on tape games thread:

im really intrested to hear from anybody who recorded games onto tape from radio transmissioni was just a bit too young as i was born in 1981

kinda regained an enthusiasm for the old things
just been reading about a guy who is restoring old teletext pages from vhs.. the teletext was broadcast almost inpercevable on a tiny bit of empty bandwidth and recorded on the vhs tapes as a barcode on a few unused lines

theres some pretty good apps that emulate tape players so you can just play the sound into a computer (I use an MSX one but there's c64/bbc micro/spectrum ones ones too)

Why do Murkans go out of their way to defend their shite PCs like Crapple? When they tried selling the Apple II in Europe, it completely bombed.
>>
>>3206717
0/10
The most successful PCs are still American.
>>
What was wrong with the Apple II and how was it worse than the Sinclair Spectrum or other rubber shit?
>>
Didn't the Apple II not sell in Europe because it couldn't display color on PAL TVs?
>>
>>3206760
I think it did although price was a factor as well.
>>
>>3206687
>US$595 (roughly equivalent to $1,500 in 2015
Poor alright
>>
We had the Commodore 64/128 back in the 1980's. The separate 5 whatever floppy drive was best as a drink warmer.
We also had an Amiga and a VGA MS-DOS.
>>
>>3206792
There wasn't any VGA in the 80s except for IBM PS/2s at the very end of the decade.
>>
I had a C64 as a kid growing up in South Africa. I bought one again in Germany around 8 years ago but I haven't bothered setting it up yet. Can it just be plugged into an old tv?
>>
>>3206795
Eh, 1990 or 1991.
>>
>>
>>3206806
Yes but the RF output sucks; go on Ebay and get a composite cable.

Why is it so bleeding hard to not have one C64/Amiga thread that doesn't turn into America vs Europe shitposting?
>>
>>3206821
Look, I know you 90s shitbabbies will have a hard time mashing this into your dense skulls, but not all of us are under 21.
>>
>>3206809
What. We had disk drives in Germany. It was only Britpoors who seemed to have had problems with that.

How cute, it thinks being born the last week of December 1989 makes it an 80s child. Nah, you're another 90s shitbabby.

1978 mustard race here btw.

>>

IIRC the 1581 uses the same formatting as the Amiga, which is a hacked-up MFM not normally readable by PCs.
>>
>>3206860
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_1581

No, it's standard MFM.

He probably means a 1541-II.
>>
>>3206809
>>3206868
The 1581 uses MFM so it can be read on a PC with special software b/c different file system and 256 byte sectors. You also cannot use 1.44MB disks with it. The drive is not low-level compatible with the 1541 at all so it can only use software that runs off the standard CBM DOS file system. Hence most applications will run off a 1581 but games usually perform low-level disk access (aside from maybe Jumpman) and won't work.

Some Amigas can use 1.44MB disks because Commodore had several different drive suppliers and equipped some of them with HD drive mechanisms, but all 1581s used Matsushita drives which are pure DD and will require genuine 720k disks.

1581s also tend to cost too much on Ebay. They're not particular rare, but the demand for them among collectors is high.

Literally mfw back in the 1980's
>>
>>3207132
Quite often if you just let the tape play on it would load the next level.
>>

As a Dutchfag I don't know that Britbong feel. Feels good man.
>>
>>3206809
>>3207093
The 1541-II and 1571 are not 100% low level compatible with the original 1541 but AFAIK this is only a problem for some advanced copy protections all of which have been cracked by now anyway.
>>
>>3207108
Also you know, Jumpman had no copy protection yet it was still Epyx's best-selling game for years. If only game devs had learned that protecting software did not increase sales.

Actually a reasonable price.
>>
>>3206778
>>3206760
There was the Europlus model that could use a special card for PAL color. But even without it the Apple II was still far more expensive than its competitors.
>>
I always thought that Brits deliberately used the slower tape system because they could make a cup of tea while it was loading, is this true?
>>
>>3207568
Yeah the slowness was a feature.
>>
The last I ever saw of my childhood C64 was after my dad took it in to have it repaired. The computer repair guy in South Africa told him that the machines were now obsolete but that he could get some cash towards a more modern machine if he traded it in because they were sending all the old Commodores to Zimbabwe where they were still around 5 years behind South Africa.
>>
>>3208230

So mid-2000s, then?
>>
>>3208282
South Africa wasn't that far behind until 1993.
>>
>>3208282

No, 1980's. I was born in 76. In The 80's the South African Rand was 1-1 with the British £.

>yanktrash actually bragging about the shitty C64 discdrive

Why would we give a fuck about that when the far superior Amiga and Atari ST were on the market? That's akin to bragging about having a Sega CD while ignoring the Playstation and Saturn. Do you retards even think before you post?

The Commodore 64 + tape deck was a budget computer for CHILDREN while the adults were enjoying the 16bit hardware.
>>
>>3206717
Because the C64 and Amiga were both American-designed computers?
That were eventually crushed by IBM-compatibles, which are still American-designed?
>>
>>3209621
>yanktrash actually bragging about the shitty C64 discdrive

And Germany. And the Netherlands. And Sweden. And anywhere in Europe outside of Britpoorland also had disks on their Commodore 64s.

Why are Britpoors so smug about being the only cunt too poor to afford disks?
>>
>>3210182
>>3209621
Besides, even if you look at Britpoor Amiga games, it was still the same kiddie platformers as the C64 but with better audiovisuals.
>>
>>3209621

Why are brits so insecure about what Americans do? Why do they even care?
