How does /vr/ feel about old eroge and/or dating simulators?

Here you can see one of the more famous ones, original White Album written by Harada Udaru.
>>
Yu-No is considered the gold standard as a game. Plenty of us have nostalgia for like True Love or Fatal Relation or even Dragon Knight and other early English translations but most "dating sims" actually fall pretty short of being "games". VNs have their own particular appeal.
>>
it's a really sad genre of game to play. like really really sad.

not hating because i can see why people would play it. but that's some lonely ass shit, tbqh family computer.

As if it's worse than spending your time playing children's games for the sake of nostalgia. How is it any different from a grown-up woman playing with barbie dolls? It's not.

Anyway, I like them. /vr/ recommended me night slave and it was good.
>>
>>3188607
I'm not playing Barney's Hide & Go Seek on Sega Genesis, homeboy. And you're absolutely right about it not being any different from a grown-up woman playing with Barbie dolls -- which is sad and ridiculous.

They're great. Dating sims are still a bit overwhelming for my Japanese skills. I tried Dôkyûsei and gave up after an hour because I had piled up dozens of new words to learn.
I did manage to get through Pia Carrot on the Saturn after I had completed the translated PC-FX port a few years ago.

I also replayed Night Slave and finally understood what was going on.

I fell in love hard with Misaki in White Album.

I like actual sims like Kakyuusei and Tokimemo, and adventure games with some exploration aspect to them like Doukyuusei, but I'm not much for just plain novels.
>>
>>3188529
Waiting 2 hours for your 2400b modem to download one crappy pixelized picture was already too much of a game. Never saw a need to make it even harder.
>>
>>3188963
Very nice. Recently I saw a cheap copy in Kamifuusen, but I already have too much stuff to even pack, so I'm not sure I'll get it.
>>
>>3188602

You only think that way because you're making a bunch of assumptions about them without ever having played one. Some of the best vns and eroge don't have sex in them, and many players admit that they skip the adult sequences to hurry up and get back to the main story.
>>
>>3188529
>How does /vr/ feel about old eroge and/or dating simulators?
I think they belong in /h/
>>
>>3189979
You think wrong.
>>
>>3189979
You don't seem to understand the point of /h/ and /vr/ or that boards can have an overlapping area.
You'll find eroge threads on /vg/ or /jp/ and occasionally other boards.
/h/ isn't the catch all board for all hentai either.

この世の果てで恋を唄う少女YU-NO.

Apparently there's a remake for this game for PSV and PS4 that's supposed to come out this Spring. I'm actually a bit surprised because I randomly stumbled on it just last night. If only I could read Moon.
>>
>>3193543
Yu-No is already translated, man. The remake might get translated but you have the original to play.
>>
>>3193543
They haven't showed a whole lot of the game considering it's supposed to be released in a few weeks, there hasn't even been a real release date.
I'm afraid they'll remove the map, save and inventory system which made the game interesting and turn it into another multiple choice adventure.
>>
>>3189926
Woah woah now bud I think you're in the minority there
>>

>remove the map, save and inventory system
That's a level of butchering I hadn't even considered. But after 999 on mobile, this actually sounds plausible.
>>

I played the demo on last years TGS and it was all there.

One of my favs is Yu-No and I wish more old Japanese VNs were translated.
I can carry a spoken conversation well enough but my knowledge of Kanji is utter shit.
>>
>>3188529
I kind of feel like playing both this and the remake to compare them one day.
>>

The original has RNG-based SLG.
>>
>>3195304
Did they take the conversation topic system out of the remake?

I'm not sure what other conversation you were expecting since there really aren't that many /vr/ eroge of note that's been translated.

>>
>>3201453
How many people do we have around here who can read untranslated games to hold a discussion?
>>

Based on personal experience on /vr/, plenty of people.
>>
>>3201597
Few here know jap and even fewer can stand VNs.

>Some of the best eroge don't have sex in them
Nigga you just went full retard!

>>3193545
The remake looks like absolute crap, it completely throws out the late-80s anime style.
>>
Problem about Visual Novels, if you've played one, you've played them all.
>>
>>3201636
Eroge don't need sex, they need eroticism.
>>
>>3201638
It's literally the same clichés over and over.
Hey it's the gratuitous beach chapter. It's the gay best friend. I'm really into this grill, she's tsundere with red hair. School festival is coming up I wonder if they will go with a Haunted House or Maid Cafe theme this time. Let's confess our totally platonic love to my non-blood related sister under a Sakura tree!
Etc, etc.
>>
>>3201638
>Problem about Key, if you've played one, you've played them all.
Fixed that for you. That problem is only a problem with shitty high-school romance VNs.
>>
>>3201648
>high-school romance
Which happens to be a majority of retro era VNs.

To be fair Eve Burst Error and Divi Dead were cool.

When someone says that modern games are dumbed down and too easy, I snort at them and tell them they have shit taste and to play better games. When someone says that VNs are cliche-ridden cookiecutters, I tell them to read better VNs. I can apply this to any form of media in existence.

Go read Saya no Uta, it's good and also short. If you have time on your hands; read Tsukihime or Sekien no Inganock. If you want romance for some reason, go read Yume Miru Kusuri.
>>
>>3201662
>Saya no Uta
>Tsukihime
Already did, none of those are retro era, btw.
Speaking of snort, holy fuck the VN community is about as autistic as the shmup fags.
>>
>>3201669
I never said they were and I do not give a single fuck so STFU mate.
>>
>>3201685
Feisty.
>>
>>3188564
Dating sims are much more game-y than VNs though. The better ones become a trial of crisis management like in tokimeki, where careful scheduling and luck can help prevent your life getting flipped turned upside-down.

Though, yeah, there are a lot of low rent dating sims as well and I generally put dating sims and raising sims together as games because usually the only difference is whether it's a player surrogate or another character that is being raised.

>>3188840
> I had piled up dozens of new words to learn
while I should probably welcome the fact that I'm learning, there's nothing more frustrating than realizing your own inadequacies while simultaneously trying to get through what should generally be a pleasant experience. If the line is spoken then I generally get a better idea especially once I realize the words I can't read are ones I should know, I just forgot. It's just not a happy experience.
>>
>>3201669
Tsukihime had a trial release in 1999 so it's scratching the line.

Shitty generalization to which plenty of outliers exist.

When you step outside retro, English readers are much more aware of those outliers.
>>
>>3201638
>If you read one book, you read them all.
Though speaking of people complaining about oversaturation of "high-school romance focused" VNs, I don't even think they became epidemic until a certain point and I want to say it's after they stopped being retro - the PC-98 era seems to be mostly Fantasy genre from my memories.

TenGogo was high school. But I think there are enough alternatives settings like detectives.
Dating Sims seem typecast for high school life.

What kind of game was Nightshift Nurses/Yakin Byôto?

>>
Okay, guys, I know you'll help a nigger out, so hear me out.
There was this "game" for the PSX in which you could have sex with 3 girls, one of which, iirc, is an asiam chick into BDSM. It's not a dating sim, or eroge, but a fucking sim with a climax-o-meter for the girls. The main menu was in russian but rhe girls spoke english. It wasn't CGI or drawn, but real girls.
Anyone know the name of that gem?
>>
>>3201645
eroticism

like sex
>>
>>3203286
That's the PCE remake of DK1 which had all the nudity censored.
Though in the case of DK1 it didn't hurt much since the game had little nudity and no sex to begin with.
>>
>>3203607
I think you can be erotic without having to outright display penetration but it's not easy (and definitely needs something less blunt than modern day stupidity like having CGs of the girls eating bananas with "yogurt" splatted all over their faces)

>As if it's worse than spending your time playing children's games for the sake of nostalgia. How is it any different from a grown-up woman playing with barbie dolls? It's not.

a man playing "regular" vidya games or a woman playing with barbies is not the same as playing a dating sim regardless of what gender you are

ok girls may even have more leeway with playing some romanticized dating sim in the same way its socially acceptable to read some barbara cartland mill and boon shit.

but a guy.. playing a "dating" sim.. and lets be honest here, its for the most part some thinly veiled weeboo waifu dare i say it even loli... its the same people that fap to vocaloids and have cirno body pillows...

you can post the "benefits of 2d waifus" memes
