Okay, I've been tired of all the bullshit threads fighting over this damn series

>Hurr rondo is better than X

>Hurr no SCIV is best

>Yur both wrong SOTN is da best

How about instead of the same old bullshit we just talk civilly about the games and why we like them? No fighting no bitching just discuss the games, the story why you like them, ect. Maybe even share music.

Remember opinions are opinions and they cannot be proven right or wrong so stop figthing over something you can't fucking change or beat.

Remember you CAN report people for trying to instigate flame wars and shit, if anyone tries to start shit just report them. A few mean posts is fine, but if the entire thread starts spiraling into it THEN you start reporting. Don't be a baby.

Now let's see if we can actually have some fucking civil discussion.

Forgot to add the the OP, what was your first castlevania? Just as a conversation starter.

I loved Simon's Quest. The open adventure atmosphere was amazing for me as a kid. The whole thing just had a very spooky, mysterious feeling.

This was before the internet when you could look things up and realize that the villagers were just being lying assholes.
>>
>>3124978
I honestly like Redaction alot just because it fixes alot of the crappy translation.

Although I wish the "Hints" were just slightly more cryptic, obviously not on par with the original game good god but maybe something like.

>"It's been said the white crystal can reveal the lies our eyes tell us."

Or something akin to just blatantly saying

>"The white crystal can be used to reveal false shit."

It is just a little weird that villagers know about "Clues" for no particular reason.

But all in all it's a big improvement. Especially the speedy as fuck day to night transition compared to the original game.

I always had this head cannon that Richter on SOTN wasn't fully possessed, more like Shaft messed with his head. The whole talk of wanting to keep his role for eternity strike me this sense of a true worry on a hunters mind, like a completion anxiety.

Sure he wouldn't go to these extremes, but as I said, Shaft could easily pull a few strings on it.

At the end of the day is just a flavor/lore I like to imagine ever since I played it for the first time when I was a kid, anyone else thought this? Or had any other head cannon for other games of the series?

Metroidvania is the stupidest term. There is no "vania" in Metroidvania. Castlevania games became Metroid-like. Experience/level systems are from RPGs. SotN brought nothing new to the table, and wasn't even that great of a game.

As someone who has unconditionally loved the series since it's debut, setting everyone get their panties up in a bunch was always frustrating. Hopefully this thread is better than most of the other ones. Lets start some more questions.

>First Game
First game was Super Castlevania 4, but I was able to go back and play the other ones since my parents had them when I was young.

>Favorite "Metroidvania" and "Classicvania"
My favorite game of the series is still Symphony of the Night, and I still play it on an almost weekly basis to calm down after a stressful day. I've gotten to the point where I'm pretty on point for most of the tricks. Favorite old style game is actually Castlevania III or X68000.

>Favorite Character and Favorite Belmont/Non-Belmont Character
My favorite character is Alucard, just because I fell in love with his animations in SotN and just that game in general. Favorite Belmont is Julius.

>Favorite Music from the Series
Favorite track is the following:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHpMdgM0Sb4

>Iga's New Game

I'm REALLY looking forward to Bloodstained, Iga hasn't really failed me yet. Most of "his" fuck up was due to meddling from Konami, so I have faith in the guy.

>>3132897
The best thing to come out of that part of the series sadly. It wasn't that good though. I still thought the Lords series was okay, but, it was a huge let down from what I was expecting.

I always wondered, why of all weapons to fight supernatural beings with do you choose a whip?

The chain/flaillike version made sense because it could be a silver chain whip or something but just a mere leather whip doesn't really make much sense for slaying dracula.
>>
>>3137553

Because it's the vampire killer, the only weapon able to bae dracula's dark powers.

I figure the developers of the first CV wanted to implement something that wasn't as cliche as a sword, and worked as a satisfactory attack mechanic.
>>
>>3137553
because it's imbued with leon's lover's soul or some shit which is apparently what gives it, it's powers.

I think the controls in Castlevania 1 were like that mostly because the game came out in 1986. Super Mario Bros. only came out in 1985, so platformers were a new thing and people were experimenting with different jump controls, how to combine platforming gameplay with various types of attacks, see what works with this new genre... That's why you had the weird jump controls in Ghosts 'N Goblins which also came out in 1985 in arcades, and while they were fine and made the series unique, I'm glad they added a double jump in SGnG. Just like I'm also glad they added the raccoon tail, the cape and permanent checkpoints in later Mario games even if it probably made the series easier.

SCIV wouldn't be as great as it was without all the new features they added, and the game was still reasonably difficult. I'm fine with both approaches which is why I also enjoyed the earlier games and some of the later games which didn't have as many directional attacks and as much jumping maneuverability.

You say SCIV "changed up and ruined the formula" despite the fact that every new game in the series on NES did that to an extent. Simon's Quest was a weird action-RPG hybrid with barely any platforming challenge, Castlevania 3 had multiple characters, including some with ranged attacks. It didn't ruin the formula either since the games that came out after never had this amount of fluidity; Bloodlines, and Dracula X/RoB went back to a more restricted control scheme. As much as Simon's Quest gets a fair reputation for being hard, I would say I would give it the title for the most casual ClassicVania. Once you know what you're supposed to do, the execution is completely trivial, the enemies are all dumb and never carefully placed as they are in a straight-up platformer like CS 1 and 3, you don't really need good reflexes, and the bosses are a joke.

>I think the controls in Castlevania 1 were like that mostly because the game came out in 1986

No that's completely wrong.
Free air movement is actually easier to program. It was a design choice by the devs to limit the player's movement in order to balance the game.

Just take a look at Castlevania III, here you have a new character "Grant" with a shitload of movement options, including free air control. Yet Trevor's movement is still very limited.
It's painfully obvious that the original devs actually wanted you to not have free movement.
>>
>>3139237
Or you know.
Maybe the made the characters different SO THEY WOULD BE DIFFERENT AND DIDN'T PLAY THE SAME WAY GIVING YOU REASON TO ACTUALLY USE OTHER CHARACTERS

But nah it's evidence for your pure formula conspiracy theory

Did you even fucking read what I wrote?

Yeah I did dumbass now read what I wrote.

CAREFULLY
>>
>>3139351
You're a complete retard, missing the entire point of this discussion and thinking that WRITING LIKE THIS makes you right about anything.

If you actually read then you'd have realised that I was talking about how the game actually features the "free movement" you or the other guy were talking about.
This proves that they were completely capable or giving Trevor free air control in CVIII, yet they decided not to because it'd make the game too easy.
>>
>>3139351
Obviously not if you think the age of Castlevania has anything to do with the lack of air control. It is *more* difficult to program Castlevania style jumping. Air control is the default, it's what you get when you don't bother changing the horizontal movement depending on ground contact. Donkey Kong, the earliest unambiguous platform game, has air control!
>>
>>3139368
Exactly dumbass but the point is it has nothing to do with your little conspiracy theory.

It's literally so the characters have DIFFERENT ABILITIES so you have a reason to play as them. If trevor had grant's free movement what the fuck would be the point to ever use him again if trevor could literally do the exact same thing?

Yes it was a choice but it makes flimsy evidence to your arguement with this mindset.

>>3139553
The fact the Classicvanias still maintained a degree of rigidity in many subsequent games suggests that it was a conscious design choice, even if they stumbled upon the idea serendipitously (which happens with all kinds of design).

Not even the poster you replied to, but your kind is the type of people that taints the Castlevania threads with stupidity.

Nobody cares how "hardcore" you are at a single-player platformer/action game idiot, you're not gonna get paid for it.
Castlevania games are mostly consistently good, and none if them is an impossibly hard game. People talk shit about SOTN and IV for being easy when the most loved classicvania in hipster circles is Rondo.
Not even X68K is that hard, they're all manageable games, the hardest ones might be CV1 (if you don't know how to deal with death and use the holy water) and CV3, all the other Castlevanias are manageable for any kind of player, which is why they're all mostly popular. The only thing that makes people like australia shit on IV is brand-loyalty and anti-nintendism, fuck that shit, I like Castlevania, not console wars.

The day fuckers like you give up trying to roleplay a "hardcore gamer" persona on anonymous online forums and shitpost about, it's the day we'll have decent Castlevania discussion.

>>
>>3139573
>The fact the Classicvanias still maintained a degree of rigidity in many subsequent games suggests that it was a conscious design choice

That's... No, that's not how this works, son. There's one thing called "tradition" and it's exactly why Richter can only whip forward while Simon could whip in 8 directions. Super Castlevania IV was trying to be novel, while Rondo of Blood was trying to be traditional.

The first anon said that the controls were rigid due to limitations. You can't offer a game made AFTER it to prove that this was no limitation issue, because games AFTER it were made in a time where the programmers knew more.

I agree with you: Castlevania's original mechanics are actually harder to program and seem to be intentional.

But your use of piss-poor arguments is not helping.
>>
>>3143510

The real reason why Simon can whip in 8 directions on CV IV is because the main programmer specifically likes to make games where you can do that, Mitsuru Yaida also worked on games like Gunstar Heroes and Bangai-O.
Rondo has its own changes to the original formula, like having a backflip, item crash and being able to walk (and drop out of) staris. Bloodlines has diagonal whipping, etc.

Still I think even with their own additions/changes to the formula, all these games are traditional. The changes started with SOTN and the other IGA games.
>>
>>3143510
Why would it even be a limitation issue? The NES is more than capable of handling smooth controls, as seen in Super Mario Bros.
>>
>>3143527
>Mitsuru Yaida also worked on games like Gunstar Heroes and Bangai-O.

Fucking Treasure, always having to ruin great games like Castlevania and Gradius. I'm glad they're dead so they won't be adding their own "unique" flavour to any other games.

It seems more to me that you just want to hate Treasure (all of it, even the pre-Treasures work), rather than you actually hating the games.
What you hate is probably Treasure fans, and actually, it's probably deeper than that, you just probably have some inner issues, and project them onto video game discussion online to vent off.
By declaring that games like Castlevania IV or Gunstar Heroes don't have "actual good gameplay" you're just trying to bait people with unpopular, contrarian opinions. Just stop.
I don't think you actually believe what you say, but in case you do, then try to actually come up with good arguments instead of insults and provocative behaviors. Maybe in that case we can have a good argument going on.

Let me show you a picture of the same enemy in the Japanese manual and explain to you why you're being stupid.

There is only one localization of the Japanese manual, and it's the one that I posted before. No one else has localized it because a localization already EXISTS.

Not only that, you CAN'T literally translate kanji. When Japanese games try to convey an English name, they'll use either hiragana or katakana, because those letters represent certain sounds. The name in pic related, however, is written in kanji, which conveys ideas. For instance, the first letter roughly translates to "half," while the third roughly translates to "people." I can't figure out the second, but I'm pretty sure it won't help any further in distinguishing the proper name. Translating kanji can only be done through context, of which there is none in this instance, besides the image of the head. So naturally, it's up to the localizers to decide whether to use the term "Medusa head" or "Gorgon head," and they went with Medusa because that name is more immediately recognizable.

But then, I don't actually know how to read Japanese, and I doubt most people here do. If someone actually does and can prove me wrong, go right ahead. But if you're this insistent on being right, you'll probably just assume anyone who thinks it's Medusa and not Gorgon is wrong for... no reason, basically. So have fun being a stubborn mule your whole life.

Actually the caption you are referring to translates to half fish man (the kanji is gyo which is spelled phonetically above it in hiragana) so is probably referring to the merman bellow. The bottom caption literally spells Medusa Boss in katakana so it is probably referring to the boss and not the medusa heads even though it shows a picture of the head. Not arguing about what they're called just pointing out that your speculative reasoning is wrong.

Well shit. Glad you pointed that out. I wasted a shitload of time trying to figure out the kanji for the wrong enemy.

Is it odd that I love Castlevania games and more or less enjoyed all of them? Sure I have my favorites but as a series I found most of them pretty much at least playable. I just don't get all the division in this fanbase.

It's people that don't do enough fucking drugs.
They're always ruining good times.

>I can't even, are you like insane? Are you on pills?
>
>I literally cannot grasp this way of thinking.

This sums up how I feel on a lot of current posters on /vr/.. I know its bait and shitposting but still.. it baffles me. Its weird how mentally ill people post here so much
>>
>>3150415
Fuck off until you pick one Castlevania to worship and hate all the other games.
>>
So, Haunted Castle. It's pretty damn hard. Can anyone that's made it past the flying stones in the first stage share some advice?

This will never not be funny

I kinda wish you'd play Super Kill Yourself Bros.

Because that meme is not and never will be taken seriously ever.
>>
>he doesn't play the jap version of cv3
your'e literally playing a shitty port otherwise

I honestly think australia has like legit mental problems or something.
I've never seen anyone this fucking devoted to shitposting besides barneyfag like seriously did SCIV kill his family or something? Why the fuck does he care so much and the fact that he literally keeps posting the same bullshit and 90% everyone tells him to fuck off why bother? he has to be legit insane to be expecting different results.

All i'm saying is the guy needs help because this is clearly unhealthy.

Why did they think making 90% of the level design only reachable by grabbing ledges was a good idea?

YEEEEESSSS
I beat the fucking Grim Reaper with the boomerang cross, not even a triple shot

I've only played Legacy of darkness, and honestly it wasn't THAT bad.

But I can concur since LOD had that shit too. albeit it wasn't ALL the time but I still think they should have had some actual playforming and not lara croft shit.

This is Castlevania not Tomb Raider
Castle Raider.

Not saying tomb raider s bad either but come on.

Anybody play circle of the moon for GBA?
>>
>>3153098
I did.

Felt a little too heavy and attacking with the whip is a bit sluggish.
>>
>>3153098
Funny how the best IGAvania wasn't worked on by IGA himself.
>>
>>3153098
You mean Castlevania? I'm playing it right now.
>>
>>3153098
Good game. Controls are a bit whack but once you get the hang of them it's truly a fantastic game.

Believe it or not but it's actually one of the smallest castles in the series.
>>
Any reason at all to play x68000 Castlevania before I get into Bloodlines?
>>
>>3157798
Chronicles I mean, whoops
>>
>>3157798
Not really. You might get used to the free air control but that's about it.
>>
>>3157798

Chronicles is x68000 (play original mode, not arranged).
And... yeah play both, doesn't matter which one you pay first.
>>
>>3157798
Yes you retard, it's one of the best Castlevania games.

If you played CV1 on NES, then no since it's just an inferior remake of it.
>>
What of Akumajō Densetsu and CV3? Besides the superior music on the former, are there any significant changes? Any known romhacks for 3 that add the Famicom music? All I found was this hysterical thread

Is there any reason I shouldn't just set my "players"/lives to 5 in Bloodlines besides the brand of being casual

Still a more faithful remake of CV1 than Super Castlevania Bros.
>>

Fuck off Australia, go play your awful Amiga "port" of CV1.

Grant is actually really useful in the japanese version.
The other difference is that in the US ver, the dmg dealt by enemies increases with every level so it's pretty bullshit.

The famicom Japanese version is the one you should always play to be quite desu.
