When I was just a bitch ass kid, I had a 133Mhz pc in my room with no network connection. When pokemon blue came out I downloaded it on a 14k modem on my dad's computer. I remember crying when I found out it would fit on a 1.44mb floppy disk, my only means of transferring files.

It was glorious.

This literally means nothing and is not a constructive response in any way.

How did you download Pokemon Blue when it first came out if GBC emulators didn't even exist?

not that anon but i remember this is how my buddy played it when it came out. i dunno what gb emulator was available at the time. something tells me it was gb$ something. ahhh now that i try to remember i think there were 2 gb emulators available then

good qustion, all the early gameswere compatible with both gb and gbc though right? i know i played blue on a regular gb.

Anything that actually needs Windows 9x to run isn't going to fit on a floppy.

They did have emulators back then, not perfect, but I do remember them having a simply gui. I believe the pokemon blue I downloaded was a fan translation too.

kkrieger was a demo developed to showcase a procedural generation tool by that company or demo group. When started up, the program would spend a couple minutes generating all the assets it really used. I forgot if they were generated into RAM or onto disk as well. Easily a couple dozen MB or so. Then it ran from that data. Lots of people associate procedural generation with lol-random and landscapes. krrieger goes well beyond that. All textures, many models, all levels, are procedurally generated. So what these 96k contain is effectively a bunch of generators, seeds or settings, and a small 3D engine. Engines on their own aren't big, at all. Just a bunch of hardware calls, rarely more than a few kB. The size of games is largely assets, not code

68/2... fuckin' tight controls

Fuck me hard. Best game ever. GOTY 1987
>>
>>3195561
Yeah, but it's awfully strange to make a game that advanced, and have that little use of it made. What about allowing extra levels? Though I'd understand if it imposed limitations and would refuse to run with more content than one floppy's worth, even a 720k or 360k floppy.
>>
>>3198041
96k is a common size limit in demo competitions
>>
He's talking about Lotus Sprit Challenge 3. Sorry for ruining the joke guys
>>
>>3198048
>Lotus Sprit Challenge 3
A typo, but a good one. Sprit is slang for fuel in german, and the cars in that game surely were fuel guzzlers.
That said, only the first game was the Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge. Lotus 3's full name is Lotus III - The Ultimate Challenge. Matters, because you drive more than Esprits in it
>>
>>3198047
I wasn't talking about what size the program itself should be, I was saying it probably should allow extra levels, and be at least a bit friendly towards that option.
>>
>>3198175
if they could have fit more levels in 96k, they might have done that. You certainly won't find a level loader or plugin architecture in that size.
It's a demo, an interactive graphics and tool demo. It's not meant to be modable, extensible or anything like that. The size of the binary was the hard upper limit they could not exceed, that was the primary goal.
>>
>>3194101

definitively the best MSDOS game!
>>
>>3198180
not having large amounts of moddability, I could understand, I'm sure even new textures would be quite difficult since they were procedurally generated, I just meant more levels, for which the tools wouldn't be very friendly or flexible, and I don't mean provided tools, I mean whatever tools could theoretically be made would end up being unfriendly and inflexible
>>
>>3198181
What you describe is a file loader that's dynamic and not hardcoded. Won't fit in the 96k

>>3198191
>I mean whatever tools could theoretically be made would end up being unfriendly and inflexible
kkrieger itself was made using the werkkzeug, which is purpose built for procedural generation. The game is a showcase of what you can do with it
>>
>>3198192
okay, so the insertion of extra data wouldn't have to be handles by the actual file, it would need to be done more externally
>>
Does Wizardry count? The early games fit on a single floppy but you were wise to create a duplicate for saves.
>>
>>3198208
the game included mapping sheets?! that changes everything
>>
>>3195193
>>3195601
>>3195597

It's similar to HL2 and Doom 3 in terms of its graphical features, which include realtime shadows, per-pixel lighting, image effects like bloom, and normal mapping. It's also not retro.
>>
>>3198218
Just telling the kkrieger guy that his recollection of Doom 3 & Half-Life 2 graphics are just a little hazy. Good for 95kb, not Doom 3 & Half-Life 2 good.
>>
>>3198208
The IBM version of W1-5 mangled the game mechanics. Don't play those.
>>
>>3198234
how so?
>>
>>3198234
I was just posting the picture. Most other versions for 1-3 also came on a single disk.
A bit weird is the case of V which had 9 floppies on the Apple II but only 1 for the PC98.
>>
>>3198243

Not that strange considering the PC98 version was released on a 640K floppy.

The Apple II floppies were 140K and some game data would necessarily be redundant across all the disks.
>>
>>3198398
what was the physical size of both floppies?

They were both 5.25"

>>3198473
Apple only switched to higher density when they went to 3.5" disks. The original Disk II used a Shugart SA-400 drive mechanism with Apple's custom controller board; this was singled sided, 35-track. Later Alps-supplied Disk IIs are 40 track drives, but they never updated the OS software to take advantage of it. Most likely this was because they'd already created a ton of compatibility issues by switching from 13 to 16 sector formatting in 1980 and then the switch to ProDOS in 83, so they probably didn't want to cause still more problems.
>>
>>3198234
What's the definitive Wizardry port?
>>
>>3199884
Probably one of the Japanese computer ports.
>>
>>3199890
I've heard the PSX versions are good in that they allow you to move parties from wiz5 to wiz trilogy, so it's essentially like a classic PC version but cleaned up.

You can do that on the computer versions. It's even possible to import from the FM Towns port of 5 to the PC98.

Doom mutators; mods that reference and manipulate graphic lumps from an IWAD. Here are a few good ones:

You need the Doom IWAD for these, and the ZDoom source port:
