Gothic atmosphere, eldritch abomination bosses, combat has an emphasis on rolling and finding the right time to attack, notable for it's difficulty. It's hub world reminds me of the Nexus, too.

Severance: Blade of Darkness is literally "Better Dark Souls". Combat is much more fair and strategic, much more interactivity with environment etc. You can even decapitate your own self if you perform an especially silly series of moves.
Oh and you can chop off enmeie's arm in which he holds a weapon, then beat him with said arm (that still holds a weapon)

Performed like ass on the machines on that time and could visually look like a game from 2004 - every water pool had realtime reflections, and everything (even arrows flying by) got volumetric shadows. And the whole thing is written on python.
Did I mention you can catch arrows shot at you out of thin air if you are agile enough? If you are not, then catch them with your shield - that's a viable tactic as well - pluck them out later and send them back. If you dont have a shield, you'll have to pluck them out of your own body though.

You can get a PC version from an abandonware website. You might think it's not running right when you see the fire, but it ran fast on the N64 as well. PSX version has no lock-on and is the worst version.

Beat me to it by minutes. I second this. Nightmare Creatures is fucking great. I recommend PS1 though because the N64 has no cutscenes and the controls on PC make it easy to get stuck in a corner it you aren't careful. The no lock on is bullshit though.
