I've been receiving random old video game related things from family members for some time now, and I've got 6 Playstations that have been lying around forever, what do I do with these? I don't really wanna just clean/sell them.

The reason people gave a shit was because the PS1's at the time were a cheap and good quality alternative to other stuff.

200 dollars new for an early PS1 vs a 500+ dollar dedicated player (that wasn't hot garbage) in the mid 90's. The generic ports on the back are nice though, and the parallel port can be used some useful stuff.

I've already gotten my younger family members hooked as they can get, I actually played Combat on my Coleco Gemini with my youngest cousin a few years back and he ended up fawning over all the old consoles I'd always have set up. The audio difference between early PS1s and late PS1s is that earlier ones use the KVM AK4309AVM dac and the later ones use the KVM AK4309BVM.

'Audiophile quality' was misinterpreted at the time. It didn't mean ps1 audio output was some kind of gold standard. It meant that the equipment was value for money. At that point in history you wouldn't have expected that level of performance for that price. Time and technology have moved on and those ps1s only have average sound quality. I haven't performed any scientific testing but I doubt they output anything better than the most basic equivalents today.
