I've read that quite a number of people swear by these being far better than the PS1 remakes. Any particular reasons why? I have played each of the SCD versions in the distant past but didn't manage to hang onto them, so memory is very fuzzy outside of them having random battles.

Also Lunar thread?
>>
Akshully it's only the second game that's clearly superior on the sega cd. The first game is fine, they only messed up the soundtrack that sounds really wimpy and lame on the PS1 for some reason.
>>
>>3160638
>random battles.
Yeah that's a cool thing they added on the ps1, you can see and avoid enemies on the map.
>>
>>3160638
why did WD fuck up eternal blue by forcing saves to cost magic? They also censored the boss tiddies. Fuck WD just play the japanese version which is also cheaper.
>>
>>3160653

I think people with the benefit of hindsight give WD too much shit

No one else was ever going to localize the stuff they did at the time. I'm glad they were around.

tru and I appreciated it at the time. I only started hating them later after I learned the changes they made.

I only played the Saturn ones.
Are they the same as the PS1 versions?
>>

pretty much. Although the Saturn has better sounding instruments in the music.

It's a bunch of strange little stuff like missing animations and at least one missing music track in the remakes. And overall I think the new graphics often look worse.

Here's Illusion Woods on Sega CD

>>3160653
They thought the game was too easy. The magic XP thing is retarded but doesn't really make that much difference in the end. Their translation itself is by far the worst part.
>>
>>3161368
And this is the same section in the remake. The large trees with hidden underground passages are gone, replaced with a maze of hedges that you push though.

This is one of the most glaring, so it's what I point out most often but is indicative of the whole remakes. They both feel like not quite as much effort was put into them the second time around.

I'd never tell someone not to play the remakes, but if you have free access to both I think the originals are better.

The only really BAD version is the GBA port of Lunar 1.
>>
>>3160879
Alright then
>Lunar 1
>Luna stays around the party longer and they expanded the story a bit
>more anime movies
>you can dash and see enemies on the map
>soundtrack is bad
>dungeons maze layout are ok

>Lunar 2
>they removed the magic exp system
>they fucked up the dash mechanic which made dodging enemies a lot harder
>they streamlined the dungeon layouts a lot, most maps are the same copy pasted room with different exits. think zelda lttp lost woods
>not as many anime movies as first game but they are better animated than sega cd
>story is better than first game
>soundtrack is a bit better but still inferior to sega cd
>>
Ooh also they added the bromides which is cool, although they are hard as fuck to find.
>>
>>3161371
>The only really BAD version is the GBA port of Lunar 1.
I actually really enjoy playing Lunar 1 GBA. Game looks nice, has some twists in the story and gameplay, and it's drastically shorter than any other version (so even though it's not the best version you're not investing a ton a time into it).

Now Lunar 1 PSP, that game is trash. Art style is hideous, song lyrics are literal translations and as such have no flow to them, and everything about the gameplays been slowed to a crawl. Plus those loading times...
>>
>>3161463
>bromides
Dat Borgan one.
>>
>>3161480
>Now Lunar 1 PSP, that game is trash. Art style is hideous

Holy crap you're right. That one totally slipped under my radar, but looking it up it looks awful. I swear something must have happened to GameArts their games were great at first then got steadily worse. I waited forever for a new Lunar and then when it finally came it was Dragon Song and awful...

I really should figure out what hoops I need to jump through to play Magic School one of these days and see if it was any good or not.

Anyone else notice how horribly compressed/artifacted the cutscenes look in Lunar on ps1? The Sega CD ones look better because they're just pixel gifs.

Also Lunar2 on Sega CD had cut boss fights
>>
One thing of note is that Lunar 1 PSX had a lot of its story rewritten, but Lunar 2 PSX didn't have as many rewrites, the story is almost the same as the Sega CD game. So actually, there's a pretty glaring story hiccup if you play both PSX games, one after the other, because Lunar 2 references something that only happened in Lunar 1 Sega CD.

I won't spoil it, but it has to do with the final form of the final boss. They're different in Lunar 1 Sega CD and PSX. Lunar 2 PSX references the Sega CD boss.
>>
>>3161683
Its because the PSX games are bad ports of the Saturn ones and Saturn has a different way of rendering cutscenes from the PSX.
>>
>>3161683
>PS Lunar2 had cut boss fights compared to SCD
fixed
>>
>>3161683
>>3161760
PSX FMVs are 15fps (console limitation, no way around it)
Sega Saturn FMVs are 30fps
>>
I grew up on the Sega CD versions and only played the PSX ones in adulthood.

The music is better on the SCD version of L1. Way better. However, story-telling is superior on PSX.
I enjoyed battles more on SCD than on PSX, too. And there were more spells though, to be fair, many spells grow obsolete as the game progresses.
Now, I don't recall if this is relevant to PSX or just SCD, but if you tried to sell key items in the SCD version of L1, you'd often get specific dialogues based on the item and the store you were trying to sell it in. I liked going around town-to-town to read all the different dialogues that could happen from selling key items. Trying to sell the wings in Meribia was amusing. The clerk tried to guess how the wings work.
>do you throw them at the enemy and they flap them to death? or do you roll the wings up and shove them down enemy throats?

Also, even long after towns and bit characters fell out of being part of the story, you could travel back to various towns after key events and their dialogues would often change. Even characters you would never think about, like the woodsman on Caldor Isle and the hag in the woods north of Saith, periodically change their dialogue depending on what's going on around the game world. I don't think the PSX version kept up with this.

Both versions of L2 are about the same, with PSX's story being just /slightly/ better due to its nuance and SCD's gameplay being just /slightly/ better due to its dungeons being more entertaining to play through.

I hated the way progression goes in L2, though, where the gameworld expands only one town at a time. Ugh.
>>
>>3161854
The little people change their dialogues through the whole game in the PSX version too. You can go around even to your first town and people would comment on the head of the magic guild being replaced, or the Grindery appearing.

Grandia also did this.
>>
>>3160638
Lunar 1 on Sega CD is superior just because of the intro.

As >>3161873 mentioned, that did happen in the PSX version as well. It was also the only way you could get some of the more broken equipment as well(ring that halved MP costs? Hell yeah!)

>>3161748

I've played both PSX versions over and over, with a lot of knowledge of the SCD events. Try as I might, I don't recall a single instance where they talk about (fuck this, I'm spoiling it) Ghaleon turning into a demon at the end. I'm calling citation needed, anon.

>>3162601
Sega CD, like most consoles, had good gems, and a ton of shovelware. Lunar 1 and 2 are two of the best gems. It should be pretty easy for you to find/figure out a list for the others.

>>3162601
Sega CD is really good but Sega ruined its reputation by focusing their marketing campaign almost entirely on shitty FMV games like Sewer Shark.

i never understood this.

I clean and maintain my shit and my OG hardware I got as a kid still runs like new, stuff I buy I aim for mint or close to, sometimes I even disassemble and clean them up.

I watch AVGN and he has like 40 snes controllers and 36 of them dont work.

am i lucky?
and autist?
very jew about retro gaming?

I have replaced games though. Had a shit room mate once, let him and his whale of a GF play smash bros, got it back when he moved out, disc was unreadable. Luckily that was in 2010 so I was able to replace it for $24.99 at gamestop. I'd rage if that happened today.
