It's okay if you don't like arcade games, just don't spend your time convincing people who do that they're wrong.
>>

>highest failure rate of a console save for xbox 360
First I'm hearing of that. I'd say the fat PS2 was far more unreliable.

Anyway, homebrew scene. Dreamcast has it in spades.

>literally nothing true except the bits that are related to personal opinion

I like the Dreamcast because it seemed so bizarre when compared with the more orthodox consoles of the time. It's hard to explain exactly what I'm referring to but there's just this overall aura of strangeness to it. Maybe that is just Sega's experimental style that I'm sensing. Regardless, I find the Dreamcast unique.
>>
Dreamcast is an excellent console with many great games. It was loved by tons of people when it was released, especially real gamers since the casuals and moms were waiting for daddy sony's PS2. It's true a bunch of misguided people seem to go over the top sometimes, such as dreamcast being one of the best ever and so on (though I rarely hear that claim). But it's certainly up there as a good console, though with a short lifespan.
>>
>>3202630
The only console I've had that failed on me was Dreamcast, and I've owned 15+ systems.

Its PSU went out.
>>
>>3202557
Saturn was better.
>>
>>3202630
No way, I still have my original PS2 I got at launch and it works fine. Meanwhile the Xbox 360 I bought to play GTA IV (not a launch console) RRODed and I had to get it replaced

Yeah sure. That explains why I had numerous Xboxs break down, had a dreamcast breakdown etc.

PS2, NES, SNES, N64 are all tank machines. I've had my PS2 since launch.

Funny, I don't remember hipsters being a thing back in the early 2000's. Me and my weeb friends loved it for Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, MvC 2. Normalfags liked it for the sports and arcade ports.

I have a sinking suspicion you were VERY young around the Dreamcast's launch and thus, are full of shit and a 'Captain Contrarian' yourself.
>>
>>3202557
>75% of the library are sports games or shovelware
This describes every console ever made doesn't it
>>
>>3202668
It's mainly because Sega of America took an anything goes policy with the Dreamcast that was the polar opposite of their stance in the Saturn era. The Dreamcast got all kinds of wacky Japanese games localized for the west. There's never really been anything else like it.
>>
>>3202557
>75% of the library are sports games or shovelware
Only like 30 games max of the 250 or so US releases are sports games. A few shovelware games sure, just like every system ever, but generally the whole US library is full arcade perfect fighting/shmup ports, better ports of games like Rayman 2, Soul Reaver and Resident Evil 2/3 and wacky original Japanese games like Seaman and JSR. You have no idea what your talking about.
>>
>>3202789
>>3202785
I have two PS2s with disc reading problems (the problem of not being able to read PS2 CD format (blue disks) was widespread) and one that has a port that doesn't send rumble signals, which incidentally also doesn't light the glowy controllers. I do have one broken dreamcast that I bought broken with a lot of other consoles and this one looks like it's been through a flood. My other two dreamcasts work no probalo.

>>3202747
I think most say that it was one of the early innovator consoles rather than being the best. It had online capability with downloadable content, analog triggers on the controller, browser functionality, and the your-mileage-may-vary remote gaming VMU.
>>
>>3202883
Still, the Dreamcast is an arcade fan's dream since it was kind of like Sega's version of the Neo Geo. To this day, the DC has the best home versions of several games.

I've only known two people who owned a dreamcast, I don't know if they even failed on them. I've known at least a dozen friends with a fat PS2 fail on them for some reason or another. My PS2 I bought used, didn't die on me, but the sound went wonky and started clipping.
>>
>>3202927

I can't take "le fail rate" fags seriously at all because I actually take care of my machines and as a result they don't fall apart.
>>
>>3202940
Every single person I know whose ever owned just constantly threw the thing against the wall and dunked in acetone filled with cigarette ashes. We used to play baseball with them, as bases and bats. We ducktaped like six of them together as a bat and swung it by their power cords. Some of made protective gear and out of them and shot guns at eachother blocking them with the PS2s. They came in handy when I had to jack up my car and keep it balanced when replacing my rims. Still can't figure out why they stopped working though.

As a 24-year-old, The dreamcast was right in that youth age for kids to want their parents to get one. I know I had a friend with one at the time and I played Sonic Shuffle at his place. For him to come up with
>>only hipsters and captain contrarians liked it at the time
means that he either has to be significantly older or significantly younger.

>>3202895
To be fair, Maken X's saving grace is that it's novel but flawed, and Blue Stinger is a so-bad-it's-good game.

>>3202940
Drive failures and heat damage happen regardless of how you take care of your shit. Over time PS2 drives simply stopped reading CDs. Older model PS1s would overheat due to design and sometimes needed to be turned upside down to read properly. I actually own an SCPH-1001 that does just that, and it's in otherwise fine condition.
>>
>>3203067
>The dreamcast was right in that youth age for kids to want their parents to get one
You do realize that there are kids at exactly the age to want their parents to get a console for every console? Supposing that's what that garbled mess of a sentence is trying to suggest.

>Drive failures and heat damage happen regardless of how you take care of your shit.
NO. Only using them as ramps for monster truck derbies would cause a machine to fail. No manufacturer has ever created an electronics device that fails. Especially not Sony, who in no way had a reputation for hocking cheaply built crap. nor has the concept of MTBF ever existed outside consumer use. Nor do I work for Sony and they're definitely not paying me thirty five dollars and fifty cents for protecting their brand on this board today.
>>
>>3203067
I'd say Maken X's main flaw is its terrible localization... and like Resident Evil's it's so bad it gives the game a certain charm.

It's also kinda floaty when it comes to jumping and combat. Knocking back projectiles is nice but unsatisfyingly slow. The lock on system makes switching between multiple projectile enemies a tad cumbersome. The issues aren't huge, it's just that they're small but annoying.

That's why. The Saturn and Dreamcast were trying to save console gaming from the ultracasualization that happened in the mid-90s and failed because there were too many casual fucktards that were drawn into gaming by then.

And that's why gaming now is basically dead (well, undead, tons of 2/10 games at best played by idiots).

Bass Fishing over Marine Fishing?

A football game?

Omikron? Seriously?

Outtrigger instead of Unreal Tournament or Quake 3?

Berserk was pretty mediocre.

Ikaruga isn't bad, but there's so many better shmups you could have chosen.

Project Justice is a decent fighter, but like Ikaruga, there's so many better choices on the system.

It had both (Sonic R, Sonic Jam, and two or three Madden games that supported 12 player multi).

Americans ignore the Saturn because most retailers did not carry the system, and the ones that did only did for a year and a half. That and the advertisement was this surreal shit that had nothing to do with games.

>>
>>3205283

It was pretty new to have dual sticks back in those days, so you can't really fault it for not having shit that is expected from consoles today. The controller is comfy and everything but the dpad works fairly well. To call it horrible is not even slightly accurate.

Anyway, the reason why the Dreamcast is so adored is because it had so many unique games and the console itself was fairly forward thinking. It also had an absolute fuckload of nearly perfect arcade ports which was a huge selling point for people like me. After the console failed it became an incredibly flexible system for homebrewers since the GDrom drive exploit was discovered. It has probably the most interesting homebrew and dev scene of any console around-- and thus it still gets some quirky games released from it because people are so passionate about the system.
>>
>>3202557
Because people bought it for $50 and got all the games for free with how easy the privacy was. Had a imported DC in 1998 and it was a letdown.

Where was Spikeout on the fucking DC?

Nowhere to be seen.

Sega dropped the ball with the DC in favor of Crazy Taxi and shit Crazy Taxi clones and sequels.

Why did AM2 farm out it's franchise fighter to a no-name developer for the home port?

Why was a Namco fighter the crown jewel on a SEGA console?

Fuck the Dreamcast, PS2 deserved victory.
>>
>>3203554
Let's do that! My original DC conked out a few years go, but it had like 6 years of pretty consistent play before the gd rom drive went to shit, I think it started having problems like 2 years after I bought it though. Aside from the GDrom drive it's a pretty sturdy system, apparently it's possible to fix if you know how to replace the laser, and you can get the gdemu if you are vigilant.
>>
>>3202830
I don't recall any of this either. At release it was a cutting edge console with no competition in the way of other new consoles. It wasn't like it was the hipster's alternative to the PS2 at the time: it was THE new game system. If you think it was a hipster device, then yes, your opinion of it is probably based on current day perception of the fans.
>>
>>3204239
The saturn pad was way better though, even the 3d pad was better. I did love the vmu and frankly fantastic rumble pack though.
>>
>>3205636
People seem to forget that it actually had pretty good sales numbers at launch, the ps2 absolutely crushed it though because it couldn't compete with the inbuilt dvd player and EA sports titles that the ps2 had. It was always a mass market console, the hipster love it gets now is separate from that.

>>
>>3203521
ports excuse is a fallacy. name me 1 port that runs better than a game that was built on the dreamcast. you fucking can't.
>>
>>3203950
That's not the fucking case at all. Generally any game that was on PS1 and DC was better on DC, but any game that was on PS2 an DC, PS2 was superior.
>>
>>3207910
>but any game that was on PS2 an DC, PS2 was superior.
lol, no. ps2 games looked like garbage because of the terrible vram, which developers didn't know how to properly work around till late in the system's life cycle

Can confirm
>>
>>3207941

Still doesn't look garbage, but yes it is obviously not as good as the dreamcast.

3/10
>>
>>3207941
DOA2 is totally obsolete now that you can get DOA5 on PC.
>>
>>3207964
Ok? What's that got to do with anything?
>>
>>3207973
Fighting games make each other obsolete, there's no point discussing them.
>>
>>3207973
Literally does not matter whether you get the DC PS2 or Xbox version since the community has moved on to the newer games.
>>
>>3207964
>>3207982

You're an extra dense type of special aren't you?

Just saying it how it is, man.

Except literally every aspect of the ps2 version is worse.

Sure it does, I'm not denying that. However to say it looks like trash and that other ps2 games look like trash is simply wrong.

3/10 again
>>
>>3207997
Well it's a special case when talking about fighting games. The only point of those is the competition. And no one's gonna learn a fucking dreamcast game in 2016.
>>
>>3208058
Again, nobody was talking about learning DoA2. We were comparing the graphics of each version. You're going off on a tangent that has no relevance to the discussion at hand.
>>
>>3202557
Maybe it was fun
>>
>>3208071
There's no point in even PLAYING DoA2. Shit game is obsolete. Shut up now.
>>
>>3208090
You're just butthurt that a dead console managed to have better graphics than your beloved PS2, huh kiddo.

Go back to /v/ where your kind belong.

Jesus fuck of course.

Bad bait

>2 year NA lifespan.

Wrong. Games are still being released today. For example Pier Solar 2015 release.

>75% are sports games

Wrong. SEGA didn't even sign EA as a publisher.

>10 games worth playing.
I can name way more than 10 off my head.

Sonic 1 and 2
Crazy Taxi 1 and 2
Marvel v. Capcom 1 and 2
Capcom v. SNK 1 and 2
Vampire Chronicles
Street Fighter 3
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Powerstone 1 and 2
Hydro Thunder
SF Rush 2049
Shenmue 1 and 2
Resident Evil Code Veronica, RE 2, RE 3
Ready 2 Rumble 1 and 2
NBA Showtime
Virtual On
Virtua Fighter 3tb
King of Fighters Series
Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves
The Last Blade 2
Virtua Tennis
Soul Calibur
Quake 3
Skies of Arcadia
Grandia
EGG
much more not worth typing.

>highest failure rate of a console
obviously you've never owned one and are underage. This was literally never a problem until the XBOX 360. I have 2 launch Dreamcasts that still work perfectly.

>Controller is shit

Comfortable analog with SNES layout and easily wraps around hands.

>failure of a console

Not true. It was profitable and is highly collected and regarded as having a great library of games. It just wasn't enough to fix a decade of SEGA mismanagement in the hardware world.

>only hipsters like it.

Yeah, okay...

>People call it the best console ever.

It's certainly up there in my opinion.

>What am I missing?

Taste and not being underage.
>>
>>3208054

If it looks worse in every way, then that's called looking like trash. And I didn't bring up the other shit looking ps2 ports like RE:CV since other poster can bring them up if they want.
>>
Don't forget Grandia 2 which was ported to the PS2 and runs like hot garbage

Bought my first Dreamcast 3 years ago. It's great.

>>3207941
What's the bet whoever did this picture used the extremely rushed original NTSCJ DOA2 for PS2 not the fixed Hardcore version.
>>
>>3202894
Every time I see DC shitposting is PS2 vs DC, so I'd say it's more Sony fans than Nintendo fans.
>>
>>3208843

>>
>>3208973
Hardcore has extra lighting passes and particle effects over the Dreamcast version. And it does have a little bit of AA, roughly the same as Dreamcast. Some textures look worse still but not all. Overall Hardcore is better looking than the Dreamcast version.

It's non-Hardcore which is the completely AA-less shitty version.

It was going to have VF4 before development stopped.

That's interesting. Can you please tell me more or post a link?
Is it because the retards at Nintendo made it small like the Wii and it melts itself because it has no airflow/breathing room?

As I said, you can believe what you want. I stated that DOA2 on Dreamcast has the occasionally better texture. That is true. But the PS2 version has far superior lighting and self-shadowing.

Also, the PS2 has actual particle/weather effects on the snow level, dynamic stage lights on the Danger Zone level and motion blur in Tengu's stage. It's all missing on Dreamcast.

Also that video's recording of the PS2 version is way too dark.

>>3209186
>PS2 can't run Shenmue II, according to Yu Suzuki.

And that's bullshit because the PS2 is much more powerful than the Dreamcast. It's only worse in one department: VRAM. In almost every other way its specs are double or more.
