I feel like the girl 'got it.' The dude looks like he's trying to do Blue Steel with a bloody nose. Either way, the 90s were a strange time. "Here, but this game that will physically abuse you!"

>>3161685
>>3161687
I feel like with older games they were marketed more for the "Challenge" than the fun factor. Older games in arcades or on older consoles never felt like they wanted you to win or you were even supposed to win. The game over screens made you feel like shit and the concepts never felt like they were supposed to be inviting. This is in contrast with newer games where it's basically wish fulfillment and they're made in a way to where anyone can beat them. The 90s were the awkward midway between the two where they wanted to seem edgy and challenging but also zany and fun. That's probably why it was my favorite decade for video games.
Also I just realized I kept my name on here from a thread over at /co. Hopefully that doesn't piss people off over here.

people won, but the prize was converted to a monthly payment, and then the company would go "bankrupt" and stop payments. Most winners got a net positive amount of money out of the deal, but it was definitely not what was advertised and since it was pay-to-play, the vast majority of players lost out.
>>3172098
Yep. The subsequent rounds' puzzles were much harder, or in some cases, completely ambiguous about what the correct answer is.
Also, you aren't informed if any of your answers are wrong, so it's possible for every entrant to have a wrong answer and there to be no winner. Plus the prizes were donated/discounted so any money going into the company was easy to turn to profit in the unlikely event of a winner.
My research into it indicated that there have only been two winners, but it's all rumours and hearsay, so don't take my word for anything.

Oh, and the sound shift thing was really odd. When you pressed left on the d-pad the left side of your headphones became louder and the right softer, and vice versa.
>>3173195
I guess because they figured if the character was facing left, he'd hear things coming from the left better.
Problem is the NES was almost entirely music and the sounds your character made.
