I never played a Breath of Fire game before, where should I start?
>>
3 then 4

You can play BoF 1 and 2 if you really like the others, but they feel more dated and are not that good storywise
>>
>>3152038
3 looks really good, but it's incredibly slow and boring. They really could have cut the entirety of the pre-time skip.

1 or 4. 1 if you want to play them all. They get progressively better, so that will give you the most fun with the least disappointment.

4 if you just want to see what Breath of Fire is like. It's the best game in the series.

You will also get the recommendation that 3 is by far the best in the series by someone who played that one first. 3 is good, but I disagree with it being anywhere near as good as 4. He's very fond of it though so you might be too.

I played all the Breath of Fire games in the order they were released. My opinion? Breath of Fire 3 is the best. (It's my all-time favorite game.)

The gameplay is addictive and deep. Where do I even begin. Let's see... you have a "masters system." This allows you apprentice each character under a different master. Doing so alters their stats as you level-up, and causes them to learn special attacks depending on which master you assign them to. (There's 15 masters in the game.)

The Dragon Gene system allows you to collect dragon genes, then splice them together and transform into different dragon types.

A fishing mini-game can literally be played for hours, and some anons have been known to play the game for the fishing alone.

A massive desert must be crossed by aligning the stars above you. The whole game is insanely deep, looks great, sounds great, and plays great.
In short, Breath of Fire 3 has teeth!

All the retro Breath of Fire games are good, but I rank them like this:
(1.) Breath of Fire III
(2.) Breath of Fire IV
(3.) Breath of Fire II
(4.) Breath of Fire

The first two games are much harder, so if you do play them in order, and I and II are too much for you, don't let that discourage you from trying III and IV, because they're much easier.

(I have arrived in this thread, of course. Now cue the Katt poster, and we're all set.)

To add to this guys post.

They toned down so of the grind in the GBA re-release of Breath of Fire 2: you get more exp from battles and random battles don't happen as often as the SNES game (I think). Might be worth playing that instead for 2. I didn't play BOF 1 so who knows about that one.
>>
>>3152076
Myrmidon's skin is so good looking. Too bad the ending was kinda shallow.
>>
>>3152131
Okay, maybe she. Doesn't matter. "He" is less clumsy than always typing He/she or similar and most people here are male.

I really like how they toned down the grind for for the remakes. Only complaint is the remakes featured graphics that hurt my eyes.

Yes! Definitely one of my favorite dragon forms. Ryu looks really great in that style.

I agree with other anons, start with 3. There's something about it, I don't know, just love the world and graphics, it really sets the scene. For the most part they're not really related outside a mild reference so any order is really fine, but I never could get into the SNES ones personally. BoF3 is one of my top games of all time though, I just have great memories of staying up till 4 am that summer playing it.

4 is the best retro one

the best overall one though isn't retro

Start with 2. While 1 is not a bad game, it's tedious in comparison to the other games. 2 is one of the best RPG's of the era. And it was a good era. You will get intro'd to the style of BOF. The dragons, wyindians, side shit to break the monotomy of standard RPG fare. Plus 2 has the best hunting. Then hit up 3 and 4. Both great games.

I never saw either but was about to say that could be any sailor girl but you're probably right about it being Sakura. The style is too out of place for it to be anyone else in the game. That's cool. Chun-Li got a cameo in either BoF1 or 2 also, I can't remember which.

The gal just doesn't get it.

No actually, I find the whole relationship between Ryu and Nina to be cute at best. I like Ryu being with Nina more than Ryu together with Deis. Even though Deis is more fitting, Nina had the childhood connection with Ryu. They shared a lot of memories; my favorite being them exploring the streets of Wyndia, together. Ryu was weaker than his brotherly senpais, Rei and Teepo when he first started out. But protecting Nina brought out a stronger and more passionate side to him. Which makes me believe Nina played the biggest role in advancing his character.

I like to picture them being together in the end.

Everything in Breath of Fire 3 looks great, indeed. But the food especially, I give you that.
The game has such a charming and delightful pixel-set. It's so pretty!

Played only IV...

Only thing good and interesting was Fou Lu and be able to play as the BBEG sometimes....

But generally the game was "meh"...

None of the characters really stand out, locations are boring, wrost pacing on story ever, seriously.... and the game was TOO easy... I only saw animations for knocked out characters on a cutscene... The only time I had some difficult was on the final fight and yet I never saw the game over screen.

The game allows you to use replace your party if you end in a wipe but I have only discovered that on the final fight because everything was so easy that I never need to replace fainted members.

Well like any RPG it'll take a while until enough opens up that you can really take advantage of all the mechanics, so it might look at first like FF but it's pretty once you start hooking up with masters and stuff. My first playthrough was 75 hours so you get a lot of meat in BoF3.

>tough
It's like you have never played the game. She is only skin-deep tough, inside she's a shattered glass. If not for the Party, she would commit suicide. "I always wished to disappear.." "You are the most important figure in my life, Hero." She's very melancholic outside of her masquerade.

Katt, on the other hand, is of another bitter fate, but literally nobody mentions it. She's most likely is an orphan and most of her childhood spends in survival in the wildest wild. Some of that time she's a coliseum gladiator. She's disgustingly resilient and competitive, and for that she should be mentioned. I would pick that anytime over emo shit. No one ever gives her any credit for finding herself in life. By herself. Hell, the game isn't even about her past which she has fought by herself, but about her future. "Life is more than just fighting, fill your heart with other things.." Whereas Nina is only starting, Katt is just expanding herself.

It's probably bullshit to sate/pander to the fans, but from what I heard, they were originally going to have Ursula's father kill Yuna off. Had they known that fans hated Yuna so much, they would've went through with that.

>they were originally going to have Ursula's father kill Yuna off.

No they weren't. Ive said it before but Yuuna's survival is too perfect.

It ties into Ryu and Fou's final confrontation and their nature as opposites.

Fou Lu driven mad by the events he witnessed aims to wipe humanity out because he deems them wicked even if it means taking the few good with him. Ryu's goal is to protect the innocent even if it means the wicked go unpunished. Yuuna being the single most wicked we've seen.

With Yuuna surviving it ads real weight to this clash of ideals. Yes people like Elina and Mami are good without question but compare that to the damage one Yuuna is capable of. Are "humans" worth protecting? Are we all as bad as Fou believes or is he just angry from loss?

The game ends with Ryu winning as the good ending but thanks to Yuuna surviving and planning on starting all over the question isn't so cut and dry.

If Yuuna and all the badguys died the ending confrontation would amount to generic anime idealism and sophistry. We need a consequence on the good side to balance out the bad side and keep it from being a black and white cliche. Maybe the game could have spelled it out better but I like that they didn't beat us over the head with it.

Plus if they really wanted him to die they would have killed him in the manga adaption when they had the chance too. (pretty good read, check it out)

plus there's the popular fan theory that Yuuna is the one who created Myria and is responsible for well pretty much every bad thing that happens in the series ever. Myria the false goddess, Yuuna's main goal was the creation of such a thing. He's also totally the kind of guy who could turn a bodyless goddess into a snake women too.

food for though

>but it pleases me to see so much love for Dragon Quarter.

Hell yeah, nigga.
>>
3>2>4>1. Never played Dragon Quarter, but heard mixed things.

3 was my first, so it's probably nostalgia, but I really liked it for the stuff some anons mentioned. Rei was awesome, the game was pretty long, and it was disturbing on some levels while also retaining a lot of the Breath of Fire charm. If that is not enough, one of the party members is an onion wearing pants that hulks out when he attacks. You really should not need more than that in your life.

Four is generally adored here on /vr/, but I never really got into it. I didn't care for much of the cast, aside from Cray and Fou Lou, Scias is the Amarant of this game that has no business being a party member since he brings virtually nothing to the story. As for the story itself, it is the high point. Political intrigue, violence, douchebaggery of the highest caliber and such. Good game, just not one I loved particularly.

2 was a ride for me from start to finish. I loved the party members, I was very interested in the story line (especially since I had no fucking idea what was going on from the begining all the way up to near the ending), the world was fun, the shaman mixing was fun. It's got a fat frog as a party member who uses a rapier which is also funny as shit.

1 shows it's age the most, but it is not without merit. One of the party members can also transform into stronger versions by mixing with other party members, the story was very typical jrpg fare, but for the year it was developed, I don't see that as a bad thing. Still, the worst of the bunch.
>>
>>3152452

This.

I'd say play the first 4 in order. 1 and 2 are more linked together than the latter two are. Dragon Quarter is very different and is often referred to as the "black sheep" or "series killer" for being very different (and it is), but it's easily my favorite.

The Nina in this one seems so frail and helpless at first, you only want to protect her. Never before have I felt the urge to take care of a fictional character so much.

I love this artwork as the gentle, motherly expression on Lin's face reminds me so much of these feelings.

I want to say yes but then you said Euro.

The game IS fantastic, but the Pal version isn't what Id call the definitive release. It removed the quick save function so you can only save at actual save points. Im not sure if there's any other issues but it's something I think you should be made aware of going in.

That all said it's a game I can't recommend enough
>>
>>3156259
5 euros is a real bargain. I was happy to get mine for 20.

It's so different from the other games in the series.

But if you're looking for a RPG that strays from the classic formula, you like turn-based battles with action points, and want to be immersed in a claustrophobic setting, this is your game.
>>
>>3156259
It's absolutely NOT a good game.
But it has a couple of good things in it. 5 euros is a fair price and despite what I just said it's still worth playing once.
The game's weakest point is its length and what ties into that. It uses a system that forces you to keep replaying to "unlock" cutscenes... that really have no reason to be hidden behind that system, since taking them out makes the entire experience very stale and doesn't really motivate a replay to find out more.
The game also motivates a sort of "cheat-grinding" in order to be able to fight speedbump bosses. It's not immediatly obvious that you can do that cheat-grinding, so it can also be frustrating in that way.

Just use a guide.
>>
What I hated about BoF5 (yes 5, not this "dragon quarter" bullshit, it was called straight-up 5 in Japan) is it used a Resident Evil style typewriter ribbon save system so you had very limited saves. BUT there was thankfully an easy way to circumvent that and have unlimited saves. Look into how to do that, I forget now, but it's practically necessary.
>>
>>3156981
At any point in the game you can "give up" and reload your save losing all the progress you made.
While keeping equipped items, items in the Locker systems, abilities and finally "Party XP" (extra experience points that you get in battle and can freely distribute among your characters).
Doing this replaces your current active inventory with a basic set of items. 5 basic healing items, 1 revive item... and 1 save token.

Which is why you should avoid saving willy-nilly with your last save token, instead using the quick-save option. Unless you're playing the EU version, since they took out the quick-save. But instead they gave you 9 tokens from the get go, which respawn entirely whenever you do the "Give up trick".

The most basic mechanic to learn in the game is to find a good loop of enemies, save right before fighting them, kill 'em all, give up and reload, kill 'em again. And so on until you accumulate a decent number of Party XP. Though Give Up doesn't keep your level, so once you spend all your Party XP you need to make sure you save to keep your level.

Welcome to BoF5.

>>
>>3152030
I had this same interest and decided to play them in order. I played 1, and while it was enjoyable at the start and towards the end, I had to force me through a very tedious, slow, old school, big middle section. You have random battle repels available through all the game so it still more bearable than, say, FF1, but doesn't feel much richer than that one despite being a generation apart.

Then I tried BoF2, and couldnt bare it. It's prettier, but with shitter characters and settings. Most people defending it are furrys who fap to the catgirl anyway.

So I suggest go for 4 and 3. 1 and 2 will kill your interest in the series before you get to the best of it
>>

I've only ever played 4 but I enjoyed that one immensely so I definitely recommend it.

But that's exactly what happened. If you're really a Kattfag you'd know that considering Nina from the first game herself tells that to the current Nina in BoFII.

It's plausible that the black wings are even a result of the mixing with the dragon clan.

... but the first one is the best! I'm sorry you have shit taste. I loved how you had to remember areas you couldn't access and backtrack when you gained new characters/abilities. No other game I've played has done that as well to this day. It seemed like the second one tried to appeal to a much younger audience, and for some reason, the third one, while nicer graphically, feels even more dated than the first two. I rented the fourth one in its day, maybe 15 years ago (?) - I remember it being decent.

They're all good games that deserve a playthrough, don't be an asshat. The first one has a very nice and dare I say it, comfy vibe but I can understand someone not liking it. I agree with you on the backtracking. I like all the games but BoF1 is definitely the most fun for me to replay.

>the second one tried to appeal to a much younger audience
Huh? It's much darker in its theme, however "edgy" people would say it is now, and even the gameplay is more complicated. It definitely upped the "cool" factor but I don't equate that with targeting a younger audience. I hope you aren't thinking that backtracking is some hardcore old school mechanic and BoF2 is more causal because it doesn't require as much. It's certainly more tedious when you consider the encounter rate, as well.

>the third one, while nicer graphically, feels even more dated than the first two.

Peco is a blank slate with very balanced stat growth. He is exactly what you choose to make him, and therefore has the most potential in the game.

Also, he has the highest innate reprisal rate, which is a double edged sword. While it makes him a beast with the counter-attacks, it also leads to unpredictable outcomes when you may be attempting to steal items or abilities. I personally find it annoying as shit and therefore do not use him. At all.

But he is a cute, little fucker.

I would say fuck Yuna, but eww.

In the manga he's kinda hot, but that just makes his villainy that much worse.

>>3159059
I usually have her with both at some point. Culverin + Shadowwalk = dead armies of enemies. The Repeater's her best +1 hit weapon, and Scias using Shining Blade with either the Slicer or the Render, Ursula using Shadowwalk with the repeater, and a buffed Ryu using Shadowwalk with either the Slicer or the Royal Sword while in Knight form can and will kill just about anything that isn't a boss, the Rider, or the Trunked/Treans (and even then, you might kill the Trunked anyway).

>>3160782
Yeah, you could swap weapons. Also armor and accessories, I think.

>>3176503
Guys like him and Yoshitaka Amano are pretty much gods of character design. And oh my fucking fuck, the dragons in IV. My favorites are a tie between Ch'o Ryong and Ni Ryong.

Peco is great but his stat growth is hardly balanced. Without a Master he has incredibly low Agility and Intelligence, okay Defense and pretty good Power. However, the onion's main draw is his HP. And since you get him at level 1 and are never required to use him, you can level him under any master you want whenever you want.

Patricians choose Fahl though. Peco has an innate regeneration that is based off of his HP. Under Fahl you can get Peco to 999HP well before capping his level and have a regeneration, defense and attack high enough to rofltank any encounter in the game solo.
>>
So I bought BoF III yesterday and was wondering should I just rush form plot point to plot point or grind a bit between?

Also I'm at the Plant after tower of robots and still don't have a master.

Yes, now I gotta go and save some dude from a fairy curse and help a girl that is locked.
>>

>and still don't have a master.
Why? You need to gain levels with masters to learn their skills, you learn great stuff with them.

Ryu can and will steamroll almost every boss all by himself, yeah, but making other characters useful is nice too.

IV Ryu gets even better if you consider how he is in the manga. I legit cried at the scene when the Kaiser first shows up.

Man, fuck Rasso. Ryu even calls him a faggot (or at least he does in essence, translating it to English would have been a problem because English doesn't quite have the context needed, and so they basically translated it to 'girly man').

Been playing IV a bit recently, and I forgot just how much bullshit you have to go through to get all of your dragons evolved. I did most of the sandflier stuff, but I just focus on getting points through tricks on the jumps instead of getting through it really fast, which can net me a guaranteed 4000 points for each course, but even then, that's only enough to evolve two dragons.

Anyone else have a better way to get the remaining game points that don't involve chasing pigsheep?

For me, and most fans, Breath of Fire 3 is the crowning jewel of the series. So if you only play one game, go with Breath of Fire 3.

Breath of Fire 4 is also very good. And so is Breath of Fire 2 if you can handle the old-school difficulty.
>>
>>3204563
>REference
How about the fact "Ryu" was renamed "Ken" by the person playing?
>>
>>3204541
Right, especially on IV there. Oh my God, some of the shit that befalls pretty much everyone is crazy. A village of children who are tortured to death, a princess forced into immortality for infinite ammo on a black magic nuke, a god being nailed in the head with one of said nukes powered by his girlfriend's soul, and worst of all, Yuna doesn't die.

>>3204628
I'd do IV>I>II>III, if you wanna do 'em in what's likely their chronological order. You can play them in pretty much whatever order you want though, since the storylines are pretty loosely related, although I think that I and II are a little closer than the others.

I started with 2, then randomly went to 4, probably because it actually had a PC version. Played 1 a bit back in the day but it didn't seem to be doing anything interesting. Should get around to playing 3 one of these days. I have an unopened copy of DQ sitting around somewhere.

Series needed more catgirls tbqh.

What's your thought process for believing 4 comes before 1, chronologically?
>>
>>3205132
Spoilers ahead, for those who haven't played the series much.

There are a few things involved, such as Ryu and Fou-lu having a blatant yin-yang dynamic between them. When the two of them become one again, they're still well aware that they were once two separate beings, and in the manga, they don't even stay together (having been separate for too long keeps them from fusing back together permanently, as their own senses of individuality keep them from melding into one mind). While the two of them are also mortal by the end of it all, that doesn't necessarily mean they're sterile. Interracial breeding is a thing (Cray's mother is human, while his father was Woren), and so the two of them would have likely sired the Light and Dark Dragon clans that become prevalent in later games. if we go with Ryu and Fou-lu staying together, he'd still have both halves of him available to spread.

Next is the matter of Myria. Yuna survived the whole ordeal and stated quite plainly that he aims to do it all over again. At some point, he probably came up with another plan, and to carry it out he needed the power of someone who either is or was at some point Endless, and he chose to contact Deis for this, seeing as her desire for a body would be excellent leverage. Eventually he does craft her a body, making her into the lamia girl we see in the other games. After getting her a body and taking what he needed from her to continue, he uses Elina's corpse (she may be dead, but the flesh is still there for him to work with) and, with the knowledge he's gained from working with Elina and Deis before, he makes his magnum opus, Myria. That the two of them are 'goddesses' and the creations of Yuna would explain why Deis refers to Myria as her sister in III.

Continued >
>>
>>3205205
While she may not be as powerful as the dragons, Myria is still nearly unequaled at this point. She kills Yuna in outrage, and then with him out of the way, she takes the world into her own hands and shapes it as she desires, separating the water and earth from the Sea of Mud into the land and oceans that are in the other games. The power she waves around as she does so ends up knocking mortals from the steps of the technology ladder they were on at the time to the medieval level they're at come the first game.

I suppose it all sounds like shoddy fanfiction at this point, but if I'm remembering right, the devs at Capcom have said that the first four games take place on the same timeline, they just didn't specify what order, so this is mostly just me trying to come up with a way to put them all together.

BoF 1 and 2 are both great.

3 was painful to play because of how long battles took.

4 was alright I guess.

BoF3 has some seriously hype moments. People say the music isn't as good as in 4, but for some reason more of it stuck with me. My first Zombie Dragon fight was so desperate, Garr died, had to solo with Ryu (equipped the new sword from the mine, whose element ZD resists. Wind? And I had a fkn fire sword). I hadn't heard the adult transformation scream before that, and so here I was transforming, getting shitkicked, heal, restore to, transform, get rekt, human Ryu rekt... and then eventually I won

Transforming to refill your health is the most hype thing ever. BoF4 transformations just aren't as ballsy.

2 is the single best game in the series closely followed by 5. Katt's and Nina's amounts of fanart can't say wrong. There isn't no argument to be had, it is just pixiv.
