

Shield isn't useless, but it's very underrelming. Assuming you will give the 2 Metal King Shield to Mireyu/Milly and Chamoro/Nevan, then all the other characters that would benefit from the shield can also equip the Ogre Shield+, that you can buy as much as you want and is just as strong.

The helmet on the other hand is the best helmet Chamoro/Nevan can equip, simple as that.
>>
>>3221895
IV is a great one on the DS as well, just saying. The bonus content in Chapter 6 is an awful lot of fun.

>>3230401
The only thing about it that I'm not fond of is that they left out the Party Chat in the US version. The translations actually don't bother me at all, even if the accents are kind of silly. I can't speak for the NotRussian bunch (huehuehue), but thinks like how Ragnar and Taloon speak? They're actually pretty well-done, for whatever that means to a phonetic accent.

I mean, read this, and tell me that Ragnar wouldn't talk like that.

>DS changes it to Falcon Blade

...Well, it's definitely not a bad thing to have, like, at all, but you can only really get much of a chance to use it if you get all the tokens you need in Chapter 2 (easiest way is with the monster arena, since the monsters in the arena are very predictable at this point, what with the bestiary being so small) and wait until you come back with the Hero in Chapter 5.
>>
>>3230459
In Persona 1, I broke the game wide open by getting the number guessing thing on my first try.
>>
>>3230484
By 'abusing saves' he means savestates, so no not tedious. It's like 3 minutes of work in some games. Take poker in 7: Win a single hand, savescum, double or nothing, reload if you get nothing, double or nothing again, and again and again and again. Basically as far as the game is concerned you one a single hand of cards and broke the bank with lucky choices.

>Best Game?
Having played all the ones released in the west, I would say Dragon Quest VIII. Though if the remake of Dragon Quest VII on 3DS is as good as it sounds, that may overtake it.

>Best Protag?
Probably the hero from DQV just because he had such a hard life but kept going. Though from a story standpoint, I prefer the way they handled the hero in DQVIII. Making him effectively a tag along until the post game, where we learn there was a purpose to him being on the team. Its kind of the best of both types.

>Best Waifu?
Bianca since I played a version without the hick accent.

>Best Boss?
My favorite is probably fighting the multiple guys in the Arena with Alena.

>Best recruitable monster in V and VI?
In terms of strength and versatility, Great Dragon or King Cureslime. But you only get slimes in DQVI so in that game, its Slime Knight, since he can do both the slimopolous and costume contest.

Ragnar doesn't come from Scotland. Its just a simple matter of suspension of disbelief. As well as realizing the original Japanese didn't have the accents.

Yuji Horii announced DQVII and VIII for 3DS were getting localized, before SquareEnix announced it. He also let slip that Dragon Quest XI is going to be on the Nintendo NX, which SquareEnix quickly covered up. But as far as I know, he didn't hint that DQXI was going to be localized.

I am hoping that the increase in recent DQ releases will mean we're returning to the PS2/DS days, where we got more constant releases. The current head of SquareEnix of Japan seems to be moving away from focusing on Final Fantasy and more towards releasing all games to the west. But it remains to be seen if that actually happens. The politics in SquareEnix are so mind boggling that we can never predict what they'll do. And even a secondary localization manager seems to be able to usurp the wishes of the CEO of the company.

Slime MoriMori Dragon Quest 3: Taikaizoku to Shippo Dan - $40
Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland Remake - $40
Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Remake - $40

Final Fantasy XIV: ARR - $42
Final Fantasy XIV - Heavensward: $30

>I am hoping that the increase in recent DQ releases will mean we're returning to the PS2/DS days, where we got more constant releases. The current head of SquareEnix of Japan seems to be moving away from focusing on Final Fantasy and more towards releasing all games to the west. But it remains to be seen if that actually happens. The politics in SquareEnix are so mind boggling that we can never predict what they'll do. And even a secondary localization manager seems to be able to usurp the wishes of the CEO of the company.

Since we're getting stuff even more-niche stuff like Romancing SaGa 2 and I Am Setsuna now, I'm pretty confident we'll get DQXI. I don't expect us to get DQMJ3 though.

Not in the Famicom and Super Famicom versions
but in the Game Boy Color version changing classes
is necessary due to a super hidden hard boss called Divine
Dragon which can give you the Rubyss Sword (the most powerful weapon in the game), beating the boss even requires you to drop the main hero in favor of a better warrior mostly because the hero
can not change classes. Divine Dragon is like pic related but golden.

>>3217352
10/10 taste.
>>
>>3243007
yeah, the patch adds them. First glitch is in the above pic. If you talk to that clone Prince he replaces your Prince with his HP and MP stats set back to level 1, though you keep the other stats the same. Wouldn't actually be much of a problem except that it also makes you lose the Princess, and she can't be replaced because the Mirror is gone.

The other glitch is if you rest in the town where the Prince gets sick. When you bring the Leaf to heal him it starts and endless text loop. This one can be bypassed by temporarily playing your save file on an unpatched rom to get through that part.

I think I've heard another NPC causes an endless text loop too but I don't know the exact details.

The most drastic change is in the class system. Basic skills can be retained and carried over when you change, but advanced ones cannot. Also, what skills you have in a class depends on what other class skills you've learned. Also monster classes teach advanced skills of other classes that can be carried over.

It's a pretty complicated affair, but basically it means you can't go all powerful. It's doable, but not as easily as in PS1.

I hope we get the mobile version too, I don't have a 3DS.

>>
>>3248526
Balzack/Ballsack in Chapter IV for Dragon Quest IV was always a problem for me, but not a huge one, it was mostly as a kid that he was too difficult for me to beat. His second form in Chapter V is a total chump once you have someone in your party with Fullheal. Hell, even doing a solo run with Sofia, I stomped him pretty handily when that spell came into play. The only other bosses that were trouble for me going solo were Psaro (mostly during the phase where he casts a bunch of spells, because he'd nailed me twice with Whack), Foo Yung and Chow Mein, and Aamon on the DS version. The last one there I had to grind up to level 99 to be able to beat him, because when he put me to sleep, I had to be at full health (over 900 HP) to survive the onslaught until the sleep was done.

Empyrea and Captain Crow usually gave me some trouble in VIII, and Dhoulmagus' second form was only hard if you weren't set up right.

There's two trilogies - 1-3 and 4-6. You get the most out of them if you go in order, but it doesn't matter which trilogy you do first, or if you do any of the other ones.

So, skipping to 8 would be just fine, and if you just did 3 that's actually optimal because references. Do 4-6 in order when you do get to those ones. Or don't, I'm not your mom.

The glitch with the prince occurs because of his name. His name is randomly chosen from a set based on the name you enter for the main hero. However, it has a high chance of being "Rolondo" which is 7 characters. DQII on the SNES was built with 6 characters max in mind. This extra character fucks up a lot of things later on.

There are two ways to get around this glitch.

1. Rename the prince to something shorter. Go to the file select screen, pick out your file, then hold Left + Start, and press A, and you should have a naming prompt.

2. Play the GBC version. It's based off of the SNES version and it's portable and quite good.

How's this for a class setup on DQVI?

Hero : Gladiator>Hero
Carver: Gladiator, Ranger
Milly: Luminary
Ashllyn: Sage, Armamentalist
Nevan: Sage, Paladin
Amos: Gladiator
Terry: Just stick with his gladiator class

Goowain: Paladin
Lizzie: Dragon, Gladiator

Not sure what to build the other slimes as.
>>
>>3260913
Personally here's how I like it.
First, give everyone 1 rank in both priest and mage the moment you unlock the abbey so everyone has an 80 damage magic attack and heal. Optional: give everyone 1 rank in dancer so they can stop a foe for one turn if they're not being useful otherwise.
Oh, and once you get Amos say goodbye to having Ashlynn or Nevan in your main party ever again since they're so weak. Give the ghent staff to whoever you want healing (i.e. whoever is doing the least damage/buffing) and don't feel constrained by classes since without grinding you won't get multiheal/hustle dance until late game anyway and fullheal isn't needed until then either. Personally though I made Hero a sage because magic is strong early on and kazing on the only person brought back after a wipe is godly. I made Amos a ranger, later replaced him with Healie who I also made a ranger. Fun fact: Call to Arms is fucking awesome assuming the foe doesn't resist summons. Carver was a monk and from there you can go wither paladin or gladiator, do note that going gladiator you'll get hatchet man along the way for metal slimes and paladin gets a hit-all attack earlier (thin air vs boulder toss). Milly, Ashlynn and Nevan were all also made sages because if you aren't gonna attack physically then at least sit back as an MP pool for out of battle healing, or in battle in Milly's case. You could make her a luminary and get hustle dance instead of waiting for multiheal on a sage, it would also make your team look more balanced what with sage hero. Ashlynn going sage serves a double purpose since you can switch her in and magic burst nuke a team off of high sage mp when you're desperate.
Terry sucks but looks cool just give him the sage's stone (win it at the fashion show) and have him either use that or his sunderbolt blade, or maybe just wind sickles. His class doesn't matter really, gladiator does have survivability though. Maybe go ranger with him too. Lizzie stronk as anything.
>>
>>3260913
The Dragon class does everything the Gladiator class does, but better, there's no reason to teach Lizzie it.

Training more than one slime may be a waste of time, but remember that you can't learn Omniheal through the class system, only Healie and Curie can learn it.

I'd have the Hero as Luminary and Milly as Sage, but your team will do the job, there isn't really an obvious best team like in FFV.

>Big Banga
Oh of course I forgot how before beating the game everyone has access to that and not you know getting oomphed and smacking the shit outta everything. And how before beating the game everyone should have metal king armor.
>>

I don't know what's your point anymore.
Initially you were trying to prove that Milly is better than Nevan because of her agility.

Then you complained about his offensive game, even though Milly isn't any stronger.
Then you complained about his equipments, even though Milly's equipments are worse.
Then you complained about the lack of acess to a skill, even though this applies to Milly too.
>>
>>3261374
Honestly I just think he's ugly like this guy said >>3261023 but don't want to admit it.

Also, if they're equal in bad attack and lack of a skill, and Nevan is competing with 2 others (3 if you count Lizzie) for good equipment until post-game post-scarcity, then shouldn't Millie's higher agility be the deciding factor?
>>
>>3261408
Well, even without equipments, Nevan's HP, MP, resilence, strength and wisdom are better. Not by much though.

I think he's better at the end of the game, but at mid game there are points were Milly is better, sure.
>>
>>3261456
Well, one other reason to have milly in the party in early midgame and not nevan, is because nevan has zing and if he dies then you're shilling out pre-post-scarcity gold to revive him, so you should keep him in reserve to revive everyone else. Assuming you don't just grind everyone to 8 priest immediately that is.

Any reason to have the hero as the Luminary?

You search the bookshelves and find "1001 monster jokes"

"What does a cureslime do with a skateboard?
A healflip!"

That's not Debora.

Actually, I just tested it out. Changing the name will fix the loop with the prince side-quest. However, the NPC in Rhone will still soft-lock you once you kill the final boss. Make a savestate.
>>
>>3261798
Luminary is like a weaker Sage that has costless spells.
Since lightning spells from the hero class are costy, I think it would be a good idea to have access to costless skills, so the Hero won't run out of MP too easily.

Maybe this isn't necessary at all and I just value healing power too much.
Since at the end of the day I just try to learn every single class with every character, I may not be qualified to tell for sure which class combination is the best.

>>3260982
>The Dragon class does everything the Gladiator class does, but better, there's no reason to teach Lizzie it.
Do learn Martial Artist though.

>>3262467
I'm not saying go all the way for martial arts, but wind sickles is invaluable.

Why stop before knuckle sandwich?

>>3262485
Because of the shitty hit rate. I have more hatchet-man hits than knuckle sandwich hits, possibly coincidence though.

So you can't recruit everything in the DQ6 DS remake, among other things.

Does this noticeably detract from the experience? What remakes are worth playing/worth avoiding?
