The only catch is that you can't fly the N1. I spent so many hours playing this with a joystick.
>>
Why is it so hard to actually find these games, or really any classic PC game that isn't Doom?
>>
>>3184864
Megaman x1 dos was pretty dodgy. you'd probably be able to run it fine now with modern processors, but it had way to steep requirements to match the SNES's performance for computers of the time.
x3 is one of those games that hates runing outside of win 95, and it's essentially a slipperier port of the ps1 version.
x4 and 5 are pretty good after some patches, since they're almost identical ports of the ps1 versions.
x6 is pretty messed up, and only in korean.
x7 is shit and so is it's port
the x8 port is really good, even supporting some widescreen settings and running without much hesitation on modern OS's.
>>
>>3184832

The sound was a bitch about working, but it was a famously solid port.

Bodyblows was likeable too.

SF2LIU was nice, even though it had vega replaced by some guy from another title.

So fighting games on PC were quite alright, although I understand that the virtua fighter ports were make specifically for nvidia NV1 cards, the ones that used quadrilaterals.

I had a box set of Sonic PC games when I was younger, it had:
>Sonic CD
>Sonic R
>S&K Collection
>Sega Smash Pack 2 (had Sonic 2)
Good fun, but the music for Sonic R never worked on my old computer.
>>
>>3185409
>Sega Smash Pack 2
>Sega Smash Pack 2 is a compilation of eight games for the PC, seven of which are Sega Mega Drive games, emulated quite nicely with a commercial version of KGen. This compilation is also included in the 2001 compilation Sonic Action 4 Pack, and later packaged along with Sega Smash Pack in the 2002 compilation Twin Pack: Sega Smash Pack & Sega Smash Pack 2 and the 2003 compilation Sega PC Mega Pack.

Interesting! I knew there was something different about the genesis and PC's soundtracks. I always liked the act 1 boss music from the PC version, and when I listened to the genesis version, thinking there was only one version of the song, it sounded much different.

I can see how you could have preferences in the genesis version, but I gotta tell ya, can't go wrong with PC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqTfLole4mk

>I wasn't aware it was emulated. Also, what inaccuracies did it have?

Framebuffer effects (like motion blur, depth of field and others) apart from a select (I think only the underwater and stealth camo effect) few aren't even simulated by the software renderer, Alert theme is 30 seconds long instead of the full 60 and doesn't include the Evasion edit, only two of the many boss fights use the (mutilated) Duel theme while the rest is just the Alert tune for some reason, stereo tracks (cutscenes and codecs with music) are read at 32000hz instead of the intended 33075hz so they sound off pitch (the audio files are literally ADPCM from the PS1 version that you can literally copy from one to another, you can sort of make your own Japanese version, but the codec calls are still kind of glitchy without some modifications), all of the music and sound effects are sampled at 22050hz 8bit while in the PS1 they're always mixed at 44100hz 16bit because of the more competent audio hardware, and I could go on. Also the fact that they removed the Psycho Mantis stuff but I could have dealt with that.

It's nowhere near close a god-tier port (MGS2 is as much more deserving title, but the support isn't really great outside of specific video hardware and the controls choices for not-joypad peripherals leave a bit to be desidered). The only thing it did well is giving out some cheats like free camera and documenting the game a little more for modders, which could also mean modding the PS1 version since the basic files are fucking 1:1 with each other.

The reason they didn't have the evasion theme was because the porters couldn't be assed to port Konami's sound engine to PC.

It was a sample based format originally. Much like tracker modules. This allowed for some dynamic music.

As the other anon pointed out, all they did was rip mp3 files from a fansite and put them in the game. As far as I know the escape theme doesn't even exist in that version.

Personally the textures are fine to me, what would really make SADX look great is if the original lighting from the Dreamcast version got ported over.

There's a really nifty team of modders that's always working on this game and hope it comes to fruition someday. Just the other day somebody made a mod for draw distance and for Tails to be able to pick Sonic up like in the older games.

I would show comparisons of the lighting in the Dreamcast version and the PC version but I don't have any at the moment,

The Yamaha XG softsynth is still running off from MIDIs, and it still doesn't match up to the PS1 music.

Also the softsynth doesn't work on modern Windows, and the only other way to get the superior (when compared the GM and AWE, there's no GS format) XG MIDI to work is through the SYXG VSTi, and MIDI loopback software or hope you have an external XG MIDI module/keyboard.

I don't have much experience with older PC games so maybe I'm just an idiot but I can't seem to get the menus in this one to work correctly. In fullscreen they only show up when I mouse over them and when I try to use a program to put it in a window all the menus show up outside of it. Sega PC stuff was amazing, there was plenty of great stuff; I also had the Virtua Cop 2 and House of the Dead ports back then, I loved them.

Thankfully a few of them still work on modern systems, even if a few have some slight issues (VC2 in particular seems to run a tad slower)

>>3202224
Jet Moto got a port around the same time, and ESPN Extreme Games got one (on DOS) some time before that.

Supposedly there's also a Twisted Metal 1 port but I haven't seen any evidence of it actually existing.

>>3191437
It did, yup. What's interesting is that it was the basis for later versions of the game (the unlockable version on Panzer Dragoon Orta and the Sega Ages 2500 version on PS2 are both based on this one)

Chill, it's LGR. He's actually a good youtuber who covers /vr/ material.

I know TM2 had a PC port, but a TM1 port intrigues me. I'll have to do some snooping for that.

The PC port was probably using MIDI for music, that would make it sound different on practically every PC you play it on with different hardware
>>
>>3213826
>>3187306
The music was definitely changed from the console version and isn't due simply to using MIDI; this is extremely noticeable when comparing Knuckles' theme when you run into him on Angel Island 1. On the PC it sounds like a ninja theme but with an almost mocking feel, while on the console I recall it being more a series of claps, like it was supposed to be the start of a rap. There is a MIDIOUT.DLL file, but if I'm not mistaken it should have sounded relatively similar because it used the MS MIDI instrument patches instead of the hardware's, but that might be a confabulation. I seem to recall it sounding identical on our two computers though.

I still wish that Sega could re-release VO (and Oratario Tangram as well) for GOG or something. It's a shame nobody seems to talk about it anymore nowadays.

Oh man... triggered af

I remember going to a computer fair with my dad when I was 10 years old. Bought this with money I'd saved up and then got home and it was glitchy bootleg or something. The Glover model in any setting didn't display. It was just the shadow where he was meant to be. Depressed the fuck out of me as a kid

would these work on a modern PC? I've gotten Sonic R for PC to work.

You know the Playstation is running off MIDI too right? If it sounded shitty it was due to your soundcard. I never understand the hate for MIDI, that whole score was composed with it. It's still used to-day in almost every song you hear, it's an industry standard and it changed the way music is created for the better.
>>
>>3211248
I love multi-window RPGs, so rad.
>>
>>3215708
People hate MIDI because they are unaware that you can use more than 1 default sound patch that comes built into Windows (or with your sound card driver).

I remember using custom drivers for my soundblaster that allowed any different sound font set to be loaded for midi. Good times.

>>3215758
I had SGM V2.01 as my soundfont. It's stellar.

Defining soundfonts on Windows 7 is a pain in the ass though, I've forgotten how to set them so it's not set up on my new PC.

Wingroove was pretty cool sounding.

>>3215758
I think it has more to do with the fact that amateur webmasters from the late 90s and early 00's abused them by putting auto-playing MIDIs on every crappily constructed Geocities page.
>>

>SGM V2.01

Not him but what soundfont would you prefer other than SGM?
