Being spoiled by granny as a kid was great. I also got a Genesis, a 3DO, PS1, N64, Saturn, Game Boy, Game Gear and more stuff I'm probably forgetting.
I never felt going as far as to ask for a Neo Geo but I think she would have bought it for me.

Neo Geo only worked if you were an actual rich person who could afford every console in the market. Otherwise if you were a kid stuck with a Neo Geo was kind of bad. Getting arcade games at home is great but at one point you want to play something else besides SNK fighting games. Also each Neo Geo game costed more or less as much as other consoles.

At least it included 4-Dimensional graphics and real life-sized characters though, so that justified the price.
>>
>>3171349
I did, because once again I seriously doubt that anon asked for an SNES and instead got a more expensive system.

Most kids in your situation did like that stupid AVGN episode that the rest of the conversation seems to be taken from, but like him they instead said, "But this one is 16 bit!" "What does that mean?" "Uh... I dunno..."

My parents were immigrants and were largely ignorant of how games worked so when we got a Nintendo, we got a Nintendo with Mario/Duck Hunt and that was it.
You got a -Nintendo- not the Nintendo for games. We still rented stuff though, that's how I got to play TMNT the arcade game and stuff.
My Dad would help other families get their citizenship and stuff, so when this other poor family showed up we gave them the Nintendo to kind of ease the transition to a new country.
Fast forward a few years and the same thing happens. I get the Super Nintendo Donkey Kong set and it was my only game for yeaaars.
Until the 64 came out.
I had a bunch of rich cousins that got it immediately. They would gloat about how the graphics were so sick and one of my cousins even claimed he got "graphics sickness" cause it looked so good.
I mention to them I only have the Super Nintendo and they laugh at me, mentioning how they will never play theirs again. They give me a stack of Super games:
Zelda, Mario World/All Stars, Secret of Mana, Pocky & Rocky, NBA Jam TE, and a bunch of other stuff.
I still have them to this day and it sparked my collector curiosity forever.
Except for that Pocky & Rocky, another cousin stole that for heroin money.

My parents (mostly my Dad) always seemed biased against Nintendo for some reason. I would ask for a new N64, but I would end up getting a Genesis (still awesome though). Couple years later I still didn't get a N64, but instead a PSX. I never did get a Nintendo system until I traded in most my Christmas shit at Toys R Us for a GBA SP. Next year they decided to buy me a GameCube.

It's making fun of stackoverflow solutions.

Like, someone will ask how to do something in a programming language, and someone will recommend a library that will do it for you. But the asker didn't really learn anything.

It like asking someone how to fix a leaky faucet and they say "hire a plumber."

I'm not sure how it's related to his post though.

>Clearly overestimating the popularity of Apple products outside of the US as usual

To US publications if it's outside the US then it doesn't matter. For example any time there's a bombing in Europe they only ever report on it, beyond saying it happened anyway, if Americans are involved somehow. Over 200 Europeans could die but they'll only ever talk about the Americans that were kinda close by and "mentally traumatized" by seeing the attack.
>>
My family got poorer as time went on.

When I was born (as the 2nd son) we already had an Atari in the household, so I assume it was bought fairly early on.
The NES was a xmas gift, new in box, bought during its prime.
The GENESIS was a xmas gift a few years into the console's life (it was the Sonic 2 package), but was still new in box.
SNES was a random gift during easter, it was also a few years into the console's life and bought used at a flea market, came in a LttP set box, but dealer took out the game and replaced it with Street Fighter II, which always bugged me because LttP looked like a much better game.

From that point onward, I had to buy consoles myself, and never at launch, always waited for price drops.

Also, we could barely afford games, even during the NES. We would usually get one or two games every xmas if we were lucky, (one for me, one for my brother) and that's it, I pretty much had to depend on renting or borrowing games from other kids in the neighborhood to escape boredom. I think SNES was the worst offender in that regard, a game like Mario I could play over and over when I didn't have anything better, but SFII is fucking boring in single player, and few people wanted to play with me because I was better than them, not that I became some sort of tourneyfag mind you, but more because I eventually learned how to pull basic special moves like the Hadoken, the concept of a QCF on a gamepad was alien to them. I think it took like 2 xmas until we got new games and they were DKC2 and Yoshi's Island.

I opened Super Mario 64 Christmas morning, saw I had no other presents, and asked if they had kept the receipt so I could return it for something else. They couldn't afford the console, and I knew that. "Sure, anon, but the store's closed on Christmas. We'll go tomorrow. Sorry, we didn't realize."
See my grandmom later that day and unwrapped the N64 she bought for me.
Fuck you, Mom and Dad, you knew all along and made me think I was returning that game the next day.

I'm not saying it doesn't. It just doesn't have that feature when played on a GBC. The video you linked is being played through a Game Boy emulator with SGB support. BGB has such a feature.

the point is this was the Christmas right after the anime first came to America so Pokemon craze was at its peak. I did remember the blue palette though.
>>
>>3177783
Yeah, the GBC had its own palette setting for the two games. Blue for Pokemon Blue Ver. and Red for Pokemon Red Ver. Unfortunately, there are no other enhancements when played on a GBC, so the colors pretty much stay as red or blue. At least, however, you can use a code on the boot screen to change the palette, but like the default ones the new setting will remain constant throughout the game.
