Why did they go with mode 7 + scaled sprites when they could have made it true to the original using the FX chip?

Would a stock SNES w/o super FX run Spectre? The original ran smoothly even on a low end 386 IIRC.

A low end 386 has much more raw compute power than an SNES.

The game seems to run smoothly on the SNES as it is and doesn't look too bad.

I don't really see a need to use the SuperFX chip for this game, and the framerate would likely be somewhat poor if it were using the first iteration of the chip.
