Ironically it's because there are almost no real jobs in the field is why it attracts so many women. There have always been degrees like this, it's sort of taken over for midwifery in medical schools. There are always far, far more midwifery students than there are positions at the end. But it doesn't matter because most of them aren't really training to be midwives.
Their goal in going to college isn't to learn a skill so they can get a job, the whole goal is to find their husband. Which is why midwifery is popular. It gets them close to potential doctors who can support them well.
Liberal arts is much the same thing, but for the women who don't think they can compete with the ones going after high class positions like doctors. So it's essentially like a new degree in Home Economics. Except it focuses on being a housewife who is also a champion for social justice.

Ys I actually had a pretty good method of handling this.
You are tasked with grinding (aka learning combat) and buying weapons before you can progress past the opening of the story, but you won't get a new dialogue box unless you equip it. It might confuse players at first but it's an amazingly organic way of handling the idea. The NPC doesn't trust that you're "ready" until you are actually wearing the gear.
