If releasing spinoffs on other platforms means being dead, then Nintendo died when they reelased the Windows Mario typing games or the CD-i stuff.
That's not how it works. Wii, DS and 3DS all sold like hotcakes, the WiiU "failing" doesn't mean they're doomed. Whether people like it or not Nintendo are going to be around for quite some time. The company and the IPs will probably outlive us all.

But since you brought it up, and seeing as the NX is a mobile device with the TV dock coming later, it's the first step in a multi-step plan that ends with Nintendo developing only for mobile and handheld.
That's why the fact that they're developing anything on mobile (which really is their biggest competitor) is a big deal. Other anon is absolutely correct in saying that they're testing the waters since the Mario mobile game did quite well also.
