So until yesterday, I thought the first Shantae game came out on the Commodore 64. I was roundly, fairly abused by all my game bros.
I seriously can't get this out of my head, though - what fucking game am I thinking of? Is there some platforming franchise SIMILAR to Shantae that goes back farther than 2002, to older computer/console systems?

Shantae on the C64 would be just a red rectangle for the lower part and two purple rectangles for the upper part.
C64 and earlier didn't really have games, they're more glorified calculators.
