What are some underrated retro composers?

For me it's Soyo Oka. She did Pilotwings, Super Mario Kart, Sim City and the updates to Super Mario All Stars.

My favorite by her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPcP8MRh8r4
>>
Game Boy best composer: Alberto Jose Gonzalez.

I mean, those that do know him actually rate him highly, but he still rather unknown, especially considering he is one of the best chiptune composers of all time.

there is this little known guy called yuzo koshiro

i think that somebody should make more use of him

Yes, I love Soyo Oka too.

Shame she only contributed to like 5-6 games.

Oh, and here's my favorite by her:

Weird how all versions on youtube cut out the intro.

Pilotwings and Sim City may just have the comfiest soundtracks ever. When I hear them, it's suddenly 1992 and I'm in my parents basement on a rainy Saturday morning playing Super Nintendo.
>>

Kazou Sawa despite being fantastic.
>>
>>3204242
Loved the Pilotwings Ost, especially the Jet pack stage with the overcast sky.

I feel the soundtrack of PW is severely underrated. By the way HALC from OC Remix covered it with a few other tracks a while ago. Should be easy to find it somewhere.

I found Jesper Kyd's Sega Genesis Adventures of Batman and Robin to be really unique as far as Genesis soundtracks go. He has the earliest instance of a 'drop' that is all too common in music these days that I can think of (0:17 in the video)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA2pCqpfAkM

He pushed that sound chip to it's absolute max in this game.

Sounds like garbage rave shit.
>>
>>3208561
Sounds like SoR 3. The first few seconds are highly reminiscent of Koshiro's Poets II.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwjZJ_tHnSk

The bass is also richer and deeper in SoR/BK3.
>>
>>3204242
Noriko Matsueda and Ryuji Sasai for sure.
>>
>>3204242
I was surprised how good the music was in this game the first time I played it.

Sim City in itself is a game I really didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did
>>
>>3208603
I can definitely hear the resemblance in that start. You're right about the bass too, although do each game use different sound chips?
>>
>>3204242
Do pinball games count? Brian Schmidt did some amazing work. The music from Black Knight 2000 is one of my favourite pieces. As an interesting bit of trivia, Steve Ritchie, the guy who voices the Black Knight, also did the voice of Shao Khan in MKII.

>Brian Schmidt
>underrated
>being this underage
>>
>>3204242
>she
huh, that is interesting, as you usually only hear about males when it comes to people involved in the Japanese game industry back then.
>>
>>3210230
oh god, what edge
>>
>>3210240
don't believe everything gaming journalists tell you

even today, there are talented women in the japanese games industry
>>
>>3210240
There were some fairly high profile female composers, like Manami Matsumae (Mega Man), Michiru Yamane (Castlevania), and Yoko Shimomura (Street Fighter II). I guess they're not household names like Koji Kondo, but they were out there.
>>
>>3204298
>>3204343
My favorites so far.
>>
>>3210240
>Yoko Shimomura

She's a big'un. After Kondo, Uematsu, Mitsuda, I feel like she's amongst the best known. Her KH stuff, especially.
>>
I like how In the SNES version of Sim City, the Village theme is a recurring motif in the other city themes.
>>
>>3210248
>someone corrected me
>I'll passive aggressively tell them that they're edgy
Brian Schmidt is well regarded

shut up kid
>>
>>3204242

SimCity soundtrack basically made that game.
>>
>>3210428
>Yoko Shimomura

I've got an arranged CD signed by her
>>
>>3210601
You know that was someone else, right? For the record, I'm 48 years old, and I'm the one who mentioned Brian Schmidt. Did it occur to you that someone else might also have found your response needlessly hostile and rude?

Incidentally, try stopping 100 random people on the street and ask if they know who Brian Schmidt is. Hell, stop 1000. Not one of them will have any idea who he is.

>Did it occur to you that someone else might also have found your response needlessly hostile and rude?
I've been here too long and I'm a complete social misfit

if it means anything I'm sorry

Yukio Nakajima this guy hasn't done much but the music for Energy Breaker is great
>>
>>3204343
Reminds me of the Turtles music.
>>
>>3204242
I love the music to SNES Sim City. Always have. Which is why I was blown away to hear one of the pieces re-worked for Link's Awakening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnjqnAPUsKY

Also, notice that this is Mr Write's theme, whereas in Sim City it's the music for the advisor, called Mr Wright.
>>
>>3208561
>Jesper Kyd
is he really underrated? granted, most of his scores are 2000 and later

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjeQ-jF0uao
>>
Neil Baldwin is NES' best.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l6nQzPh-iI
>>
Manfred Linzner. Why does nobody ever talk about him?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4IrkW4NSwE
>>
Probably not underrated but Yasunori Mitsuda. Most people only know him for Chrono Trigger and maybe Xenosaga.
>>
>>3204242
The Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time

Wow, another thread filled with a bunch of retards that don't understand the meaning of the word "underrated" but insist on using it anyway! What a shock.
>>
>>3204242

I've loved Soyo Oka ever since I bothered to look her up a few years ago. I was enthralled by Pilotwings and Sim City especially. The elevator music vibe. Didnt care for SMA all that much.

Neil D Voss is my GOAT though. Tetrisphere has a god tier soundtrack.
>>
>>3218537
I still blame her for breaking up the Beatles, though.

Holy shit I can't tell you how happy to know this, I fucking loved all of this music and I'd never heard of her.
