I recently came across this game from the long forgotten Twinbee series.
It essentially plays like Sonic The Hedgehog 2, except with the added feature of being able to SOAR HIGH INTO THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE AND OFF INTO DEEP SPACE- any time you want.

It's like rocket knight except you can literally fly off the planet and ignore the stages at your leisure... it's almost like Just Cause in a way.

I remember reading good reviews for this when it came out but it just wasn't in any of the shops near me.
