1. Castlevania
2. Goemon
3. Contra
4. Gradius

I admit I never really played any Rocket Knight game, but my 5th series would be TwinBee

You should check out RKA, it was by the same designer that made Contra. The half run 'n gun, half shmup formula is really cool. Sparkster on SNES ain't too shabby either, though he didn't make it.

I like a lot of Konami series but no one dares put Contra below any fucking game. Contra III is the best video game of all time. The levels, the weapons, the music, the characters. It's the perfect goddamn game.

And Splinter Cell did it better with its mandatory game-overs and fucking horrible shooting controls?

And Thief did it better with its abysmal AI?

And Morrowind did it be- nevermind.

Hardly any games do stealth right.

Tenchu was so awesome in this regard, like wow.

>>
>>3209381
The top-down stages in Contra III have shit controls, shit graphics, shit hit detection (don't walk exactly along the crumbling bridge? Too bad, you die!), and look terrible in co-op mode because the screen is squished. They simply are just not well designed. Nobody wants to go around a big map looking for targets to destroy.

Also, if you think Contra III is better than Hard Corps or the two NES games, you're fucking insane.

Gradius has probably been the most consistent. I can only think of one bad entry, and that was when Konami outsourced it to Treasure.

>>
>>3209496
Bruh, the turning with shoulder buttons is super easy. It takes like a couple playthroughs and it's easy. But yeah it does look pretty bad on co-op, I'll give you that.

Also I say that Contra III is better than the NES and Hard Corps. fite me
>>

Contra's pretty 50/50. On one hand you have good games like Hard Corps, Shattered Soldier, ReBirth, and Super C, but on the other hand you have crappy games like 4, Force, Legacy of War, and Adventure.

Castlevania
Contra
Gradius
Goemon
Rocket Knight

I only rank Rocket Knight that low because the sequels were just okay. The original Rocket Knight Adventures is my favorite game though.

>>

It has the best 2 player mode in any Gradius, anyway it's not retro, so let's stop talking about it.

The "no moai" guy is a recurrent shitposter who just wants to rile up shit. Moais are cool but ultimately not having them doesn't really change anything gameplay-wise. It has a lot of other classic Gradius enemies and bosses.

Not really a good thing. Freeze cheeses almost all the bosses in the game and Directional renders the stages too easy since you can aim anywhere. Rotate and the other one were already in previous Konami shmups.

I'd rather have more features than fewer, especially when you can choose not to use said feature if it doesn't suit your fancy.
>>
>>3210226
>especially when you can choose not to use said feature if it doesn't suit your fancy.
You have to use it if you want to play seriously for score, or else your score is going to suck compared to others.
>>
>>3210229
If everyone is using the feature then it doesn't matter if it makes the game easier, only the score matters. Use the features that you don't care for only when you're competing with other people's scores, and play without them when you just want to compete with your own scores.

Or hell, just play another game, I don't care. lol

Not him, but he's right. DDR and MGS are MORE POPULAR GAMES than Rocket Knight.

Just to be clear, I also played a lot of Rocket Knight back when it was new, but that doesn't mean that it's one of the "big" Konami series.
>>
>>3215701

MGS only became huge at the very end of the 90s, MGS is almost a non-retro series since all the other games in the franchise got released after 1999. The MSX games aren't popular and are only remembered because MGS series was a success, otherwise they'd be "hidden gems" confined on the MSX.
DDR (as well as Pump it up) were big in the arcades in the late 90s (but more like early 00s, actually).

Both franchises are big, but I think Rocket Knight is more representative of /vr/ Konami all in all. Everyone remembers Sparkster, whether you actually played the games, or saw it on magazines back then.

Regardless of what Konami does with the series currently, it will continue to be a legacy franchise and well remembered. It has left too big of an impression just to be summarily forgotten in a mere decade. Hell, people still talk about MGS 2 and that was 15 years ago.

MG got two versions of MG, two versions of MG2, and two versions of MGS, and more if we include Snatcher as part of the Metal Gear canon.

That's six+ games, enough to qualify as a Konami Iconic Retro Franchise.
