What do you guys think of run 'n gun shooters?
They're fun
Best genre, but often feels surprisingly limited in games developed compared to other genres.

One of the best genres. Contra is my personal fave followed by Metal Slug.

Tbh, I think Mega and Super Turrican are the most playable of the series.
I've seen a couple of runngun threads by now and the case is clear: they are not popular on /vr/.

Yeah, Contra and Metal Slug are somewhat popular, but I guess when the 2 representives of the genres are hard, dick measuring contests your appeal to the general public will be low. Turrican ain't no cakewalk either.

I think there needs to be a more clear distinction between platformer run n gun and top-down run n gun tho, they play very very differently. Top downs are much more like 'shmups'

I was playing Hi no tori (MSX) lately, because I saw it recommended on the shmup thread, and I wasn't sure if what I played was a shmup or a run and gun. It's more of a shmup, but you can jump over enemies to avoid them, and levels are infinite loops, so there's even a bit of exploration because you need to find keys in order to open boss rooms. Really weird but fun game.
Then there's Sin and Punishment which bends the on-rail/cabal nature of the game and the last level becomes a regular side-scrolling run and gun game.

I like Gunforce 2 especially compared to the last 2 MS games on the NG and MS 2. But MS3 is imo is simply amazing. Gunforce 2 i think is on par with the first MS or Metal Slug X.
Rolling Thunder is one I need to try out. I feel like Shinobi is Sega's response to RT with a few minor differences. Isn't there some on the genesis too?

Rolling Thunder 2 and 3 are on the Genesis, and imo better than the first one. Rolling Thunder 2 looks like it was ghost-developed by Sega's AM2 team, with the Super blue skies, palm trees and red car aesthetic.

What about top down games, like Smash TV, Ikari Warriors, Commando or top-down levels from Contra?
Tbh I'd personally define it as a 2d shooter where player has control of screen scrolling. If it's autoscrolling, then it's shmup.
If it's 3D, then it's FPS/TPS.
